Interannual memory effects for spring NDVI in semi-arid South Africa

[1] Almost 20 years of Normalized Difference Vegetative Index (NDVI) and precipitation (PPT) data are analysed to better understand the interannual memory effects on vegetation dynamics observed at regional scales in Southern Africa (SA). The study focuses on a semi-arid region (25°S–31°S; 21°E–26°E) during the austral early summer (September–December). This paper takes into account the characterisation of ephemeral stream hydrology from Mediterranean environments. The heavy floods that these countries suffer are due to firstly, the physical watershed features (steep slopes, scarced vegetation cover and thin soils) and, secondly, to the intense and variable rainfall. Large quantities of precipitation fall in a matter of hours, or even minutes, over very steep catchments, causing catastrophic flash-floods, with very pointed hydrographs and short time lags. This thesis is devoted to the spectroscopy of ethylene in the aim of studying the molecule trapped in zeolites. The first part deals with the tensorial model adapted to the symmetry of the isolated molecule: formalism, Hamiltonian and transition moments. To take the strong electric fields existing into zeolites into account, an extension of the model to the Stark effect is proposed in the second part. The third part describes the programs of the D2hTDS software which have been built for the calculation and analysis of X2Y4-type molecule spectra. Icewine was used as an experimental object, and hundreds of wine- or food-related odor mixtures were designed and investigated for the first time based on the identification and analysis of icewine’ odorants. The aim of the thesis work was to explore the key odor elements that affected the perception of odor mixtures and the general laws behind olfactory perceptual interactions.
