The objective of this prospective clinical study was to analyze the pain (intensity, location and type) that patients presented after the placement of different types of orthodontic appliances: conventional, low friction, lingual and aligners. The sample consisted of 120 patients divided into four groups: conventional (CON), low friction (LF), lingual (LO) and aligners (INV). Abstract The hydraulic architecture and water relations of two olive genotypes, ‘Leccino Dwarf’ (LD) and ‘Leccino Minerva’ (LM) growing at two irradiance levels i.e. full sunlight irradiance (HI) and 50% sunlight irradiance (LI) were studied. The two clones showed similar plant hydraulic conductances (Kplant) and similar conductance of roots and leaves (Kroot and Kleaf) when growing at equal irradiance levels. However, both Kplant and Kroot were significantly lower in LI plants than in HI ones. On the contrary, Kleaf was unaffected by the light regime. We compare theoretically the intensity of the ${\mathit{B}}_{1\mathit{g}}$ phonon Raman scattering in ${\mathrm{YBa}}_{2}$${\mathrm{Cu}}_{3}$${\mathrm{O}}_{7}$ above and below the superconducting transition temperature ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$. Our analysis shows that a considerable enhancement of the scattering intensity in the superconducting state that is observed experimentally can be caused by an extension of the number of intermediate electronic states near the Fermi surface that participate in the Raman process.
Ordered structures of DNA on Au(110)

Reflection Anisotropy Spectroscopy (RAS) is used to confirm that both single stranded (ss) and double stranded (ds) DNA formed ordered structures when adsorbed at Au(110)/phosphate buffer interface. The variation of the spectral intensity shows a cos 2θ dependence on the angle θ, which lies between the electric vector of the incident polarised light and the optical axes of the surface plane of the Au(110) establishing that the optical axes of both molecules are aligned with those of the Au(110) surface. Luminescence from nearly isolated surface defects in silica nanoparticles

A structured emission/excitation pattern, proper of isolated defects, arises in a vacuum from silica nanoparticles. The luminescence, centered around 3.0-3.5 eV, is characterised by a vibronic progression due to the phonon coupling with two localised modes of frequency ∼1370 cm(-1) and ∼360 cm(-1), and decays in about 300 ns at 10 K. On increasing the temperature, the intensity and the lifetime decrease due to the activation of a non-radiative rate from the excited state. Concurrently, the temperature dependence of the lineshape evidences the low coupling with non-localised modes of the matrix (Huang-Rhys factor S ~ 0.2) and the poor influence of the inhomogeneous broadening. International audience; Surface roughness is of great interest in agricultural spraying because it is used to characterise leaf surface wettability to predict the behaviour of droplets on a leaf surface. In recent years, the use of texture analysis to estimate surface roughness has emerged. In this paper we propose to estimate leaf surface roughness by using an optimisation of the Generalized Fourier Descriptors method. This approach is then compared with two other standard methods in the literature, one based on grey level intensity variation and the other on wavelet decomposition.
