Ternary Polymer Solutions with Hydrogen Bonds, 2

2007

Experimental ternary phase diagrams for ternary systems CHL/PS-MAA/PVPy with diverse MAA contents have been determined by GPC. The presence of MAA in the copolymers gives rise to specific interactions, by hydrogen bond formation between both polymeric components, so strong that the isotherm for the system with the highest MAA content so far studied, CHL/PS-MAA(8%)/PVPy, is representative of a complex coacervation situation. By applying the theoretical background deduced by coupling the Flory-Huggins lattice model to the AET developed for ternary polymeric systems SPP with specific intermolecular interactions (via hydrogen bonds), free energy surfaces for the CHL/PS-MAA/PVPy systems are cons…

Inter- and intramolecular non-covalent interactions in 1-methylimidazole-2-carbaldehyde complexes of copper, silver, and gold

2014

Abstract Three new imidazole compounds, [CuBr2(mimc)2] (1), [Ag(mimc)2][CF3SO3] (2), and [AuCl3(mimc)] (3) (mimc = 1-methylimidazole-2-carbaldehyde), have been synthesized, structurally characterized, and further analyzed using the QTAIM analysis. The compounds exhibit self-assembled 3D networks arising from intermolecular non-covalent interactions such as metallophilic interactions, metal-π contacts, halogens–halogen interactions, and hydrogen bonds. These weak interactions have a strong impact on the coordination sphere of the metal atoms and on the packing of compounds 1, 2, and 3.

ChemInform Abstract: Gold(I)-Catalyzed Intermolecular Cycloaddition of Allenamides with α,β-Unsaturated Hydrazones: Efficient Access to Highly Substi…

2015

α,β-Unsaturated N,N-dialkyl hydrazones undergo a mild [2 + 2] cycloaddition to allenamides when treated with a suitable gold catalyst. The method, which represents the first application of N,N-dialkyl hydrazones in gold catalysis, is compatible with a wide variety of substituents at the alkenyl moiety of the hydrazone component, proceeds with excellent levels of regio- and diastereoselectivity, and provides densely substituted cyclobutanes with good to excellent yields.

Approaching an experimental electron density model of the biologically active trans ‐epoxysuccinyl amide group—Substituent effects vs. crystal packing

2017

The trans-epoxysuccinyl amide group as a biologically active moiety in cysteine protease inhibitors such as loxistatin acid E64c has been used as a benchmark system for theoretical studies of environmental effects on the electron density of small active ingredients in relation to their biological activity. Here, the synthesis and the electronic properties of the smallest possible active site model compound are reported to close the gap between the unknown experimental electron density of trans-epoxysuccinyl amides and the well-known function of related drugs. Intramolecular substituent effects are separated from intermolecular crystal packing effects on the electron density, which allows us…

A wide family of pyridoxal thiosemicarbazone ferric complexes: Syntheses, structures and magnetic properties

2009

Abstract This study reports the syntheses and the characterization of 12 ferric complexes of pyridoxal thiosemicarbazone. The richness of the coordination chemistry of this ligand is highlighted by the modulation of its charge from neutral H 2 L to anionic L 2− , thus leading to a wide family of ferric compounds with charge varying from +3 to −1. The structures of complexes [Fe(HL) 2 ]ClO 4  · 2H 2 O and [Fe(HL)L] · 4.5H 2 O were solved and discussed with a particular attention brought to the intermolecular interactions occurring between the complexes. The investigation of magnetic properties of these compounds revealed that two of them are in the HS state at any temperature, whereas the ot…

Behaviour of modified and unmodified polybutadienes in the semidilute regime

1997

Abstract The association behaviour of polybutadiene modified with 4-phenyl-l,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione was studied in semidilute solution through static (SLS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The results were compared with the unmodified polybutadiene, whose behavior in semidilute solution was also studied as function of the molecular weight. At higher concentrations a small-angle excess scattering in SLS and a slow mode motion in DLS were observed both for modified and unmodified polybutadienes suggesting the presence of large clusters. Increasing the polymer concentration, the mass fraction of the slow motion increases up to values near 1, indicating a proximity to the gel point. For po…

Density functional theory study of the mechanism of the proline-catalyzed intermolecular aldol reaction

2002

Transition structures associated with the C-C bond-formation step of the proline-catalyzed intermolecular aldol reaction between acetone and isobutyraldehyde have been studies using density functional theory methods at the B3LYP/6-31G** computational level. A continuum model has been selected to represent solvent effects. For this step, which is the stereocontrolling and rate-determining step, four reactive channels corresponding to the syn and anti arrangement of the active methylene of the enamine relative to the carboxylic acid group of l-proline and the re and si attack modes to both faces of the aldehyde carbonyl group have been analyzed. The B3LYP/6-31G** energies are in good agreemen…

Halogen bonded supramolecular complexes and networks

2008

In spite of some controversy of the true nature of the interaction between polarized halogen atoms and neutral or charged Lewis bases, termed “halogen bonding”, as a primary interaction, it is a very useful new tool/way to construct supramolecular complexes and networks. This is especially true in solid state supramolecular chemistry where utilization of weak intermolecular interactions such as halogen bonding opens up new insights to materials design and supramolecular synthesis.

Different structural destinations: comparing reactions of [CuBr2(3-Brpy)2] crystals with HBr and HCl gas

2011

Reaction of green crystalline solid trans-[CuBr2(3-Brpy)2] 1 (3-Brpy = 3-bromopyridine) with HBr (aq) vapour yields brown crystalline salt (3-BrpyH)2[CuBr4] 2 with quantitative conversion. Notably 2 adopts a different crystal structure to the three mutually isostructural compounds (3-XpyH)2[CuCl4] (X = Cl, Br) and (3-BrpyH)2[CuBr2Cl2] which result from reaction with HCl. Crystalline product 2 has been characterised by X-ray powder diffraction and its conversion back to 1 at 370–400 K has been followed in situ by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. Crystalline 1 and 2 are further notable for the presence of intermolecular C–Br⋯Br–Cu halogen bonds and (only in the case of 2) N–H⋯Br–Cu hydro…
