Merit, Competition, Distinction
2018
The article presents a critique of competition by introducing a concept called 'distinction'. Competition is thought to work as a guarantee of the fairness of meritocratic procedures (merit-based recruiting in the job market or e.g. entrance examinations). However, fairness created by competition is, even at its best, only relative. This critique is then used a part of a larger critique of the role of merit in society.
The Transcallosal Anterior Interfoniceal Approach: A Microsurgical Anatomy Study
2014
Objectives: A plethora of surgical strategies have been described to reach deeply lesions situated within the third ventricle, including the Rosenfeld or anterior transcallosal interfoniceal approach (TAIF). Firstly, introduced in 2001, it consists of a small callosotomy followed by the midline transseptal dissection of fornices to enter the roof of the third ventricle. The aim of this microsurgical anatomy study is to describe and show each stage of the surgical procedure, focusing on the possible trajectories to anatomic landmarks. Participants: A total of twenty adult cadaveric specimens were used in this study. Using x3 to x40 magnifications the surgical dissection was carried out in a …
Patterns of word reading skill, interest and self-concept of ability
2016
AbstractThe majority of previous research on academic skills, self-concept of ability and interest has deployed the variable-oriented approach and focused on self-concept, or ability, or interest only. This study examined the patterns and dynamics of pattern change in Finnish children’s word reading skill, self-concept of ability and interest from kindergarten to Grade 2. Six groups of children were identified by using the I-states as objects analysis (ISOA) procedure: (a) low skills, negative self-concept but high interest; (b) high skills but low interest; (c) average; (d) high skills, positive self-concept and high interest; (e) low skills, negative self-concept and low interest; and (f)…
La disciplina della libertà personale
2015
The Euro and Monetary Policy Transparency
2002
This paper focuses on a possible explanation for the weakness of the euro, namely the lack of transparency of the European Central Bank's (ECB) monetary policy. In order to obtain a time-varying measure of monetary policy uncertainty in both the U.S. and Euroland, we estimate a Stochastic Volatility model using policy-adjusted short-term interest rates. We also analyze directly the impact of higher uncertainty on the euro-dollar exchange rate. The empirical findings are in line with those of other studies, and show that the U.S. Fed is more transparent than the ECB. This results in higher volatility of European interest rates, capital outflows, and a weaker euro vis-a-vis the U.S. dollar.
CHANGES IN THE EUROPEAN CENTRAL BANK (ECB) APPROACHES IN MATTERS OF MONETARY POLICY AFTER THE OUTBREAK OF THE INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL CRISIS
2012
The problem of monetary policy is a current one, given the fact that now, through this component of the economic policy, the monetary authority of each state tries to solve the problems considered essential for each economy separately. Through this article I have tried to capture the major changes regarding the implementation of the ECB's monetary policy before and after the outbreak of the international financial crisis. Following the analysis I have shown that the monetary policy of the ECB is not a constant one in its actions and instruments used but it is adapted to a conjuncture context through which the European economy is passing through. Therefore, in this paper I have broadly shown…
New Modalities in Knee Osteoarthritis Treatment Using Autologous Bone Marrow-Derived Mononuclear Cells
2018
Abstract The clinical effects on knee osteoarthritis (OA) symptoms and tissue structure were evaluated after bone marrow-derived mononuclear cell intraarticular injection. A group of 32 patients with 34 knee joints in stage II–III osteoarthritis were treated by intraarticular injection of mononuclear cell suspension. Clinical results were obtained by KOOS (Knee Osteoarthritis Outcome Score) and KSS (Knee Society Score) scores during a 12 months follow-up period. Radiological evaluation was performed using magnetic resonance imaging. A comparison with a control group of 28 patients treated with routinely used three hyaluronic acid intra-articular injections was made. No adverse effects were …

Grit and self-discipline as predictors of effort and academic attainment
2019
Background: Beyond ability, traits related to perseverance, such as grit and self‐discipline, are associated with adaptive educational outcomes. Few studies have examined the independent effects of these traits on outcomes and the mechanisms involved. - Aims: This study estimated parameters of a process model in which grit‐perseverance of effort (grit‐effort) and consistency of interest (grit‐interest) dimensions and self‐discipline were independent predictors of students’ science grades. The effect of the grit‐effort on grades was expected to be mediated by students’ self‐reported effort on optional out‐of‐school science learning activities. - Sample: Secondary school students (N = 110) ag…
