Giant Negative Magnetoresistance Driven by Spin-Orbit Coupling at theLaAlO3/SrTiO3Interface

2015

The LaAlO3=SrTiO3 interface hosts a two-dimensional electron system that is unusually sensitive to the application of an in-plane magnetic field. Low-temperature experiments have revealed a giant negative magnetoresistance (dropping by 70%), attributed to a magnetic-field induced transition between interacting phases of conduction electrons with Kondo-screened magnetic impurities. Here we report on experiments over a broad temperature range, showing the persistence of the magnetoresistance up to the 20 K range—indicative of a single-particle mechanism. Motivated by a striking correspondence between the temperature and carrier density dependence of our magnetoresistance measurements we propo…

Coherent photoproduction of η-mesons off 3He – search for η-mesic nuclei

2012

Coherent photoproduction of $\eta$-mesons off $^3$He, i.e. the reaction $\gamma ^3{He}\rightarrow \eta ^3{He}$, has been investigated in the near-threshold region. The experiment was performed at the Glasgow tagged photon facility of the Mainz MAMI accelerator with the combined Crystal Ball - TAPS detector. Angular distributions and the total cross section were measured using the $\eta\rightarrow \gamma\gamma$ and $\eta\rightarrow 3\pi^0\rightarrow 6\gamma$ decay channels. The observed extremely sharp rise of the cross section at threshold and the behavior of the angular distributions are evidence for a strong $\eta {^3{He}}$ final state interaction, pointing to the existence of a resonant …

A multispacecraft analysis of a small-scale transient entrained by solar wind streams

2009

The images taken by the Heliospheric Imagers (HIs), part of the SECCHI imaging package onboard the pair of STEREO spacecraft, provide information on the radial and latitudinal evolution of the plasma compressed inside corotating interaction regions (CIRs). A plasma density wave imaged by the HI instrument onboard STEREO-B was found to propagate towards STEREO-A, enabling a comparison between simultaneous remote-sensing and in situ observations of its structure to be performed. In situ measurements made by STEREO-A show that the plasma density wave is associated with the passage of a CIR. The magnetic field compressed after the CIR stream interface (SI) is found to have a planar distribution…

Measurement of the Magnetic Moment of the One-Neutron Halo NucleusB11e

1999

The magnetic moment of ${}^{11}\mathrm{Be}$ ( ${T}_{1/2}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}13.8\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{s}$) was measured by detecting nuclear magnetic resonance signals in a beryllium crystal lattice. The experimental technique applied to a ${}^{11}{\mathrm{Be}}^{+}$ ion beam from a laser ion source includes in-beam optical polarization, implantation into a metallic single crystal, and observation of rf resonances in the asymmetric angular distribution of the $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay ( $\ensuremath{\beta}$-NMR). The nuclear magnetic moment $\ensuremath{\mu}{(}^{11}\mathrm{Be})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\ensuremath{-}1.6816(8…

Model calculations of phase diagrams of magnetic alloys on the body-centered-cubic lattice.

1987

We treat a model for a binary (AB) alloy, where species A is magnetic (Ising spin σi = ± 1) while species B is not, and repulsive interactions are assumed between first and second neighbors of the same kind, in addition to a nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic exchange interaction. Both the mean-field approximation, the cluster variation (CV) method in the tetrahedron approximation and the Monte Carlo (MC) method are applied; comparing the phase diagrams obtained by the various approximations their accuracy is tested. It is shown that the CV method is in rather close agreement with the MC method for the present problem.

Casimir-Polder interaction between an accelerated two-level system and an infinite plate

2007

We investigate the Casimir-Polder interaction energy between a uniformly accelerated two-level system and an infinite plate with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Our model is a two-level atom interacting with a massless scalar field, with a uniform acceleration in a direction parallel to the plate. We consider the contributions of vacuum fluctuations and of the radiation reaction field to the atom-wall Casimir-Polder interaction, and we discuss their dependence on the acceleration of the atom. We show that, as a consequence of the noninertial motion of the two-level atom, a thermal term is present in the vacuum fluctuation contribution to the Casimir-Polder interaction. Finally we discuss the…

Configuration-interaction calculations of jellium clusters by the nuclear shell model

1994

Configuration-interaction (CI) calculations are performed on Na clusters of up to 20 atoms within the spherical jellium model, with particular attention paid to the magic clusters with N=2, 8, and 20. The interacting valence electrons are assumed to move in the Coulomb field of the jellium core. The numerical work is carried out by the nuclear-structure code oxbash modified to handle LS coupling. The many-particle bases are constructed of harmonic-oscillator single-particle states extending over 11 major shells and, alternatively, of single-particle states generated by the local-spin-density approximation (LSDA). The calculated quantities include ground- and excited state energies, ionizati…

Spin-orbit interaction in bremsstrahlung and its effect on the electron motion in a strong Coulomb field

2015

Linear polarization of bremsstrahlung x rays produced in collisions of longitudinally polarized 2.1-MeV electrons with gold atoms was studied using the Compton scattering technique. We observed that the angle of x-ray polarization is strongly correlated with the incoming electron polarization. This correlation reveals the dominance of the spin-orbit interaction in bremsstrahlung and indicates a striking effect of the electron spin on the electron motion in a strong Coulomb field. The results confirm the validity of the theoretical predictions in a computationally challenging energy regime.
