Introducing automated reasoning in network management
2004
This paper proposes the adoption of Artificial Intelligence techniques in the field of network management and moni toring. In order to allow automated reasoning on network ing topics, we constructed an accurate ontological model capable of fitting as more as possible networking concepts. The thoroughly representation of the domain knowledge is used by a Logical Reasoner, which is an expert system ca pable of performing management tasks typically executed by human experts. The Logical Reasoner is integrated in a distributed multi-agent architecture for network manage ment, which exploits the dynamic reasoning capabilities of the Situation Calculus formalism to provide a powerful sys tem capa…

A fog-based hybrid intelligent system for energy saving in smart buildings
2019
In recent years, the widespread diffusion of pervasive sensing devices and the increasing need for reducing energy consumption have encouraged research in the energy-aware management of smart environments. Following this direction, this paper proposes a hybrid intelligent system which exploits a fog-based architecture to achieve energy efficiency in smart buildings. Our proposal combines reactive intelligence, for quick adaptation to the ever-changing environment, and deliberative intelligence, for performing complex learning and optimization. Such hybrid nature allows our system to be adaptive, by reacting in real time to relevant events occurring in the environment and, at the same time, …
3D objects descriptors methods: Overview and trends
2017
International audience; Object recognition or object's category recognition under varying conditions is one of the most astonishing capabilities of human visual system. The scientists in computer vision have been trying for decades to reproduce this ability by implementing algorithms and providing computers with appropriate tools. Hence, several intelligent systems have been proposed. To act in this field, numerous approaches have been proposed. In this paper we present an overview of the current trend in 3D objects recognition and describe some representative state of the art methods, highlighting their limits and complexity.
Different sensory aspects of a food are not remembered with equal acuity
2009
International audience; In the present study, food memory for three sensory aspects involved in food perception, taste, texture and aroma, is compared. Participants received a lunch including a custard dessert (target) under incidental learning condition. One day later, participants were presented with samples identical to the target and with distractors varying either in sweetness, thickness or cherry aroma. Memory was assessed by an absolute recognition question (“Did you eat this sample yesterday?”) and by relative questions (“Is this sample less, equal or more sweet than the sample you ate yesterday?”). Results showed better memory performance for sweetness than for the two other sensor…
A Multiple Case Study of Artificial Intelligent System Development in Industry
2020
There is a rapidly increasing amount of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems developed in recent years, with much expectation on its capacity of innovation and business value generation. However, the promised value of AI systems in specific business contexts might not be understood, and further integrated into the development processes. We wanted to understand how software engineering processes and practices can be applied to develop AI systems in a fast-faced, business-driven manner. As the first step, we explored contextual factors of AI development and the connections between AI developments to business opportunities. We conducted 12 semi-structured interviews in seven companies in Brazi…
Web, Artificial Intelligence and Network Applications. Proceedings of the Workshops of the 34th International Conference on Advanced Information Netw…
2020
This proceedings book presents the latest research findings, and theoretical and practical perspectives on innovative methods and development techniques related to the emerging areas of Web computing, intelligent systems and Internet computing. The Web has become an important source of information, and techniques and methodologies that extract quality information are of paramount importance for many Web and Internet applications. Data mining and knowledge discovery play a key role in many of today’s major Web applications, such as e-commerce and computer security. Moreover, Web services provide a new platform for enabling service-oriented systems. The emergence of large-scale distributed co…
Hume’s Guillotine in Designing Ethically Intelligent Technologies
2020
Intelligent machines can follow ethical rules in their behaviour. However, it is less clear whether intelligent systems can also create new ethical principles. The former position can be called weak ethical AI and the latter strong ethical AI. Hume’s guillotine which claims that one cannot derive values from facts appears to be a fundamental obstacle to strong ethical AI. The analysis of human ethical information processes provides clarity to the possibility of strong ethical AI. Human ethical information processing begins with positive of negative emotions associated to situations. Situations can be seen as consequences of actions and for this reason people can define rules about acceptabi…
Thriving Rough Sets: 10th Anniversary - Honoring Professor Zdzisław Pawlak's Life and Legacy & 35 Years of Rough Sets
2017
This special book is dedicated to the memory of Professor Zdzisław Pawlak, the father of rough set theory, in order to commemorate both the 10th anniversary of his passing and 35 years of rough set theory. The book consists of 20 chapters distributed into four sections, which focus in turn on a historical review of Professor Zdzisław Pawlak and rough set theory; a review of the theory of rough sets; the state of the art of rough set theory; and major developments in rough set based data mining approaches. Apart from Professor Pawlak’s contributions to rough set theory, other areas he was interested in are also included. Moreover, recent theoretical studies and advances in applications are a…
