The Development and Initial Validation of a Short, Self-Report Measure on Social Inclusion for People with Intellectual Disabilities-A Transnational …

2021

Sport has been promoted as a means of increasing the social inclusion of persons with intellectual disabilities. Suitable tools for evaluating this claim are not readily available. The aim of this study was to develop a self-report tool for use by people with intellectual disabilities regarding the social inclusion they experience in sport and in the community. A three-phase process was used. In the first phase an item bank of questionnaire items was created and field-tested with 111 participants. Initial factor analysis identified 42 items which were further evaluated in Phase 2 with 941 participants from six European countries. Construct validity was established first through Exploratory …

The experience of sexuality in adults with intellectual disability

2017

Do typically and atypically developing children learn and generalize novel names similarly: The role of conceptual distance during learning and at te…

2020

International audience; There is a large body of evidence showing that comparison of multiple stimuli leads to better conceptualization and generalization of novel names than no-comparison settings in typically developing (TD) children. By contrast, the evidence regarding this issue remains scarce in children with intellectual disabilities (ID). Children with intellectual disabilities (ID) and TD children matched on mental age with the Raven's coloured progressive matrices were tested in several novel name learning comparison conditions, with familiar objects. We manipulated the conceptual distance between the learning stimuli in the learning phase and between the learning and generalizatio…

Me, Myself and I - Supporting People with Intellectual Disabilities Towards Self-determination

2020

The transition into work is challenging for people with intellectual disabilities (ID) and there are few digital services that support this process. The transition involves several organizations and professionals that need to collaborate and coordinate their documentation and their initiatives. This prototype paper describes a self-reflective career tool designed to support young adults with ID towards self-determination and transitions into work. The users are supported through features such as mapping of interests, skills and abilities, goal setting and progress overview. The prototype of the self-reflective career tool has been evaluated formatively and is continuously redesigned and fur…

eHealth Approach for Motivating Physical Activities of People with Intellectual Disabilities

2020

Compared with the general population, people with intellectual disabilities have worse health, lower levels of activity, and greater barriers to participating in fitness activities. Regular physical activity has positive effects on cardiovascular and psychosocial health and thus it is important to identify effective interventions for people with intellectual disabilities in everyday settings. In this position paper we present the design and development of prototypes of game-based eHealth solutions for behaviour change and health promotion by influencing physical activity. Participatory design and agile development have been applied in this project to deliver a system based on three solution…
