In the interactions between social parasites and their hosts, aggression is one of the major behavioural traits under selection. In a field manipulation, we aimed to disentangle the impact of slavemaking ants and nest density on aggression of Temnothorax longispinosus ants. Fascioliasis pathogenesis depends on fluke burden. In human hyperendemic zones, individual infection intensities reach very high levels and the majority of infected subjects should be in the advanced chronic phase. The rat model offers a useful approach for pathological research in the advanced chronic period. The influence of infection intensity per rat on fluke development, pre-patent period and egg shedding (eggs/g faeces/worm) was analysed in 3 groups (I: 1–3 worms/rat; II: 4–6; III: 7–9). In spite of its major impact on life-long health, the process of microbial succession in the gut of infants remains poorly understood. Here, we analyze the patterns of taxonomic and functional change in the gut microbiota during the first year of life for a birth cohort of 13 infants. We detect that individual instances of gut colonization vary in the temporal dynamics of microbiota richness, diversity, and composition at both functional and taxonomic levels. Nevertheless, trends discernible in a majority of infants indicate that gut colonization occurs in two distinct phases of succession, separated by the introduction of solid foods to the diet. The present study was planned to investigate the kinetic transport of zinc, in the intact intestine of the rat, in order to establish if more than one transporter is involved as well as the existence of a preferent sector in the cation uptake. Using an in vitro technique, the influx of zinc across the brush border membrane in three sectors of the small intestine (proximal, mid and distal) and in the colon of the rat was measured at six different concentrations (from 0.0007 to 11 mM). Experiments were carried out in the isolated spleen of the rat to study in a lymphoid organ the influence of interleukins (ILs) on noradrenaline release. Spleens were perfused with Tyrode's solution and the overflow of endogenous noradrenaline was determined by HPLC with electrochemical detection. Abstract Supplementation of rat diet with butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), butylated hydroxyanisole, or ethoxyquin resulted in increased liver epoxide hydratase activity. The increase was obvious at 0.1% and amounted to 200–400% at 0.5%. Increased activity was accompanied by increased proportion of the epoxide hydratase band in SDS polyacrylamide gels, indicating induction of the enzyme.
