Noise effects in two different biological systems

We investigate the role of the colored noise in two biological systems: (i) adults of Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), and (ii) polymer translocation. In the first system we analyze, by directionality tests, the response of N. viridula individuals to subthreshold signals plus noise in their mating behaviour. The percentage of insects that react to the subthreshold signal shows a nonmonotonic behaviour, characterized by the presence of a maximum, as a function of the noise intensity. On the unification of electroweak interactions with gravity

It is shown that the electroweak interactions in the Salam-Weinberg model can be described by a space-time connection form which preserves the space-time metric multiplied by a conformal factor. In addition, one needs an extraSO(2)-connection form. The Dirac field in this formalism is described (after making a certain regularity assumption) by a vierbein field for the space-time metric and a complex scalar field.

The standard weak- and strong-coupling perturbation series are interpreted as extreme special cases of expansions obtainable within the framework of Rayleigh-Schroedinger perturbation theory with non-diagonal propagators and unspecified zero-order energies. The formalism of the latter type is then tested by our strongly singular example. It proves suitable for applications in the domain of virtually arbitrary couplings. A few related technicalities and especially the quadruple problem of convergence are also discussed.

Search for anomalous electroweak production of WW/WZ in association with a high-mass dijet system in pp collisions at s=8  TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search is presented for anomalous quartic gauge boson couplings in vector-boson scattering. The data for the analysis correspond to $20.2$ fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV $pp$ collisions, and were collected in 2012 by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The search looks for the production of $WW$ or $WZ$ boson pairs accompanied by a high-mass dijet system, with one $W$ decaying leptonically, and a $W$ or $Z$ decaying hadronically. The Physics of the Higgs-like Boson

The present knowledge on the Higgs-like boson discovered at the LHC is summarized. The data accumulated so far are consistent with the Standard Model predictions and put interesting constraints on alternative scenarios of electroweak symmetry breaking. The measured couplings to gauge bosons and third-generation fermions indicate that a Higgs particle has indeed been found. More precise data are needed to clarify whether it is the unique Higgs boson of the Standard Model or the first member of a new variety of dynamical (either elementary or composite) fields.

Higgs production and decay in models of a warped extra dimension with a bulk Higgs

Warped extra-dimension models in which the Higgs boson is allowed to propagate in the bulk of a compact AdS5 space are conjectured to be dual to models featuring a partially composite Higgs boson. They offer a framework with which to investigate the implications of changing the scaling dimension of the Higgs operator, which can be used to reduce the constraints from electroweak precision data. In the context of such models, we calculate the cross section for Higgs production in gluon fusion and the H → γγ decay rate and show that they are finite (at one-loop order) as a consequence of gauge invariance. Electroweak precision data and right-handed gauge bosons

The implication of recent electroweak precision data for left-right symmetric models is examined. We establish a lower bound on the charged and neutral right-handed gauge bosons independent of the right-handed neutrino mass and of any restrictions or implied symmetries on the right KM matrix.

Full configuration interaction calculation of Be3.

The full configuration interaction (FCI) study of the ground state of the neutral beryllium trimer has been performed using an atomic natural orbitals [3s2p1d] basis set. Both triangular and linear structures have been considered for the Be(3) cluster. The optimal geometry for the equilateral triangle has been calculated. The potential energy cut sections along the normal a(1)(') mode and one of the components of the e(') mode have then been studied. The FCI symmetric atomization potential of the linear cluster is also reported. It shows a secondary van der Waals minimum at a long bond distance. Equation-of-motion coupled cluster perturbation theory revisited

The equation-of-motion coupled cluster (EOM-CC) framework has been used for deriving a novel series of perturbative corrections to the coupled cluster singles and doubles energy that formally con- verges towards the full configuration interaction energy limit. The series is based on a Møller-Plesset partitioning of the Hamiltonian and thus size extensive at any order in the perturbation, thereby rem- edying the major deficiency inherent to previous perturbation series based on the EOM-CC ansatz. © 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.
