A Semiotic Approach to the Design of Non-speech Sounds

2006

In the field of auditory display there is currently a lack of theoretical support for the design of non-speech sounds as elements of a user interface. Sound design methods are often based on ad hoc choices or the personal preferences of the designer. A method is proposed in this paper based on a semiotic approach to the design of non-speech sounds. In this approach, the design process is conceptualised by referring to structural semiotics, acknowledging the unique qualities of non-speech sounds, as a mode of conveying information. This method is based on a rich use scenario presented to a design panel. A case study where the design method has been applied is presented and evaluated. Finally…

Designing Gesture-Based Control for Factory Automation

2013

We report the development and evaluation of a gesture-based interaction prototype for controlling the loading station of a factory automation system. In this context, gesture-based interaction has the potential to free users from the tedious physical controls but it must also account for safety considerations and users’ perceptions. We evaluated the gesture interaction concept in the field to understand its applicability to industrial settings. Our findings suggest that gesture-based interaction is an emotional, physically charged experience that has the potential to enhance the work process. Participants’ feedback also highlighted challenges related to the reliability of gesture recognitio…

Prediction of user action in moving-target selection tasks

2015

Selection of moving targets is a common, yet complex task in human–computer interaction (HCI), and more specifically in virtual reality (VR). Action prediction has proven to be the most comprehensive enhancement to address moving-target selection challenges. Current predictive techniques, however, heavily rely on continuous tracking of user actions, without considering the possibility that target-reaching actions may have a dominant pre-programmed component—this theory is known as the pre-programmed control theory. Thus, based on the pre-programmed control theory, this research explores the possibility of predicting moving-target selection prior to action execution. Specifically, three level…

Kartlegging av samhandlingsfaktorer knyttet til oppfølging av pasienter med gynekologisk kreft

2019

Masteroppgave folkehelsevitenskap ME516 - Universitetet i Agder 2019 Summary:This qualitative study higlights that lack of intangible resources such as time and availability are the most importent factors affecting vertical and horizontal interaction between health professionals in primary health care and specialist health care. It is emphasized that time is the single most important factorthat can both promote and inhibit interdisciplinary and cross-sectorial interactionbetween health proffesionals. The study highlights that these are the same factors that can promote or inhibit this interaction. Keywords: Interaction, primary healt care, intangible resources

Investigating the User Experience of Virtual Reality Rehabilitation Solution for Biomechatronics Laboratory and Home Environment

2021

Virtual reality (VR) technology is a promising tool in physical rehabilitation. Research indicates that VR-supported rehabilitation is beneficial for task-specific training, multi-sensory feedback, diversified rehabilitation tasks, and patient motivation. Our first goal was to create a biomechatronics laboratory with a VR setup for increasing immersion and a motion platform to provide realistic feedback to patients. The second goal was to investigate possibilities to replicate features of the biomechatronics laboratory in a home-based training system using commercially available components. The laboratory comprises of a motion platform with 6-degrees-of-freedom (Rexroth eMotion), fitted wit…

Characterization of field isolates of Trichoderma antagonistic against Rhizoctonia solani.

2010

The aim of the present study was to characterize sixteen isolates of Trichoderma originating from a field of sugar beet where disease patches caused by Rhizoctonia solani were observed. Use of both molecular and morphological characteristics gave consistent identification of the isolates. Production of water-soluble and volatile inhibitors, mycoparasitism and induced systemic resistance in plant host were investigated using in vitro and in vivo tests in both sterilized and natural soils. This functional approach revealed the intra-specific diversity as well as biocontrol potential of the different isolates. Different antagonistic mechanisms were evident for different strains. The most antag…

Origin of the Paramagnetic Properties of the Mixed‐Valence Polyoxometalate [GeV 14 O 40 ] 8– Reduced by Two Electrons: Wave Function Theory and Model…

2009

The aim of the work is to give an explanation of the magnetic properties of a mixed-valence [GeV14O40]8– polyoxometalate reduced by two electrons, which, in contrast to what happens in other two-electron-reduced polyoxometalates, does not show any magnetic coupling between the two unpaired electrons. For this purpose, a quantitative evaluation of the microscopic electronic parameters (electron transfer, magnetic coupling, magnetic orbital energy, and Coulomb repulsion) of the mixed-valence polyoxometalate cluster is performed. The parameters are extracted from valence-spectroscopy large configuration interaction (CI) calculations on embedded fragments. Then, these parameters are used in an …

Full configuration interaction calculation of the low lying valence and Rydberg states of BeH

2007

The all-electron full configuration interaction (FCI) vertical excitation energies for some low lying valence and Rydberg excited states of BeH are presented in this article. A basis set of valence atomic natural orbitals has been augmented with a series of Rydberg orbitals that have been generated as centered onto the Be atom. The resulting basis set can be described as 4s2p1d/2s1p (Be/H) + 4s4p3d. It allows to calculate Rydberg states up to n= {3,4,5} of the s, p, and d series of Rydberg states. The FCI vertical ionization potential for the same basis set and geometry amounts to 8.298 eV. Other properties such as FCI electric dipole and quadrupole moments and FCI transition dipole and qua…

Mixed‐valence trinuclear manganese clusters : Influence of the electronic transfer on the magnetic properties

1990

The magnetic behavior of mixed‐valence trinuclear clusters d4‐d4‐d5 is discussed on the basis of a model which takes into account valence delocalization and Heisenberg exchange. This model considers the competing effect between the electronic transfer and the localization of the extra electron due to an asymmetry of the triangular entity. The magnetic properties of the mixed‐valence oxo‐centered Mn(II)‐Mn(III)‐Mn(III) complexes formulated as Mn3O(O2CR)6L3 (R=Me, L=pyridine) are discussed on the basis of the developed model, supporting a significant intramolecular electron transfer. A comparison of these results to those previously reported by assuming a valence‐trapped model is given. Carlo…
