A measurement-based study on the correlations of inter-domain Internet application flows
2014
Internet traffic characterization has a profound impact on network engineering and traffic identification. Existing studies are often carried out on a per-flow basis, focusing on the properties of individual flows. In this paper, we study the interaction of Internet traffic flows and network features from a complex network perspective, focusing on six types of applications: P2P file sharing, P2P stream, HTTP, instant messaging, online games and abnormal traffic. With large-volume traffic flow records collected through proprietary line-speed hardware-based monitors, we construct flow graphs of these different application types. Based on the flow graphs, we calculate the correlation coefficie…
An efficient distributed algorithm for generating and updating multicast trees
2006
As group applications are becoming widespread, efficient network utilization becomes a growing concern. Multicast transmission represents a necessary lower network service for the wide diffusion of new multimedia network applications. Multicast transmission may use network resources more efficiently than multiple point-to-point messages; however, creating optimal multicast trees (Steiner Tree Problem in networks) is prohibitively expensive. This paper proposes a distributed algorithm for the heuristic solution of the Steiner Tree Problem, allowing the construction of effective distribution trees using a coordination protocol among the network nodes. Furthermore, we propose a novel distribut…
Multicast access control concept for xDSL-customers
2006
Multicast is a tempting possibility for many broad- band services. It makes possible to deliver one data-stream to several receivers simultaneously. IP-Multicast is based on an open group concept. This means that it is possible for all the users to join the group and thus receive the data. The open concept is also the main reason why multicast has not been taken in wider use. There is two different solution to solve this problem, group access control and multicast data encryption. Group access control mechanisms focuses on restricting the group membership at the users edge device. Traffic encryption scheme relies on end-to-end encryption, so a key management architecture is also needed. We …
Quality of Service Multicasting over Differentiated Services Networks
2003
This paper proposes a solution to support real-time multicast traffic with Quality of Service (QoS) constraints over Differentiated Services (DiffServ) IP networks. Our solution allows multicast users to dynamically join and leave the multicast tree. Moreover, it allows a multicast user which has negotiated a best-effort session to upgrade to a QoS-enabled session. Our solution is backward compatible with the Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) scheme. It combines two ideas. First, resource availability along a new QoS path is verified via a probe-based approach. Second, QoS is maintained by marking replicated packets with a special DSCP value, before forwarding them on the QoS path.
An efficient distributed approach for dynamic multicast trees
2005
In this paper we present a distributed algorithm for constructing efficient multicast trees in large networks. The algorithm allows the set up of effective distribution trees using a coordination protocol among the network nodes. The algorithm has been implemented and extensively tested both in simulation, and on experimental networks. Performance evaluation indicates that our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art distributed algorithms for multicast tree setup, providing good levels of convergence time and communication complexity. Furthermore, we introduce a distributed technique for dynamically updating the multicast tree. The approach monitors the accumulated damage as nodes join or…
The heterogeneity of inter-domain Internet application flows: entropic analysis and flow graph modelling
2013
The growing popularity of the Internet has triggered the proliferation of various applications, which possess diverse communication patterns and user behaviour. In this paper, the heterogeneous characteristics of Internet applications and traffic are investigated from a complex network and entropic perspective. On the basis of real-life flow data collected from a public network provided by an Internet service provider, flow graphs are constructed for five types of applications as follows: Web, P2P Download, P2P Stream, Video Stream and Instant Messaging. Three types of entropy measures are introduced to the flow graphs, and the heterogeneity of applications within a 24-h period is analysed …
Blockchain based Inter-domain Latency Aware Routing Proposal in Software Defined Network
2018
Border gateway protocol (BGP) version 4 is routing current Internet for more than 20 years. BGP is the only protocol that has proven its routing capability of such size network with continually growing nature. Although BGP is scalable and network layer reachability information it lacks quality of service metrics like latency. BGP routing decision algorithm uses as-path length between autonomous systems (AS) as main factor for most of its best-path calculations. Because of more affordable peering architectures as-path length is generally decreasing in worldwide internet network resulting in less efficient routes for real-time internet protocol traffic. This study proposes future internet arc…
Transferencia inter-dominios en resolución de problemas : una propuesta instruccional basada en el proceso de «traducción algebraica»
2009
Understanding a science and math word problem means constructing mental representations at different levels of abstraction. Secondary students have dificulties solving algebraic word problems due to the transition from the concrete representation to the mathematic representation. In order to facilitate the «algebraic translation» of the problems, we adapt a «rule to put a problem into equations» by Puig (1998) and insert it in an experimental methodology devoted to improving the inter-domain transfer in science. Results show the power of the instructional methodology to overcome most of the students’ dificulties, no matters their average academic performance.
