On the influence of the supporting frame on the nuclear response of the Helium-Cooled Lithium Lead Test Blanket Module for ITER
2006
Abstract Within the European Fusion Technology Programme, very intense research activities have been promoted on the Helium-Cooled Lithium Lead (HCLL) breeding blanket concept with the specific aim of manufacturing a Test Blanket Module (TBM) to be irradiated in ITER. HCLL-TBM is foreseen to be located in an ITER equatorial port, being housed inside a proper steel-supporting frame. In particular, since that frame has been designed to provide two cavities separated by a dividing plate and HCLL-TBM is foreseen to fill just one of them, its nuclear response could vary accordingly to the filling status of the other one, unless the dividing plate is thick enough to isolate the components housed …
Intra-specific variability and biological relevance of P3N-PIPO protein length in potyviruses
2013
Background:Pipo was recently described as a new ORF encoded within the genome of the Potyviridae family members (PNAS 105:5897-5902, 2008). It is embedded within the P3 cistron and is translated in the +2 reading frame relative to the potyviral long ORF as the P3N-PIPO fusion protein. In this work, we first collected pipo nucleotide sequences available for different isolates of 48 Potyvirus species. Second, to determine the biological implications of variation in pipo length, we measured infectivity, viral accumulation, cell-to-cell and systemic movements for two Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) variants with pipo alleles of different length in three different susceptible host species, and tested…
The poetry of the web : online ethnography of ordinary poets
2021
Through the observation of blogs, online reviews and accounts and profiles on Facebook and Twitter, this research is devoted to the online poetic activities of French-speaking poets (Belgium, France, Quebec, Switzerland). This research work is guided by a simple and general question: how do poets invent their own ways of making poetry with the web? I was interested in poetry being done empirically by focusing on observation, data collection and encounters with poets in an approach inspired by ethnographyGoing beyond the separation between amateurs and professionals, the analysis follows the interactions between these ordinary poets and the tools of the web. During learning, settling into th…
The implicit in "In search of lost ime" : study on an aspect of proustien speech
2013
The implicit is defined as content present in speech without being formally expressed. Presupposition and implied content are the two fundamental elements of this concept. They act as information implied in speech whose essence the speaker can grasp or decrypt using the theories of pragmatics and enunciative linguistics. Proustian speech constitutes a remarkable example of the use of the implicit and its concepts. The present work is entirely devoted to the search for the implicit in Proust’s In Search of Lost Time. In our work, the development of this concept emerges especially in the verbal interaction between Proust's characters, also, through the speech of the narrator who opts for a ne…
The Ethical and Political Contours of Institutional Promotion in eSports: From Precariat Models to Sustainable Practices
2020
This study evaluated five early cases in which esport developer Riot Games made rulings regarding activities and infractions by members of various institutions related to its product, League of Legends. The findings of this study support future theoretical exploration of other esports in seeking a fuller understanding of issues related to consent, power differentials, and roles and behaviors expected of the institutional activities of players and teams in competition. Increased investigation of these—and other—issues from an ethical standpoint could lead to a framework that not only would facilitate future study but also bring opportunities for improvements in practices in concert with nece…
Anxiété et manipulation parasitaire chez un invertébré aquatique : approches évolutive et mécanistique
2020
Trophically transmitted parasites induce changes in their host’s phenotype. These changes are supposed to increase transmission probability to definitive hosts through the predation of intermediate hosts. This phenomenon is known as ‘parasite manipulation’ has been hypothesized to be an adaptive trait of parasites for a long time. As manipulation involves predator-prey interactions, it is therefore necessary to understand how antipredatory behaviours are modulated by exogenous (predation pressure) and endogenous (infection, emotional state) factors. We tried to go into this phenomenon in depth, in amphipods, by responding toseveral questions : (1) what is the extent of the multidimensionali…

System aspects of sharing a virtual reality
1998
We have recently held the second annual "System Aspects of Sharing a Virtual Reality" workshop, in conjunction with CVE '98 (see report in this issue). The single-day format allowed for twelve presentations plus discussion, which are summarized below. The topics addressed were: designing systems to cope with network limitations; managing communication and information; the construction of systems and toolkits; issues of presentation and user interaction; and application development and evaluation.
Characterization of trophic links in an agrosystem : weed seed predation by carabid beetles
2012
Agroecology gives evidence of new perspectives in agriculture, and open doors for alternative weed management approaches through different regulation mechanisms. Seed predation is one of them, and the interest is growing to deepen knowledge, relative to this process. This Phd work aims (i) to describe weed seed predation, the dominant carabid predators and the available resource at a local scale in a common crop (winter wheat); (ii) to study predation profiles of main predators, and the pair-wise correlations between the biological components of the system; (iii) to bring new insights regarding potential regulation of weed communities, through seed predation by carabid beetles. Complementar…
