Influence of nanoporous structure on mechanical strength of aluminium and aluminium alloy adhesive structural joints

2006

The influence of surface treatments on the mechanical strength of adhesive joints was investigated. The attention was focused on AA2024 alloy because it is extensively used in both the automotive and aerospace industries. Adhesive joints fabricated with pure aluminium were also investigated in order to evidence possible differences in the surface features after identical treatments. Before joining with a commercial epoxy adhesive, metal substrates were subjected to different kinds of treatment and the surfaces were characterized by SEM analysis. The formation of a microporous surface in the AA2024 alloy, upon etching and anodizing, is discussed on the basis of the role of the intermetallic …

Effect of Aeration on the Microelectrochemical Characterization of Al[sub 2]Cu Intermetallic Phases

2009

Local probing of the galvanic coupling between micrometer-sized Al 2 Cu phases and the surrounding aluminum-based matrix of a specially heat-treated 2011 alloy is investigated using a microcapillary electrochemical cell. The aging of an isolated Al 2 Cu particle, i.e., selective dissolution of aluminum, is controlled by the aeration condition at the tip of the capillary due to the nature of the silicon membrane used as a gasket. The local electrochemical behavior of an isolated particle after aging confirms the mass transport control of the oxygen reduction on the galvanic coupling of the particle with the surrounding matrix.

Magnetic Heusler Compounds

2013

Abstract Heusler compounds are a remarkable class of intermetallic materials with 1:1:1 (often called Half-Heusler) or 2:1:1 composition comprising more than 1500 members. New properties and potential fields of applications emerge constantly; the prediction of topological insulators is the most recent example. Surprisingly, the properties of many Heusler compounds can easily be predicted by the valence electron count or within a rigid band approach. The wide range of the multifunctional properties of Heusler compounds is reflected in extraordinary magnetooptical, magnetoelectronic, and magnetocaloric properties. Co 2 -Heusler compounds are predicted and proven half-metallic ferromagnets sho…

A neutron scattering study of the magnetic properties of PrSn3

1988

The intermetallic compound PrSn3 has been studied by elastic and inelastic neutron scattering. The paramagnetic phase shows overdamped crystal field excitations and an anisotropic distribution of the diffuse magnetic intensity. The dispersion relation of the excitations of the antiferromagnetic phase has been determined. The results are analyzed in terms of an anisotropic exchange coupling.

Electronic, structural, and magnetic properties of the half-metallic ferromagnetic quaternary Heusler compounds CoFeMnZ(Z=Al, Ga, Si, Ge)

2011

The quaternary intermetallic Heusler compounds CoFeMn$Z$ ($Z=\text{Al}$, Ga, Si, or Ge) with $1:1:1:1$ stoichiometry were predicted to exhibit half-metallic ferromagnetism by ab initio electronic structure calculations. The compounds were synthesized using an arc-melting technique and the crystal structures were analyzed using x-ray powder diffraction. The electronic properties were investigated using hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The low-temperature magnetic moments, as determined from magnetization measurements, follow the Slater-Pauling rule, confirming the proposed high spin polarizations. All compounds have high Curie temperatures, allowing for applications at room temperature…

Thermoelectric properties of spark plasma sintered composites based on TiNiSn half-Heusler alloys

2011

Half-Heusler (HH) and especially TiNiSn-based alloys have shown high potential as thermoelectric (TE) materials for power generation applications. The reported transport properties show, however, a significant spread of results, due mainly to the difficulty in fabricating single-phase HH samples in these multicomponent and multiphased systems. In particular, little attention has been paid to the influence of the various minority phases on the TE performance of these compounds. A clear understanding of these issues is mandatory for the design of improved and stable TE HH-based composites. This study examines the structural and compositional influence of the residual metallic (Sn) and interme…

Friction stir welding of dissimilar aluminium– magnesium joints: Sheet mutual position effects

2015

Friction stir welding (FSW) is a solid state welding process used to weld difficult to be welded or unweldable materials as aluminium alloys. In the last years, other materials have been successfully tested as magnesium, titanium and nickel based alloys. Dissimilar joints can be obtained by FSW, but issues arise concerning the correct choice of the process parameters. In the paper, the results of an experimental and numerical campaign aimed to produce dissimilar AZ31-AA6016-T6 butt joints are presented. The effect of sheet mutual position and main process parameters was investigated. It was found that intermetallics are the main cause of the poor quality of the joints. Sound joints can be p…

The use of microcapillary techniques to study the corrosion resistance of AZ91 magnesium alloy at the microscale

2011

Abstract The AZ91 alloy is composed of Mg 17 (Al, Zn) 12 precipitates, an eutectic phase around these precipitates, AlMn intermetallic particles and an α-Mg solid solution (matrix). The corrosion behaviour of AZ91 was investigated at the microscale by means of the electrochemical microcell technique, which uses extremely small capillaries (diameters between 5 and 10 μm). Experiments were conducted in 0.1 M NaClO 4 at 25 °C. The β-Mg 17 (Al, Zn) 12 precipitates were found to have the highest corrosion resistance, whereas the eutectic phase was very active (pitting potential of approximately −1400 mV vs. Ag/AgCl). The α-Mg solid solution displayed better corrosion resistance than the eutectic…

Effects of ball-milling on the hydrogen sorption properties of LaNi5

2009

Abstract Pressure–composition isotherms of LaNi 5 alloys were studied as function of ball-milling time. Results indicate that ball-milling convert a part of the LaNi 5 to a non-absorbing state—a state which does not absorb hydrogen under conditions where un-milled LaNi 5 powders absorb and transform to LaNi 5 H 6 , in addition to particle size reduction and creation of defects. The non-absorbing fraction in the milled sample is found to grow with increase in the ball-milling time. The resistance to the hydride formation of the long-time ball-milled LaNi 5 samples is found to continue even after a 1-h high vacuum annealing at around 1000 K. This indicates that the hydrogen-absorption-resist-…

Investigations of the formation mechanism of nanostructured NbAl3 via MASHS reaction

2002

Abstract The nanostructured NbAl3 intermetallic compound was synthesized using the mechanically-activated self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (MASHS) technique. This process results from the combination of two steps: a short duration ball-milling of a pure elemental Nb+3Al powder mixture followed by a self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) reaction induced by the Nb+3Al reaction exothermicity. Synchrotron time-resolved XRD coupled with a 2D infrared camera were used to investigate the structural and thermal evolutions during the SHS reaction, and to study in situ the mechanism of NbAl3 formation. The influence of the incoming heat flux and the mechanical activation effect…
