Elisabeth on Free Will, Preordination, and Philosophical Doubt
2021
Elisabeth is widely known as a critic of René Descartes' account of mind--body interaction and scholarly interpretations of her view on the will most often pose the question about the freedom of the will in relation to bodily impulses such as the passions. This chapter takes a different perspective and focuses on the problem of the compatibility of free will and providence, as it is discussed in a sequence of six letters that Elisabeth and Descartes wrote between September 1645 and January 1646. The chapter focuses on this specific metaphysical problem in order to ask what Elisabeth's remarks on the topic can tell about her general philosophical method as well as about her particular philos…
Bridging the Divide : understanding interactions between international and home students in U.S. secondary schools
2016
Huizinga, Rick H. 2016. Bridging the Divide: Understanding interactions between international and home students in U.S. secondary schools. Master's Thesis in Education. University of Jyväskylä. Department of Education. The increasing numbers of international students have been well-documented in universities around the world—particularly in English-speaking nations such as the United States. Less documented, however, is the similar growth of international student numbers in private secondary schools in the United States. Unlike in university international programs, little research has been done on the topic of interactions between home and international students at this educational level. U…
Technology in culture : a theoretical discourse on convergence in human-technology interaction
2014
Technology touches so many facets of contemporary life that one is not necessarily conscious any more of how and why it affects daily experience. Awareness of technology’s role often surfaces only when something goes wrong with a product. At that moment, people become aware of a misalignment between their ways of thinking, feeling and behaving, and the form/function of a product, presumably designed to make life easier. Equally ubiquitous and beyond daily awareness are cognitive, affective, and behavioural processes patterned by culture. It has been noted that cultural factors influence the perception and usage of technology. Understanding these processes is important to researchers, design…
Antipredatory function of head shape for vipers and their mimics.
2011
Most research into the adaptive significance of warning signals has focused on the colouration and patterns of prey animals. However, behaviour, odour and body shape can also have signal functions and thereby reduce predators' willingness to attack defended prey. European vipers all have a distinctive triangular head shape; and they are all venomous. Several non-venomous snakes, including the subfamily Natricinae, commonly flatten their heads (also known as head triangulation) when disturbed. The adaptive significance of this potential behavioural mimicry has never been investigated. We experimentally tested if the triangular head shape typical of vipers offers protection against predation.…
How Hand Gestures Contribute to Action Ascription
2019
This article investigates the embodied achievement of intersubjectivity by analyzing depictive gestures that are produced during the final components of the ongoing verbal TCU and extended into the following turn transition space. The depictive gestures in focus elaborate the TCUs by providing additional information on the verbal content of the turn. They may, for example, provide a visual representation of an action that is referred to in the verbal TCU, depict details that are not referred to in talk, or perform bodily enactments that model projected next actions. The analysis demonstrates that timed in this way, the gestures contribute to the multimodal action package that they are part …

Apperceiving visual elements in human-technology interaction design
2017
Visual design of technological artefacts is an integral part of peoples’ experiences in technology-interaction. Visual product properties are capable of eliciting affective responses and multisensorial experiences in human- technology interaction. Current research in the field of human-technology interaction focuses on visual, emotional and multisensory aspects of interaction in addition to functionality and usability. However, the focus has not been on how performative aspects of visual elements affect technology-interaction as a cognitive sense making process shaping human experiences. To design technological contact points to be made sense of, the substance of visual representations requ…

Is There Any Hope for Developing Automated Translation Technology for Sign Languages?
2021
This article discusses the prerequisites for the machine translation of sign languages. The topic is complex, including questions relating to technology, interaction design, linguistics and culture. At the moment, despite the affordances provided by the technology, automated translation between signed and spoken languages – or between sign languages – is not possible. The very need of such translation and its associated technology can also be questioned. Yet, we believe that contributing to the improvement of sign language detection, processing and even sign language translation to spoken languages in the future is a matter that should not be abandoned. However, we argue that this work shou…
Language acquisition through interaction between gamers in digital gaming environments
2014
Internetin kautta pelattavat moninpelit tarjoavat monenlaisia mahdollisuuksia harjoitella Englannin kielitaitoa, sekä käyttää sitä hyväksi erilaisissa kommunikointitilanteissa. Pelien hyötyä kieltenoppimisessa on jo jonkin verran tutkittu, mutta tutkimus rajoittuu suurelta osin itse pelien sisältöihin. Lähivuosina internetin kautta pelaaminen yhdessä toisten pelaajien kanssa on yleistynyt, mikä on avannut keskustelua myös pelien interaktiivisuuden vaikutuksista kielitaitoon. Internetissä tapaa usein pelaajia monista erilaisista kulttuureista ja taustoista, mikä rikastuttaa kielikulttuuria sekä mahdollistaa kielenkäytön harjoittelun matalan kynnyksen tilanteissa. Suomalaiset pelaavat interne…
