Lorentzian-geometry-based analysis of airplane boarding policies highlights "slow passengers first" as better.
2019
We study airplane boarding in the limit of large number of passengers using geometric optics in a Lorentzian metric. The airplane boarding problem is naturally embedded in a 1+1 dimensional space-time with a flat Lorentzian metric. The duration of the boarding process can be calculated based on a representation of the one-dimensional queue of passengers attempting to reach their seats, into a two-dimensional space-time diagram. The ability of a passenger to delay other passengers depends on their queue positions and row designations. This is equivalent to the causal relationship between two events in space-time, whereas two passengers are time-like separated if one is blocking the other, an…
Isotope shifts from collinear laser spectroscopy of doubly charged yttrium isotopes
2018
Collinear laser spectroscopy has been performed on doubly charged ions of radioactive yttrium in order to study the isotope shifts of the 294.6-nm $5s\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{2}S_{1/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5p\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{2}P_{1/2}$ line. The potential of such an alkali-metal-like transition to improve the reliability of atomic-field-shift and mass-shift factor calculations, and hence the extraction of nuclear mean-square radii, is discussed. Production of yttrium ion beams for such studies is available at the IGISOL IV Accelerator Laboratory, Jyv\"askyl\"a, Finland. This newly recommissioned facility is described here in relation to the on-line study of accelerator-p…
Spin as Primordial Self-Referential Process Driving Quantum Mechanics, Spacetime Dynamics and Consciousness
2007
We have recently theorized that consciousness is intrinsically connected to quantum mechanical spin since said spin is embedded in the microscopic structure of spacetime and is more fundamental than spacetime itself, that is, spin is the “mind-pixel.” Applying these ideas to the particular structures and dynamics of the brain, we have developed a qualitative model of quantum consciousness. In this paper, we express our fundamental view that spin is a primordial self-referential process driving quantum mechanics, spacetime dynamics and consciousness. To justify such a view, we will draw support from existing literatures, discuss from a reductionist perspective the essential properties said s…
La pianificazione territoriale strategica fra la pianificazione ordinaria, la programmazione complessa e concertata e la sostenibilità ambientale e s…
2007
2021
My presentation focuses on interdisciplinarity and interculturality on the basis of two novels, "Les Nuits de Strasbourg" by Assia Djebar and "Le Village de l'Allemand ou le journal des frères Schiller" by Boualem Sansal. Firstly, I reflect in a general way on interdisciplinarity and its affinity with interculturality before addressing these issues in my corpus and in my work. Secondly, I look at some theories, interdisciplinary and sometimes intercultural, that help me to study my corpus in a harmonious way, which I illustrate with concrete analyses referring to the thought of Édouard Glissant. Finally, I propose interdisciplinary developments of an intercultural approach, that of Michael …

Make love, not war: a process-based approach to social innovation
2017
Traditional approaches to social innovation focus on products, services, and ideas that enable social problems to be solved. They also often view social innovation as resulting from a cross-fertilization between multiple stakeholders. We advocate for a process-based approach to social innovation internal to organizations, anchored in the concept of ethical love. While love, as a concept, has only received attention recently in academic management research, contrary to its common usage in psychology, we propose a philosophical and anthropological perspective on the call for love in organizations and distinguish with the help of the philosopher Levinas between political love and ethical love.…
Causal complexity of new product development processes : a mechanism-based approach
2018
The outcomes of new product development (NPD) processes are dependent on the interplay of several interdependent activities. One product development activity can be dependent on the presence or absence of other activities, different kinds of NDP processes may lead to the same outcome, and specific kinds of activities may have a positive effect in one process but no effect in other processes. However, we currently lack means to examine and explain this causal complexity inherent in NPD processes. To address this issue, we introduce mechanism-based approach as a way to capture conjunctural and equifinal causal relations. We build this approach on the philosophical literature on mechanism-base…
