A fog-based hybrid intelligent system for energy saving in smart buildings
2019
In recent years, the widespread diffusion of pervasive sensing devices and the increasing need for reducing energy consumption have encouraged research in the energy-aware management of smart environments. Following this direction, this paper proposes a hybrid intelligent system which exploits a fog-based architecture to achieve energy efficiency in smart buildings. Our proposal combines reactive intelligence, for quick adaptation to the ever-changing environment, and deliberative intelligence, for performing complex learning and optimization. Such hybrid nature allows our system to be adaptive, by reacting in real time to relevant events occurring in the environment and, at the same time, …
Robust and Efficient Data Gathering for Wireless Sensor Networks
2006
This paper describes a new strategy for data gathering in wireless sensor networks that takes into account the need for both energy saving, typical of such networks, and for a reasonable tradeoff between robustness and efficiency. The proposed algorithm implements an efficient strategy for retransmission of lost packets by discovering alternative routes and making clever use of multiple paths when necessary; in order to do that we build upon the general framework presented in recent works, that provided a formulation of duplicate and order insensitive aggregation functions, and by taking advantage of some intrinsic characteristics of the wireless sensor networks, we exploit implicit acknowl…
XML-based Knowledge Discovery for Linguistic Atlas of Sicily (ALS) Project
2009
The identification of new useful patterns in data is a core process for intelligent systems. Information overflow is directly related to this problem. In this work we propose a knowledge discovery methodology to retrieve useful and novel information from raw data stored in a DBMS. We used ALSDB, a database that has been built suitably to access structured information obtained from the questionnaires produced in the Linguistic Atlas of Sicily (ALS) project. The ALS project is a decennal joint effort led by researchers at the Dipartimento di Scienze Filologiche e Linguistiche of the University of Palermo that has the purpose to track and study the geo-linguistic and lexicographic processes ab…
Development of intelligent service robots
2013
The creation of intelligent robots has been a major goal of Artificial Intelligence since the early days and has provided many motivations to Artificial Intelligence researchers. Therefore, a large body of research has been done in this field and many relevant results have shown that integration of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics techniques is a viable approach towards this goal. This article summarizes the efforts and the achievements of several Italian research groups in the development of intelligent robotic systems characterized by a suitable integration of Artificial Intelligence and Robotic techniques. The contributions collected in this article show the long history of this rese…
L'intelletto nella Risala mahiyyat al-'aql di al-Harith al-Muhasibi
2002
The epistle on the essence of the intellect places at the center of the research a philological analysis of the term intellect and its conceptual analysis based on the main sources of Islamic knowledge: the Koran and the sunna. The author is also interested in the ethical aspect of the intellect, the ability to distinguish between good and evil. Intelligence, understanding, intellectual light ultimately lead man to the contemplation of divine realities.
Performance Analysis of Cooperative V2V and V2I Communications Under Correlated Fading
2019
Cooperative vehicular networks will play a vital role in the coming years to implement various intelligent transportation-related applications. Both vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications will be needed to reliably disseminate information in a vehicular network. In this regard, a roadside unit (RSU) equipped with multiple antennas can improve the network capacity. While the traditional approaches assume antennas to experience independent fading, we consider a more practical uplink scenario where antennas at the RSU experience correlated fading. In particular, we evaluate the packet error probability for two renowned antenna correlation models, i.e., cons…
Learning Automata Based Q-learning for Content Placement in Cooperative Caching
2019
An optimization problem of content placement in cooperative caching is formulated, with the aim of maximizing sum mean opinion score (MOS) of mobile users. Firstly, a supervised feed-forward back-propagation connectionist model based neural network (SFBC-NN) is invoked for user mobility and content popularity prediction. More particularly, practical data collected from GPS-tracker app on smartphones is tackled to test the accuracy of mobility prediction. Then, a learning automata-based Q-learning (LAQL) algorithm for cooperative caching is proposed, in which learning automata (LA) is invoked for Q-learning to obtain an optimal action selection in a random and stationary environment. It is p…
Numerical approach for signal delay in general distributed networks
2003
The authors consider a general network with telegraph equations modelling distributed elements and having, additionally, nonlinear capacitors. A global asymptotic exponential stability of the solution is given. A simple computable upper bound of the delay time is given. Numerical examples illustrate the usefulness of the results. >
How Are Situation Picture, Situation Awareness, and Situation Understanding Discussed in Recent Scholarly Literature?
2019
There are several different definitions of situation awareness. However, all of them have in common is knowing and understanding of what is happening, an understanding of future changes or problems, and the prediction of the future situation and the decisions to be made on its basis. Situation picture and Situation Awareness are narrow. Situation understanding of the situation is the understanding of the decision-makers and their assistants about what has happened, the circumstances that have affected them, the goals of the different parties and the possible development options of the events needed to make decisions on a particular issue or subject. The results of this study indicate that t…
3D objects descriptors methods: Overview and trends
2017
International audience; Object recognition or object's category recognition under varying conditions is one of the most astonishing capabilities of human visual system. The scientists in computer vision have been trying for decades to reproduce this ability by implementing algorithms and providing computers with appropriate tools. Hence, several intelligent systems have been proposed. To act in this field, numerous approaches have been proposed. In this paper we present an overview of the current trend in 3D objects recognition and describe some representative state of the art methods, highlighting their limits and complexity.
