Limits on neutral Higgs boson production in the forward region in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV
2013
Limits on the cross-section times branching fraction for neutral Higgs bosons, produced in p p collisions at root s = 7 TeV, and decaying to two tau leptons with pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.5, are presented. The result is based on a dataset, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb(-1), collected with the LHCb detector. Candidates are identified by reconstructing final states with two muons, a muon and an electron, a muon and a hadron, or an electron and a hadron. A model independent upper limit at the 95% confidence level is set on a neutral Higgs boson cross-section times branching fraction. It varies from 8.6 pb for a Higgs boson mass of 90 GeV to 0.7 pb for a Higgs bos…
Climate warming and disease risks in temperate regions – Argulus coregoni and Diplostomum spathaceum as case studies
2006
AbstractThe link between climate changes and disease risks from various pathogens has been increasingly recognized. The effect of climatic factors on host–parasite population dynamics is particularly evident in northern latitudes where the occurrence and transmission of parasites are strongly regulated by seasonality-driven changes in environmental temperatures. Shortened winter periods would increase growth potential of many parasite populations. The ways in which climate warming could affect life history dynamics of the directly transmitted crustacean ectoparasite Argulus coregoni and complex life cycle trematode Diplostomum spathaceum, which frequently cause problems in northern fish far…
Within-host interactions shape virulence-related traits of trematode genotypes
2019
Within‐host interactions between co‐infecting parasites can significantly influence the evolution of key parasite traits, such as virulence (pathogenicity of infection). The type of interaction is expected to predict the direction of selection, with antagonistic interactions favouring more virulent genotypes and synergistic interactions less virulent genotypes. Recently, it has been suggested that virulence can further be affected by the genetic identity of co‐infecting partners (G × G interactions), complicating predictions on disease dynamics. Here, we used a natural host–parasite system including a fish host and a trematode parasite to study the effects of G × G interactions on infection…
Land-sea interactions: case studies from the Baltic Sea Region
2021
Research background: Nowadays, mainstream discussions on maritime spatial planning (MSP) are tightly intertwined with the discourse on governance for land-sea interactions or interface (LSI), using multi-scalar and cross-sectoral governance systems. At the same time, principles with legal rank need to be respected and applied in both MSP and LSI and their respective governance structures while putting coastal communities at the centre and taking into consideration the process of “maritimisation.” In combination, these factors contribute to augmenting the pressure of competing uses both on land and sea in the frame of the Blue Economy. As an exemplary forerunner in the field of MSP, the Balt…
Structure and physical properties of [mu-tris(1,4-bis(tetrazol-1-yl)butane-N4,N4 ')iron(II)] bis(hexafluorophosphate), a new Fe(II) spin-crossover co…
2004
[mu-Tris(1,4-bis(tetrazol-1-yl)butane-N4,N4')iron(II)] bis(hexafluorophosphate), [Fe(btzb)(3)](PF6)(2), crystallizes in a three-dimensional 3-fold interlocked structure featuring a sharp two-step spin-crossover behavior. The spin conversion takes place between 164 and 182 K showing a discontinuity at about T-1/2 = 174 K and a hysteresis of about 4 K between T-1/2 and the low-spin state. The spin transition has been independently followed by magnetic susceptibility measurements, Fe-57-Mossbauer spectroscopy, and variable temperature far and midrange FIR spectroscopy. The title compound crystallizes in the trigonal space group P (3) over bar (No. 147) with a unit cell content of one formula u…
Gamow-Teller response in the configuration space of a density-functional-theory–rooted no-core configuration-interaction model
2018
Background: The atomic nucleus is a unique laboratory in which to study fundamental aspects of the electroweak interaction. This includes a question concerning in medium renormalization of the axial-vector current, which still lacks satisfactory explanation. Study of spin-isospin or Gamow-Teller (GT) response may provide valuable information on both the quenching of the axial-vector coupling constant as well as on nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics.Purpose: We have performed a seminal calculation of the GT response by using the no-core configuration-interaction approach rooted in multireference density functional theory (DFT-NCCI). The model treats properly isospin and rotational sy…
Mutations in DNA Binding and Transactivation Domains Affect the Dynamics of Parvovirus NS1 Protein
2013
ABSTRACT The multifunctional replication protein of autonomous parvoviruses, NS1, is vital for viral genome replication and for the control of viral protein production. Two DNA-interacting domains of NS1, the N-terminal and helicase domains, are necessary for these functions. In addition, the N and C termini of NS1 are required for activation of viral promoter P38. By comparison with the structural and biochemical data from other parvoviruses, we identified potential DNA-interacting amino acid residues from canine parvovirus NS1. The role of the identified amino acids in NS1 binding dynamics was studied by mutagenesis, fluorescence recovery after photobleaching, and computer simulations. Mu…
Precision measurement of D meson mass differences
2013
Using three- and four-body decays of D mesons produced in semileptonic b-hadron decays, precision measurements of D meson mass differences are made together with a measurement of the D-0 mass. The measurements are based on a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb(-1) collected in pp collisions at 7 TeV. Using the decay D-0 -> K+K-K-pi(+), the D-0 mass is measured to be M(D-0) = 1864.75 +/- 0.15 (stat) +/- 0.11 (syst) MeV/c(2). The mass differences M(D+) - M(D-0) = 4.76 +/- 0.12 (stat) +/- 0.07 (syst) MeV/c(2), M(D-s(+)) - M(D+) = 98.68 +/- 0.03 (stat) +/- 0.04 (syst) MeV/c(2) are measured using the D-0 -> K+K-pi(+)pi(-) and D-(s)(+) -> K+K-pi(+) modes.
