Structural, magnetic and calorimetric studies of a crystalline phase of the spin crossover compound [Fe(tzpy)2(NCSe)2]

The compound [Fe(tzpy)2(NCSe)2] (tzpy = 3-(2-pyridyl)-[1,2,3]triazolo[1,5-a]pyridine)) has been synthesized and its crystal structure, magnetic behavior and calorimetric properties investigated. Samples constituted of single crystals of [Fe(tzpy)2(NCSe) 2] display a relatively cooperative spin-state change centered at T1/2 ¿ 251.7 K with a hysteresis loop 3.5 K wide. The average enthalpy (¿H) and entropy (¿S) changes upon the spin crossover behavior (SCO) obtained from DSC measurements are 11.1 ± 0.4 kJ mol -1 and 44.5 ± 3 J K-1 mol-1, respectively. Low-temperature methyl group dynamics of hexamethylbenzene in crystalline and glassy matrices as studied by 2H NMR

Abstract 2 H NMR spectra of hexamethylbenzene (HMB) in protonated crystalline and amorphous matrices at low temperatures are presented. All spectra reveal lineshape changes which can be attributed to methyl group tunnelling. Compared to neat HMB, a drastic increase of the tunnelling frequency is found for all systems. This indicates that the hindering potential originates predominantly from intermolecular forces. We studied the temperature dependence of these spectra and the spin-lattice relaxation in order to exclude a distribution of motional correlation times describing a thermally activated process. In addition, we find a distortion of the methyl tetrahedron.
Designing Solid Solutions of Enantiomers: Lack of Enantioselectivity of Chiral Naphthalimide Derivatives in the Solid State

The enantiomers of a previously reported naphthalimide derivative are shown in this study to form a solid solution; furthermore, on the basis of the knowledge of solid solution structural aspects other naphthalimide derivatives have been synthesized and shown to lack the enantioselectivity in the solid state. The structural origin of solid solution formation is the same as observed in most of the cases in the literaturequasi-centrosymmetric structures form at nonracemic compositions where the most abundant enantiomer adjusts its conformation to mimic the absent one. The crystal structure of 2,6,6,10-tetrabenzyl-2,10-diaza-6-azonia[11]paracyclophane bromide reveals several intermolecular aromatic edge-to-face interactions which are important in the three-dimensional growing of the crystalline structure. Molecular dynamics and semiempirical studies indicate that the conformer found in the crystal is not the most stable in solution confirming the important role that edge-to-face interactions play in the structural arrangement found in the solid state.

The synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of self-assembling calix[4]arene based capsules 1a.1a and 1b.1b are described. These compounds feature four urea substituents at the upper rims and four secondary amide fragments at the lower rims that can participate in inter- and intramolecular hydrogen bonding in apolar solution. Communication between the calixarene rims in 1a, b influences the self-assembled cavity's size and shape. In this study, ten new dibenzyldimethyl/ethyl ammonium chloridopalladate(II) compounds with five different cations and two anions have been synthesized and a simple method for a synthesis, in which hydrochloric acid solutions are used, has been described. Two novel ReIV compounds of formulas [HBTA]2[ReIVBr6] (1) and [HMEBTA]2[ReIVBr6] (2) [BTA = 1H-benzotriazole and MEBTA = 1-(methoxymethyl)-1H-benzotriazole] have been synthesized and magneto-structurally characterized. 1 and 2 crystallize in the triclinic system with space group P1̅. In both compounds, the rhenium ion is six-coordinate, bonded to six bromo ligands in a regular octahedral geometry. Abstract In order to develop systems with controlled energy or charge transfer across molecular dimensions it is highly desirable to build two-dimensional crystals of functional dye molecules: they can be addressed from the third dimension and the lateral intermolecular interactions can be well characterized due to a fixed and defined geometry. In an effort to study these possibilities we prepared crystals of different, negatively charged cyanine dyes, formed after adsorption from a water subphase to a positively charged monolayer.
