Dibenzoquinquethiophene- and Dibenzosexithiophene-Based Hole-Transporting Materials for Perovskite Solar Cells
2018
Fused oligothiophene-based π-conjugated organic derivatives have been widely used in electronic devices. In particular, two-dimensional (2D) heteroarenes offer the possibility of broadening the scope by extending the π-conjugated framework, which endows enhanced charge transport properties due to the potential intermolecular π–π stacking. Here, the synthesis and characterization of two new small-molecule hole-transporting materials (HTMs) for perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are reported. The newly custom-made compounds are based on dibenzoquinquethiophene (DBQT) and dibenzosexithiophene (DBST) cores, which are covalently linked to triphenylamine moieties to successfully afford the four-armed …

AbstractMaterials that demonstrate long-range magnetic order are synonymous with information storage and the electronics industry, with the phenomenon commonly associated with metals, metal alloys or metal oxides and sulfides. A lesser known family of magnetically ordered complexes are the monometallic compounds of highly anisotropic d-block transition metals; the ‘transformation’ from isolated zero-dimensional molecule to ordered, spin-canted, three-dimensional lattice being the result of through-space interactions arising from the combination of large magnetic anisotropy and spin-delocalization from metal to ligand which induces important intermolecular contacts. Here we report the effect…
Series of charge transfer complexes obtained as crystals in a confined environment
2021
A series of charge transfer complexes (CTCs) were successfully formed by solvent free processing techniques, using the 1,2,4,5-tetracyano benzene (TCNB) as πA molecule and a series of p-dihydroquinones (H2Qs) as πD counterparts. Additionally to the classical co-evaporation techniques, we obtained CTCs in less than an hour, in a very simple confined environment, between two 100 μm – spaced glass plates. A systematical study by Raman spectroscopy on crystals highlighted the CTCs formation. Moreover, three new crystalline structures were obtained, namely TCNB-H2Q that crystallizes in columns connected to each other by H-bonds, while with the methoxy- and dimethoxy-H2Qs the CTC forms crystals w…
Substrate templating upon self-assembly of hydrogen-bonded molecular networks on an insulating surface.
2012
M olecular self-assembly on insulating surfaces, despite being highly relvant to many applications, generally suffers from the weak molecule–surface interactions present on dielectric surfaces, especially when benchmarked against metallic substrates. Therefore, to fully exploit the potential of molecular self-assembly, increasing the infl uence of the substrate constitutes an essential prerequisite. Upon deposition of terephthalic acid and trimesic acid onto the natural cleavage plane of calcite, extended hydrogen-bonded networks are formed, which wet the substrate. The observed structural complexity matches the variety realized on metal surfaces. A detailed analysis of the molecular struct…
Twist-Elasticity-Controlled Crystal Emission in Highly Luminescent Polymorphs of Cyano-Substituted Distyrylbenzene (βDCS)
2017
The occurrence of polymorphs in crystals of luminescent π-conjugated organic materials is an intriguing matter, particularly because polymorphs can give rise to widely different broadband and amplified emission properties. Here, a new, highly luminescent polymorph of cyano-substituted distyrylbenzene, being a prominent example of “twist elasticity”—the ability of a molecule to react to external constraints with substantial changes in the torsional coordinates, is investigated. The twist elasticity concept is fully explored here through molecular modeling by comparison of the new polymorph with two known ones exhibiting largely different intra- and intermolecular coordinates. In a second ste…
Loose crystals engineered by mismatched halogen bonds in hexachloroethane
2018
Distortions of the directional requirements in halogen⋯halogen contacts between hexachloroethane (HCE), C2Cl6, molecules lead to a loose crystal under ambient conditions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction shows that the orthorhombic HCE phase of space group Pnma, with the molecules in the staggered conformation, extends at least from 85 to 305 K and from 0.1 MPa to 5.42 GPa. At ambient pressure, all intermolecular distances are longer than the sum of van der Waals radii, reached only at the pressure of ca. 1.2 GPa.
Growth, single crystal investigation, hirshfeld surface analysis, DFT studies, molecular docking, physico-chemical characterization and, in vitro, an…

Abstract Interaction of the diphosphoric acid (H4P2O7) and organic ligand (3.4-dimethylaniline) with transition metal ions, cobalt (II) chloride leads to the formation of novel stable Co(II)-diphosphate cluster with empirical formula (C8H12N)2[Co(H2P2O7)2(H2O)2].2H2O. The structure of the synthesized material was confirmed by single crystal XRD at 120 K. The crystal was plate and crystallized in the triclinic P 1 ¯ space group with a = 7.5340(4) A, b = 7.5445(4) A, c = 13.6896(8) A, α = 84.215(5)°, β = 76.038(5)°, γ = 74.284(5)°, V = 726.38(7) A3 and Z = 1. Full-matrix least-squares refinement converged at R = 0.035 and Rw = 0.088 for 3636 independent observed reflectio…
A deep-blue emitting charged bis-cyclometallated iridium(iii) complex for light-emitting electrochemical cells
2013
We report here a new cationic bis-cyclometallated iridium(III) complex, 1, with deep-blue emission at 440 nm and its use in Light-emitting Electrochemical Cells (LECs). The design is based on the 2′,6′-difluoro-2,3′-bipyridine skeleton as the cyclometallating ligand and a bis-imidazolium carbene-type ancillary ligand. Furthermore, bulky tert-butyl substituents are used to limit the intermolecular interactions. LECs have been driven both at constant voltage (6 V) and constant current (2.5 mA cm−2). The performances are significantly improved with the latter method, resulting overall in one of the best reported greenish-blue LECs having fast response (17 s), light intensity over 100 cd m−2 an…
Chain Conformations and Phase Behavior in Confined Polymer Blends
2007
We investigate the chain conformations and phase separation in binary polymer blends. Using large scale semi-grandcanonical Monte Carlo simulations and finite size scaling, we investigate the molecular extension and the intermolecular paircorrelation function in thin films with hard, non-preferentially adsorbing surfaces. The interplay between chain conformations, demixing and the validity of mean field theory is investigated for a large variation of chain lengths 16 ≤ N ≤ 512. Three regimes of film thickness D can be distinguished: (i) For film thicknesses much larger than the unperturbed chain extension R e, bulk behavior is observed, i.e., the critical temperature of demixing T c increas…
Prediction of Solid Solution Formation among Chemically Similar Molecules Using Calculation of Lattice and Intermolecular Interaction Energy
2020
Several 2-substituted 4-nitrobenzoic acid (NBA) derivatives such as 2-chloro-4-nitrobenzoic acid (2C4NBA), 2-methyl-4-nitrobenzoic acid (2CH34NBA) and 2-hydroxy-4-nitrobenzoic acid (2OH4NBA) were selected as model compounds because of their availability and chemically similar structures, in which the different group/atom (R) does not significantly affect the dominant intermolecular interactions – hydrogen bonds formed by the carboxylic group [1]. Quantum chemical calculations of lattice and intermolecular interaction energy were carried out to identify possible factors, which could be, used in prediction of the formation of solid solutions (SS) in binary systems of chemically similar molecu…
