Indexing epistemic incongruence: uy as a formal sign of disagreement in agreement sequences in Spanish

Abstract This study explores epistemic incongruence in Spanish by focusing on the particle uy in Iberian Spanish. It is claimed that this interjection has a basic change-of-state meaning and that it is commonly used to stress disagreement. Despite its general association to disagreement, the particle can be used in agreeing responses, where it also treats the previous turn as problematic. In this sequential environment, however, it is not the content of the previous turn but rather the underlying assumptions (the basic epistemic configuration of an assertion-answer adjacency pair) that are challenged by the second speaker. Abstract The present paper illustrates the fuzzy limits between modality markers and discourse markers by analysing the different uses based on the word clar ‘clear’ in oral Catalan. Clar is lexically described as an adjective, but it has developed different functions in various syntactic and pragmatic contexts. In the adverbial and the interjective uses, (es) clar (que) ‘it is clear that’ is a modality marker indicating certainty and shared knowledge. As a conjunction, clar que has developed a concessive meaning (‘but, nevertheless’). Interjections and Pragmatic Errors in Dubbing

This paper consists of an analysis of the expressive secondary interjections found in the film Four Weddings and a Funeral and their equivalents in the Spanish and Catalan dubbed versions. The contrastive analysis of the interjections in the original English version compared with the Spanish and the Catalan dubbed versions shows that the strategies followed by the translators are different: literal translation is far more frequent in Spanish than in Catalan. Literal translation often implies an error that is pragmatic in nature since it derives from the misunderstanding of the pragmatic meaning that the interjection conveys.

The collected data consist of words (200 forms), which were qualified as an interjecion in the National Corpus of Polish and in the Uniwersalny słownik języka polskiego. The first part provides a short introduction to the subject matter related to interjections and includes a short summary of the views and opinions concerning their semantic structure. Resumen: La animación aparece cada vez más en producciones sobre sucesos relacionados con la memoria. Nuestro objetivo es ana lizar las obras que incorporan escenas animadas para representar la dictadura chilena y profundizar en la convergencia entre animación, documental y memoria. Desde una perspectiva cualitativa, combi namos el análisis de las animaciones con entrevistas a sus directores.
