Declaration and Handling of Conflicts of Interest in Guidelines
2015
Clinical guidelines are developed in order to support physicians and patients in specific clinical situations when decisions concerning diagnosis and treatment are made. Recommendations provided in guidelines are based on the findings of clinical studies and on expert opinion. Identical study findings may be evaluated differently depending on whether or not guideline authors have conflicts of interest (1). A conflict of interest is defined as a circumstance that gives rise to a risk that professional judgement or actions concerning a primary interest may be inappropriately influenced by a secondary interest (2, 3). A conflict of interest is therefore a state of affairs, not a biased evaluat…
Holes in the Dike: The Global Savings Glut, U.S. House Prices and the Long Shadow of Banking Deregulation
2016
We explore empirically how capital inflows into the US and financial deregulation within the United States interacted in driving the run-up (and subsequent decline) in US housing prices over the period 1990-2010. To obtain an ex ante measure of financial liberalization, we focus on the history of interstate-banking deregulation during the 1980s, i.e. prior to the large net capital inflows into the US from China and other emerging economies. Our results suggest a long shadow of deregulation: in states that opened their banking markets to out-of-state banks earlier, house prices were more sensitive to capital inflows. We provide evidence that global imbalances were a major positive funding sh…
Young Men in Digital Culture: A New Form of Informal Learning?
2012
In this chapter, the interest lies in the role of the media in young people’s and young adults’ everyday life. Of special interest is the idea of virtual environments as a learning environment, because the aspects of media, virtual realities and learning are socially important and scientifically challenging. In the analysis, three main areas are taken into consideration: First, the discussion on new learning models; second, the progress of information technology; and third, the gap between the styles of learning inside and outside the school. The study focused on young men who practically live in the online world, either playing or talking with each other via online gaming and social portal…
5PSQ-106 Analysis of the medication incident reports at the university children’s hospital
2018
Background Currently no national reporting system is in place in the country that would collect reports on patient safety incidents (PSI). Such a system was introduced in the Children’s Hospital in 2013. ‘Reporting’ has very negative, meaning in society in general, because of the country’s political past. Purpose To analyse trends in reporting of PSI focusing on medication incidents reports (MIRs). Material and methods A retrospective analysis from 1 January to 31 December 2016. Patient safety team members automatically receive alerts to emails when MIRs are submitted to the hospital intranet and have access to these MIRs and patients’ medical records if more detailed information is needed.…
Legal Scholars Communities and Academic Conferences
2012
Many scientific communities – including those devoted to the study of law – regularly organize academic conferences to which all members of the considered community are called to attend. After describing the goals of these conferences, their types, their social costs and the positive externalities they may produce, this paper analyzes which type of academic conference could be most appropriate in order to maximize social welfare, which the practices of the Spanish legal scholars in this respect are and why such practices do not always seem to be the best ones from a public interest point of view.
INFORMATION CHANNELS INFLUENCING THE HOUSEHOLDS’ DECISION OF HOME LOAN PROVIDERS
2012
With rapid growing of competitiveness in the Latvian commercial banking, and resemblance of services offered by banks, it has become significantly important that banks detect the information sources influencing the customer choice of banks of financial products. The relevant literature indicates that a great deal of research effort has been expended to investigate bank selection criteria for broad categories of customers. One promising segment, which, arguably, has not been given enough attention, is the households group. Home loans products make the markets that had the huge increase before crisis. The great fall of interest rates along with the offering of new, more flexible and attractiv…
Thirty Years of Epidemiological Studies of Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors in Latvia: Why are they Needed?
2020
Abstract The present review is designed to provide insight into population-based investigations of cardiovascular risk factors in Latvia. Most of them represent urban, rural and mixed populations. The results are age-standardised using the European Standard Population. All of the studies confirm a high prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors with wide differences across the studies. The differences are not consistent or regular and some of the underlying reasons are discussed. Analysis of the previous studies justifies the need for a nationwide cross-sectional epidemiological study, which in a small country can be carried out in compliance with all the requirements for a population-based …
Development of a European consensus from dentists, dental hygienists and physicians on a standard for oral health care in care-dependent older people…
2020
ObjectivesThis study aimed to obtain a consensus on oral health policy, access to dental care, oral hygiene measures and training levels.BackgroundPoor oral health is widespread in care-dependent older people, but no consensus for a minimum standard of oral health care exists yet.MethodsThe e-Delphi approach was applied to a selected panel of interdisciplinary experts. Data analysis was based on three measurements: (a) ≥70% of experts’ opinion fall into category “agree or strongly agree,” (b) median score on the 5-point Likert scale ≥4, (c) interquartile range ≤1.ResultsA total of 31 experts from 17 European countries participated in this survey. Agreement was achieved for a compulsory dent…
Podział wierzycieli na kategorie interesów w układzie częściowym
2018
Peptide-Controlled Assembly of Macroscopic Calcium Oxalate Nanosheets
2019
The fabrication of two-dimensional (2D) biomineral nanosheets is of high interest owing to their promise for applications in electronics, filtration, catalysis, and chemical sensing. Using a facile approach inspired by biomineralization in nature, we fabricate laterally macroscopic calcium oxalate nanosheets using β-folded peptides. The template peptides are composed of repetitive glutamic acid and leucine amino acids, self-organized at the air-water interface. Surface-specific sum frequency generation spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the formation of oxalate nanosheets relies on the peptide-Ca 2+ ion interaction at the interface, which not only restructures the …
