Towards more relevance-oriented data mining research

2008

Data mining (DM) research has successfully developed advanced DM techniques and algorithms over the last few decades, and many organisations have great expectations to take more benefit of their data warehouses in decision making. Currently, the strong focus of most DM-researchers is still only on technology-oriented topics. Commonly the DM research has several stakeholders, the major of which can be divided into internal and external ones each having their own point of view, and which are at least partly conflicting. The most important internal groups of stakeholders are the DM research community and academics in other disciplines. The most important external stakeholder groups are manager…

An Artificial Intelligence–Based Blending of Satellite products across Mediterranean Island of Sicily, Italy using GPM-IMERG V06 Final Run

2022

Precipitation is the key input variable to hydrological models and its monitoring plays a significant role in water resources planning and improving flood and drought forecasting, also under climate change impacts. In recent years, many precipitation satellite products have been developed and released to the public; among these, the Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals from Global Precipitation Measurement (IMERG) is designed to address limitations and uncertainties related to traditional methods. The primary purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive assessment of precipitation estimates retrieved from the IMERG v6 Final Run over the Mediterranean island of Sicily (Italy) at dail…

SleepXAI: An explainable deep learning approach for multi-class sleep stage identification

2022

AbstractExtensive research has been conducted on the automatic classification of sleep stages utilizing deep neural networks and other neurophysiological markers. However, for sleep specialists to employ models as an assistive solution, it is necessary to comprehend how the models arrive at a particular outcome, necessitating the explainability of these models. This work proposes an explainable unified CNN-CRF approach (SleepXAI) for multi-class sleep stage classification designed explicitly for univariate time-series signals using modified gradient-weighted class activation mapping (Grad-CAM). The proposed approach significantly increases the overall accuracy of sleep stage classification …

Corrigendum to three papers that deal with “Anti”-Bayesian Pattern Recognition [Pattern Recognition]

2014

In the papers 1 (Thomas and Oommen, 2013), 2 (Oommen and Thomas, 2014) and 3 (Thomas and Oommen, 2013), and their associated conference versions cited in those papers, we had introduced a new method of so-called "Anti"-Bayesian Pattern Recognition (PR) which achieved the classification using only a few (sometimes as few as two) points distant from the mean. While the PR strategy, in and of itself, is accurate, the claim that it was based on the Order Statistics (OS) of the distributions of the features is not. The PR and classification results are rather founded on the symmetric quantiles and not on the symmetric OSs. This brief paper corrects the flawed claim presented in those papers. Hig…

A new approach to portfolio selection based on forecasting

2023

In this paper we analyze the portfolio selection problem from a novel perspective based on the analysis and prediction of the time series corresponding to the portfolio’s value. Namely, we define the value of a particular portfolio at the time of its acquisition. Using the time series of historical prices of the different financial assets, we calculate backward the value that said portfolio would have had in past time periods. A damped trend model is then used to analyze this time series and to predict the future values of the portfolio, providing estimates of the mean and variance for different forecasting horizons. These measures are used to formulate the portfolio selection problem, whic…

An associative link from geometric to symbolic representations in artificial vision

1991

Recent approaches to modelling the reference of internal symbolic representations of intelligent systems suggest to consider a computational level of a subsymbolic kind. In this paper the integration between symbolic and subsymbolic processing is approached in the framework of the research work currently carried on by the authors in the field of artificial vision. An associative mapping mechanism is defined in order to relate the constructs of the symbolic representation to a geometric model of the observed scene.

A Bacterial-Based Algorithm to Simulate Complex Adaptative Systems

2014

Paper presented at the 13th International Conference on Simulation of Adaptive Behavior which took place at Castellón, Spain in 2014, July 22-25. Bacteria have demonstrated an amazing capacity to overcome envi-ronmental changes by collective adaptation through genetic exchanges. Using a distributed communication system and sharing individual strategies, bacteria propagate mutations as innovations that allow them to survive in different envi-ronments. In this paper we present an agent-based model which is inspired by bacterial conjugation of DNA plasmids. In our approach, agents with bounded rationality interact in a common environment guided by local rules, leading to Complex Adaptive Syste…
