Kyrieleis’ vasculitis in acute retinal necrosis
2010
We report the first case in the literature of Kyrieleis' vasculitis related to acute retinal necrosis by Varicella zoster virus in a 76-year-old woman with bilateral involvement. In our patient the arterial lesions appeared 15 days after the initial presentation.
Multicolor fate mapping of Langerhans cell homeostasis
2013
The adult epidermal Langerhans cell network is formed by adjacent proliferative units composed of dividing cells and their terminally differentiated daughter cells.
A PCR-Based Assay for the Detection of Langerhans-Cell Chimerism after Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation.
2006
Abstract Early acute GVHD of the skin frequently occurs in patients after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Although T cell depletion reduces the incidence and severity, it does not completely prevent skin GVHD. This leads to a prolonged need for immunosuppressive medication in a significant number of patients. For the induction of acute GVHD, the stimulation of donor T cells by residing host antigen presenting cells such as Langerhans cells of the skin (LCs) plays a central role. The absence of donor T cells after depletion, however, seems to hamper an early switch of LCs from host to donor origin. Therefore, the monitoring of LC chimerism is of great interest. We and oth…
Langerinneg conventional dendritic cells produce IL-23 to drive psoriatic plaque formation in mice.
2013
Psoriasis is an autoinflammatory skin disease of unknown etiology. Topical application of Aldara cream containing the Toll-like receptor (TLR)7 agonist Imiquimod (IMQ) onto patients induces flares of psoriasis. Likewise, in mice IMQ triggers pathological changes closely resembling psoriatic plaque formation. Key cytokines like IL-23 and type-I IFN (IFN-I), both being produced mainly by dendritic cells (DCs), have been implicated in psoriasis. Although plasmacytoid DCs (pDCs) are the main source of IFNα and thought to initiate disease, conventional DCs (cDCs) appear to maintain the psoriatic lesions. Any role of cDCs during lesion formation remains elusive. Here, we report that selective ac…
Langerhans cells are negative regulators of the anti-Leishmania response
2011
Langerhans cells suppress the immune response to low-dose Leishmania major infection in part by inducing regulatory T cells.
980nm laser for difficult-to-treat basal cell carcinoma
2013
Abstract Begin basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is most common skin cancer over the world. There are around 20 modalities for BCC treatment. Laser surgery is uncommon option. We demonstrate our long term follow up results. Aim:To evaluate long term efficacy of a 980nm diode laser for the difficult-to-treat basal cell carcinoma. Materials and Methods: 167 patients with 173 basal cell carcinoma on the nose were treated with a 980 nm diode laser from May 1999 till May 2005 at Latvian Oncology center. All tumors were morphologically confirmed. 156 patients were followed for more than 5 years. Results: The lowest recurrence rate was observed in cases of superficial BCC, diameter<6mm; bet the highes…
Evaluation of Permeate Quality in Pilot Scale Membrane Distillation Systems
2019
In this work, the salinity of permeate obtained with membrane distillation (MD) in pilot scale systems was analyzed. Experiments were performed with three different spiral-wound commercial modules, one from Solar Spring with 10 m2 surface membrane area and two from Aquastill with 7.2 and 24 m2. Intermittent operation meant that high permeate conductivity was measured in the beginning of each experiment, which was gradually decreasing until reaching a constant value (3&ndash
Quantitative mass spectrometry for human melanocortin peptides in vitro and in vivo suggests prominent roles for b-MSH and desacetyl a-MSH in energy …
2018
Objective: The lack of pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC)-derived melanocortin peptides results in hypoadrenalism and severe obesity in both humans and rodents that is treatable with synthetic melanocortins. However, there are significant differences in POMC processing between humans and rodents, and little is known about the relative physiological importance of POMC products in the human brain. The aim of this study was to determine which POMC-derived peptides are present in the human brain, to establish their relative concentrations, and to test if their production is dynamically regulated. Methods: We analysed both fresh post-mortem human hypothalamic tissue and hypothalamic neurons derived fro…
Nutritional supplementation with trans-10, cis-12-conjugated linoleic acid induces inflammation of white adipose tissue.
2006
Conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs) are conjugated dienoic isomers of linoleic acid. Many people supplement their diets with CLAs to attempt weight loss, and the trans-10,cis-12 isomer (t10,c12-CLA) of CLA reduces adiposity in animal models and humans. However, CLA treatment in mice causes insulin resistance that has been attributed to the lipoatrophic state, which is associated with hyperinsulinemia and hepatic steatosis. Here, we investigated the effect of t10,c12-CLA on adipose tissue inflammation, another factor promoting insulin resistance. We confirmed that t10,c12-CLA daily gavage performed in mice reduces white adipose tissue (WAT) mass and adiponectin and leptin serum levels and provo…
Heavy metal sorption in the lichen cationactive layer.
2007
Results of copper ion sorption in lichens owing to the ion exchange between the surroundings (aqueous solution) and the lichen cationactive layer have been presented. It indicates that the course of sorption of these ions, similarly as in the case of cations of other heavy metals, depends on the concentration and type of cations naturally found in lichen surroundings: H+, Na+, K+, Mg2+ and Ca2+. A determination method of heavy metal concentration in lichen surroundings has been proposed. It consists in exposure of transplanted lichens in the presence of salts that provide precisely determined, artificial salinity of precipitation with which the lichens are in contact. The studies were condu…
