Automatic correction of the effects of the light source on spherical objects. An application to the analysis of hyperspectral images of citrus fruits

2008

This study proposes a method for correcting the adverse effects produced by the curvature of spherical objects in acquiring images with a computer vision system. Its suitability has been illustrated in a specific case of citrus fruits. The images of this kind of fruit are darker in areas nearer the edge than in the centre, and this makes them more difficult to analyse. This methodology considers the fruit as being a Lambertian ellipsoidal surface and produces a 3D model of the fruit. By doing it becomes possible to calculate the part of the radiation that should really reach the camera and to make the intensity of the radiation uniform over the whole of the fruit surface captured by the cam…

Photoelastic Analysis of Partially Occluded Objects With an Integral-Imaging Polariscope

2014

Polariscopes are the basic instruments used for the analysis of the stress state of transparent materials. Polarized light passing through a 3D object carries the integrated effect of the stress field along the light path. Therefore, conventional polariscopes are not able to discern the stress state of objects involving multiple plates with mutual occlusions. In this paper we propose a novel experimental system for three-dimensional stress analysis based on the combination of a polariscope and Synthetic Aperture Integral Imaging technique. Experimental results show the system's ability to recover the information of the stress distribution of a set of plates located at different depths havin…

Altered processing of sensory stimuli in patients with migraine.

2014

Migraine is a cyclic disorder, in which functional and morphological brain changes fluctuate over time, culminating periodically in an attack. In the migrainous brain, temporal processing of external stimuli and sequential recruitment of neuronal networks are often dysfunctional. These changes reflect complex CNS dysfunction patterns. Assessment of multimodal evoked potentials and nociceptive reflex responses can reveal altered patterns of the brain's electrophysiological activity, thereby aiding our understanding of the pathophysiology of migraine. In this Review, we summarize the most important findings on temporal processing of evoked and reflex responses in migraine. Considering these d…

Determination and gustatory properties of taste-active compounds in tomato juice

2003

The water-soluble compounds of a tomato juice selected for its high taste intensity and quality, have been investigated by both physico-chemical and sensory analyses. The physico-chemical assessment of the crude juice led to the construction of a synthetic model juice. Although 97% of the material contained in the crude juice has been identified and quantified, significant sensory differences between the crude and model juice have been found concerning bitterness and sharpness, showing that the components responsible for these gustatory descriptors have not yet been identified in the juice. For the other descriptors: sweetness, saltiness, sourness, umami and astringency, no significant diff…

Equi-intensity across the SpectrumTM taste scales

2015

Abstract This work aimed to study the equi-intensity across the Spectrum™ taste scales. The approach consisted of a comparison of four reference points illustrating the same level of intensity across the scales using two very different methods: 2-alternative forced-choice (2-AFC) and Labeled Magnitude Scale (LMS). The comparisons across these scales were based on caffeine, citric acid, sodium chloride, sucrose, and monosodium glutamate in water solutions, at different concentrations, prepared according to the guidelines given for the Spectrum™ method. A scale concerning the umami taste, designed in the spirit of the Spectrum™ scales, was also studied in this work. Both procedures produced s…

Activity profile, PlayerLoad™ and heart rate response of Gaelic football players : A pilot study

2019

The objectives of this study were to; quantify positional differences in the activity profiles of Gaelic football players and to evaluate decrements in physical performance during a pre-season competition. Global positioning system (GPS) data was recorded from 36 players from 3 teams across 5 games. The relative distance covered in locomotor activities, peak speed, relative PlayerLoad™ (PL.min -1 )and heart rate responses were evaluated between playing positions and across match periods using a mixed model analysis. The mean relative distance of 92.4 ± 23.3 m.min -1 covered, comprised 28.4 ± 10.2 m.min -1 of high intensity running (m.min -1 ≥4.0 m.s -1 ) and 9.9 ± 3.9 m.min -1 of very high i…

On the Variability of the Temperature Coefficients of mc-Si Solar Cells with Irradiance

2016

Abstract The temperature sensitivity of silicon solar cells is in general assumed to be constant with irradiance in PV forecasting models, although it has been demonstrated experimentally that this is not true. In this study a theoretical model is established that describes the variation of the temperature coefficients of a silicon solar cell as a function of the irradiance. It is shown that the temperature sensitivity of the solar cell efficiency is decreasing with the irradiance and that the main reason for this behavior comes from the increase of the open-circuit voltage with light intensity. Moreover, a dependency of the cell's ideality factor on the irradiance has to be assumed to rece…

The evolution of technological inequalities: country effect vs industry composition

2013

PurposeUsing the EU‐KLEMS database for 12 countries and 16 industries, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the differences in technological capital intensity (R&D capital stock as a percentage of GVA) between industries and the evolution of inequalities between the EU‐11 and the USA, as well as between EU countries.Design/methodology/approachThe authors use shift‐share analysis and a Theil inequality index to break down these inequalities and to quantify the importance of either a country or a specialization effect.FindingsResults from the shift‐share analysis show that there was a technological gap in favor of the USA until the mid‐1990s linked to the greater accumulation of techno…
