Sunshine Policies and Murky Shadows in Europe: Disclosure of Pharmaceutical Industry Payments to Health Professionals in Nine European Countries
2018
Relationships between health professionals and pharmaceutical manufacturers can unduly influence clinical practice. These relationships are the focus of global transparency efforts, including in Europe. We conducted a descriptive content analysis of the transparency provisions implemented by February 2017 in nine European Union (EU) countries concerning payments to health professionals, with duplicate independent coding of all data. Using an author-generated, semi-structured questionnaire, we collected information from each disclosure policy/code on: target industries, categories of healthcare professionals covered, scope of payments included, location and searchability of the disclosed dat…
Identity, Instrumental Self-Interest and Institutional Evaluations: Explaining Public Opinion on Common European Policies in Foreign Affairs and Defe…
2008
This paper addresses public opinion on common European policies in foreign affairs and defence. It proposes three models of support for common policies in these fields. Drawing on Eurobarometer data, the analysis shows that instrumental self-interest and territorial identities contribute considerably to explaining support for common foreign affairs and defence policies. Moreover, support for common policies is strongly driven by domain-specific evaluations of the European Union's performance. These findings suggest that popular support for common European policies in foreign affairs and defence has an experiential base. Thus, elites have an incentive to respond to public opinion when makin…
Assessment of ecotoxicity and total volatile organic compound (TVOC) emissions from food and children's toy products
2018
The development of new methods for identifying a broad spectrum of analytes, as well as highly selective tools to provide the most accurate information regarding the processes and relationships in the world, has been an area of interest for researchers for many years. The information obtained with these tools provides valuable data to complement existing knowledge but, above all, to identify and determine previously unknown hazards. Recently, attention has been paid to the migration of xenobiotics from the surfaces of various everyday objects and the resulting impacts on human health. Since children are among those most vulnerable to health consequences, one of the main subjects of interest…
Comparison of region of interest segmentation methods for video-based heart rate measurements
2018
International audience; Conventional contact photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors are not suitable in situations of skin damage or when unconstrained movement is required. As a consequence, remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) has recently emerged because it provides remote physiological measurements without expensive hardware and improves comfort for long-term monitoring. RPPG estimation methods use the spatially averaged RGB values of pixels in a Region Of Interest (ROI) to generate a temporal RGB signal. The selection of ROI is a critical first step to obtain reliable pulse signals and must contain as many skin pixels as possible with a low percentage of non-skin pixels. In this paper, we ex…
Quality-related variables at hepatological websites
2004
Abstract Background. The amount of hepatology-related information available on the Internet has substantially increased, but little is known about the characteristics and quality of the websites. Aim. The aim of this study was to describe analytically and evaluate critically the information concerning three diseases of hepatological interest: chronic hepatitis, hemochromatosis and Caroli’s disease. Methods. In accordance with a validated method, the three search terms were entered into four English language search engines and the first five links of each were considered (a total of 60 sites). The characteristics of the websites were described and their quality was evaluated by three indepen…
Beerkan Estimation of Soil Transfer parameters (BEST) across soils and scales
2019
Abstract Theories and models used in soil hydrological sciences rely on the knowledge of the spatially and temporally variable soil hydraulic properties, i.e. the water retention and hydraulic conductivity curves. Obtaining reliable experimental information on these curves for an area of interest is not easy and it still remains a challenge for soil scientists. In 2006, a simple and physically based methodology was proposed to completely characterize the soil using a single ring infiltration experiment in the field and determination of soil particle size distribution, initial and final soil water content and dry soil bulk density. This methodology, named BEST – Beerkan Estimation of Soil Tr…
Considerations Regarding the Analysis and Interpretation of Traumatic Lesional Mechanisms in Road Accidents
2021
According to statistics, road transportation is the most dangerous means of transportation and also the costliest in terms of human lives and material damage. The increase of road safety is a priority goal of the European Commission and an area of high interest for Romania, which is unfortunately placed very high in the hierarchy of countries with a high number of deaths resulting from road accidents. This study presents the mechanisms of the generation of traumatic injuries and also analyses the manner of interpreting these mechanisms in the case of road accidents, both from the perspective of law enforcement and from the perspective of specialists in road transportation, who analyse and i…
Fascist Unionization and the Professionalization of Midwives in Italy: A Sicilian Case Study
1994
In the 19th century, Italian midwives (then called levatrice) began to organize in an attempt to resist encroachments being made on their practice by obstetricians. Licensed midwives formed professional societies, organized national congresses, and published journals. By the fascist period (1922–43), with the foundation of the first national state-sanctioned union and the institution of an obligatory professional register (Albo), midwifery achieved the status of a recognized profession. The professionalizing practices of midwives, however, combined with a new state interest in their activities and a broader role for the medical profession in defining the proper place of midwives, held Itali…
Electrochemical formation of N,N′-diarylhydrazines by dehydrogenative N–N homocoupling reaction
2020
Hydrazines represent a class of compounds of high interest due to their applicability as versatile starting materials in many important transformations. Herein, we report a synthetic approach to hydrazine derivatives using commercially available anilines and an anodic dehydrogenative N-N coupling reaction as the key step.
Current trends on the determination of organic UV filters in environmental water samples based on microextraction techniques – A review
2018
UV filters are a group of cosmetic ingredients commonly used in a wide variety of cosmetic products to protect users from UV solar radiation. They belong to different chemical families, such as benzophenones, p-aminobenzoates, salicylates, cinnamates, benzotriazoles, benzimidazoles, camphor derivatives, triazines, etc. These cosmetic ingredients are considered as emerging contaminants since they easily reach the aquatic environment, where they are accumulated causing harmful effects in the flora and fauna despite being present at the ng L-1 level. Therefore, the development of sensitive and selective analytical methods for their environmental surveillance monitoring is of high interest. In …
