Experimental study of an in-fiber acousto-optic tunable bandpass filter for single- and dual-wavelength operation in a thulium-doped fiber laser

A tunable single- and dual-wavelength thulium-doped all-fiber laser is demonstrated based on the implementation of an in-fiber acousto-optic tunable bandpass filter (AOTBF). The AOTBF is fabricated to be operated in the 1.9 µm region, and takes advantage of the intermodal coupling effect produced by traveling flexural acoustic waves in an optical fiber. It exhibits a 3-dB bandwidth of 2.04 nm with an insertion loss of 4.75 dB. The tuning properties of the AO device allows a continuous-wave operation with characteristics of wide tuning range (211.5 nm), narrow linewidth (50 pm) and high signal-to-noise ratio (60 dB). Time calibration of the ANTARES neutrino telescope

The ANTARES deep-sea neutrino telescope comprises a three-dimensional array of photomultipliers to detect the Cherenkov light induced by upgoing relativistic charged particles originating from neutrino interactions in the vicinity of the detector. The large scattering length of light in the deep sea facilitates an angular resolution of a few tenths of a degree for neutrino energies exceeding 10 TeV. In order to achieve this optimal performance, the time calibration procedures should ensure a relative time calibration between the photomultipliers at the level of ~1 ns. The methods developed to attain this level of precision are described.
MSc course program on biomedical optics

A new Msc study course program on biomedical optics has been developed and adapted. The program consists of three main parts. (1) Fundamentals of tissue optics, (2) Optical sensing for diagnostics and monitoring, (3) Laser-tissue interaction and laser treatment. The full program and some comments on it are presented.

The directionality of interaction of electron-deficient π systems with spherical anions (e.g,. halides) can be controlled by secondary effects like NH or CH hydrogen bonding. In this study a series of pentafluorophenyl-substituted salts with polyhalide anions is investigated. The compounds are obtained by aerobic oxidation of the corresponding halide upon crystallization. Solid-state structures reveal that in bromide 2, directing NH-anion interactions position the bromide ion in an η(1)-type fashion over but not in the center of the aromatic ring. Because coordination is essential to work quality and well-being at work, it is important to understand the processes that construct work coordination. Purpose – The aim of this paper is to study age-related differences in how perceptions of two forms of organizational justice, i.e. procedural and interactional justice, are related to short (i.e. non-certified) spells and long (i.e. medically certified) spells of sickness absence. The dominant research strands into social interaction in culturally diverse workplaces have focused on issues of organizational efficiency and discrimination, and they have treated cultural identity as static, monolithic, and universally shared. This study aims to problematize this view.
