Multitasking in Driving as Optimal Adaptation Under Uncertainty

2021

Objective The objective was to better understand how people adapt multitasking behavior when circumstances in driving change and how safe versus unsafe behaviors emerge. Background Multitasking strategies in driving adapt to changes in the task environment, but the cognitive mechanisms of this adaptation are not well known. Missing is a unifying account to explain the joint contribution of task constraints, goals, cognitive capabilities, and beliefs about the driving environment. Method We model the driver’s decision to deploy visual attention as a stochastic sequential decision-making problem and propose hierarchical reinforcement learning as a computationally tractable solution to it. The…

Modeling visual sampling on in-car displays: The challenge of predicting safety-critical lapses of control

2015

In this article, we study how drivers interact with in-car interfaces, particularly by focusing on understanding driver in-car glance behavior when multitasking while driving. The work focuses on using an in-car touch screen to find a target item from a large number of unordered visual items spread across multiple screens. We first describe a cognitive model that aims to represent a driver?s visual sampling strategy when interacting with an in-car display. The proposed strategy assumes that drivers are aware of the passage of time during the search task; they try to adjust their glances at the display to a time limit, after which they switch back to the driving task; and they adjust their t…

A comparison of different DC-DC converters for energy storage management in nearly-Zero Energy Buildings

2020

In the recent years, there has been a notable interest towards renewable sources, energy saving and efficiency optimization, in order to reduce the damages brought by fine dust and greenhouse gases in terms of safety, health and environmental protection. In the building sector renewable sources and energy efficiency optimization are leading to a large scale employment of nearly-Zero Energy Buildings (n-ZEBs), meaning that the balance between produced and required energy is negligible. For a proper n-ZEB implementation, a power system architecture has to be accurately designed, according to the existing renewable sources, loads and storage systems. In this paper, an investigation on differen…

Performance Enhancement of Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS) with Receive Diversity

2007

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the effect of receive diversity on multimedia broadcast multicast service (MBMS) performance in wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) networks. In addition to time diversity provided by long interleaving and receive diversity provided by multiple receive antennas, 3GPP release 6 specifications for MBMS introduce two macro diversity schemes: soft and selective combining. Diversity techniques are introduced in order to improve the MBMS performance. Improvements help especially the cell edge MBMS users who suffer most from the fading channel conditions. As receive diversity is one of the most efficient diversity techniques this paper examines the s…

An improved method for estimating the frequency correlation function

2012

For time-invariant frequency-selective channels, the transfer function is a superposition of waves having different propagation delays and path gains. In order to estimate the frequency correlation function (FCF) of such channels, the frequency averaging technique can be utilized. The obtained FCF can be expressed as a sum of auto-terms (ATs) and cross-terms (CTs). The ATs are caused by the autocorrelation of individual path components. The CTs are due to the cross-correlation of different path components. These CTs have no physical meaning and leads to an estimation error. We propose a new estimation method aiming to improve the estimation accuracy of the FCF of a band-limited transfer fun…

A Demonstrator for a new Axial PET Concept

2008

In PET imaging, improving sensitivity while maintaining very good spatial resolution is crucial. To achieve this goal, we propose a novel concept of PET scanner, with axially arranged crystals, providing a high sensitivity and a 3D reconstruction of the gamma interaction point. The trans-axial coordinate is given by the crystal hit, while the z coordinate is reconstructed by the weighted distribution of light escaping the crystal and entering into an array of Wave Length Shifting (WLS) strips interleaving the crystal layers. This novel configuration allows full identification of Compton interactions in the crystals that can be included in image reconstruction thus enhancing the sensitivity.…

On the analysis of a new Markov chain which has applications in AI and machine learning

2011

Accepted version of an article from the conference: 2011 24th Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering. Published version available from IEEE: http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/CCECE.2011.6030727 In this paper, we consider the analysis of a fascinating Random Walk (RW) that contains interleaving random steps and random "jumps". The characterizing aspect of such a chain is that every step is paired with its counterpart random jump. RWs of this sort have applications in testing of entities, where the entity is never allowed to make more than a pre-specified number of consecutive failures. This paper contains the analysis of the chain, some fascinating limiting properties, and some i…

Design and Modeling of an Interleaving Boost Converter with Quasi-Saturated Inductors for Electric Vehicles

2020

This paper is focused on the analysis and modeling of DC-DC boost converters in interleaving configuration exploiting inductors in the quasi-saturation region. The converter is designed to optimize the power density by minimizing the size of the inductors. A simulation study for electric vehicle applications is conducted analyzing the effects of duty cycle and temperature variation on the ripple of the input current giving, moreover, information on the performances and dynamics of the converter for further implementation and optimizations.
