Power and politeness in historical novels set during the American Civil War
2015
An ACT-R Based Humanoid Social Robot to Manage Storytelling Activities
2020
This paper describes an interactive storytelling system, accessible through the SoftBank robotic platforms NAO and Pepper. The main contribution consists of the interpretation of the story characters by humanoid robots, obtained through the definition of appropriate cognitive models, relying on the ACT-R cognitive architecture. The reasoning processes leading to the story evolution are based on the represented knowledge and the suggestions of the listener in critical points of the story. They are disclosed during the narration, to make clear the dynamics of the story and the feelings of the characters. We analyzed the impact of such externalization of the internal status of the characters t…
Self-assembly mechanism based on charge density topological interaction energies
2017
The packing interactions have been evaluated in the context of the self-assembly mechanism of crystal growth and also for its impacts on the aromaticity of the trimesate anion. The structure of ethylammonium trimesate hydrate (1) measured at 100 K and a charge density model, derived in part from theoretical structures, is reported. Theoretical structure factors were obtained from the geometry-optimized periodic wave function. The trimesic acid portion of 1 is fully deprotonated and participates in a variety hydrogen bonding motifs. Topological analysis of the charge density model reveals the most significant packing interactions and is then compared to a complementary analysis performed by …
Halogen Bonds in Square Planar 2,5-Dihalopyridine-Copper(II) Bromide Complexes
2018
Halogen bonding in self-complementary 1:2 metal–ligand complexes obtained from copper(II) bromide (CuBr2) and seven 2,5-dihalopyridines were analyzed using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. All presented discrete complexes form 1D polymeric chains connected with C–X···Br–Cu halogen bonds (XB). In (2-chloro-5-X-pyridine)2·CuBr2 (X = Cl, Br, and I) only the C5-halogen and in (2-bromo-5-X-pyridine)2·CuBr2 (X = Cl, Br, and I) both C2- and C5-halogens form C–X···Br–Cu halogen bonds with the X acting as the XB donor and copper-coordinated bromide as the XB acceptor. The electron-withdrawing C2-chloride in (2-chloro-5-X-pyridine)2·CuBr2 complexes has only a minor effect on the C5–X5···Br–Cu XBs, a…
Interpersonality Strategies in International Student Handbooks Written by Native Speakers of English (NSE) and Non-native Speakers of English (NNSE)
2014
Summary of the doctoral dissertation Interpersonality Strategies in International Student Handbooks Written by Native Speakers of English (NSE) and Non-native Speakers of English (NNSE) Tesis doctoral presentada por: Stan McDaniel Mann Valencia, 2014 Have you ever read a brochure or handbook written in English by a non-native speaker of English (NNSE), noticed that the grammar and syntax was excellent and the terminology was near-perfect, but you still did not understand the essence of what the author was trying to communicate, or you had the feeling that the information was ambiguous? It was precisely for these two reasons that this research on interpersonality strategies was carried out. …

Breeding near heterospecifics as a defence against brood parasites: can redstarts lower probability of cuckoo parasitism using neighbours?
2022
Breeding habitat choice based on the attraction to other species can provide valuable social information and protection benefits. In birds, species with overlapping resources can be a cue of good quality habitats; species with shared predators and/or brood parasites can increase joint vigilance or cooperative mobbing, while raptors may provide a protective umbrella against these threats. We tested whether the migratory common redstart (Phoenicurus phoenicurus) is attracted to breed near active nests of the great tit (Parus major), a keystone-information source for migrant passerine birds, or a top predator, the northern goshawk (Accipiter gentilis). This system is unique to test these quest…
Artificial selection of microbial communities: the effect of diversity and the role of interspecific interactions
2021
In agriculture, the plants and animals that are bred come from long-term artificial selection procedures that aim at producing individuals with desirable traits. Such procedures can be applied at levels of biological organization higher than the individual such as the community level, which is of particular interest in the field of microbial community engineering. Indeed, microbial communities play key roles in agriculture but also in the environment, health and industry, and a growing body of literature shows promising results regarding the artificial selection of microbial communities for desirable functions. However, for artificial selection procedures at the community level to be effici…
Data from: I smell where you walked – how chemical cues influence movement decisions in ants
2016
Interactions between animals are not restricted to direct encounters. Frequently, individuals detect the proximity of others through cues unintentionally left by others, such as prey species assessing predation risk based on indirect predator cues. However, while the importance of indirect cues in predator–prey interactions has been intensely studied, their role in interactions among competitors, and their consequences for community structure, are little known to date. Ant communities are usually structured by aggressive interactions between competing species. Responding to cues of others should be useful to avoid competitors or discover food sources. In ants and other insects, such cues in…
