Dynamics and Thermodynamics of Traffic Flow
2009
Application of thermodynamics to traffic flow is discussed. On a microscopic level, traffic flow is described by Bando’s optimal velocity model in terms of accelerating and decelerating forces. It allows us to introduce kinetic, potential, as well as a total energy, which is the internal energy of the car system in view of thermodynamics. The total energy is however not conserved, although it has a certain value in any of the two possible stationary states corresponding either to a fixed point or to a limit cycle solution in the space of headways and velocities.

Application of thermodynamics to driven systems
2007
Application of thermodynamics to driven systems is discussed. As particular examples, simple traffic flow models are considered. On a microscopic level, traffic flow is described by Bando's optimal velocity model in terms of accelerating and decelerating forces. It allows to introduce kinetic, potential, as well as total energy, which is the internal energy of the car system in view of thermodynamics. The latter is not conserved, although it has certain value in any of two possible stationary states corresponding either to fixed point or to limit cycle in the space of headways and velocities. On a mesoscopic level of description, the size n of car cluster is considered as a stochastic varia…
Influence of Internal Energy on the Stability of Relativistic Flows
2003
A set of simulations concerning the influence of internal energy on the stability of relativistic jets is presented. Results show that perturbations saturate when the amplitude of the velocity perturbation approaches the speed of light limit. Also, contrary to what predicted by linear stability theory, jets with higher specific internal energy appear to be more stable.
Probing the Internal Structure of Magnetized, Relativistic Jets with Numerical Simulations
2016
From an observational point of view, unveiling the physical processes behind the nature of the jets emanating from radio-loud AGN demands the resolution of the structure across the jet with the highest angular resolutions. Relying on a magneto-fluid dynamical description, numerical simulations can help to characterize the internal structure of jets (transversal structure, magnetic field structure, internal shocks, etc.). In the first part of the paper, we shall discuss equilibrium models of magnetized, relativistic, infinite, axisymmetric jets with rotation propagating through a homogeneous, static, unmagnetized ambient medium. Then, these transversal equilibrium profiles will be used to bu…
Thermodynamic pressure in nonlinear nonequilibrium thermodynamics of dilute nonviscous gases.
2000
In this paper, using extended thermodynamics, we build up a nonlinear theory for a dilute nonviscous gas under heat flux. The fundamental fields are the density, the velocity, the internal energy density, and the heat flux. The constitutive theory is builtup without approximations. We single out the nonlinear complete expressions of the Gibbs equation and of the nonequilibrium pressure. In particular, we determine the complete expressions furnished by the theory for the nonequilibrium pressure tensor and thermodynamic pressure, i.e., the derivative of the nonequilibrium internal specific entropy with respect to the specific volume, times the nonequilibrium temperature. In a second-order app…
A Divergence-Free High-Resolution Code for MHD
2001
We describe a 2.5D numerical code to solve the equations of ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). The numerical code, based on high-resolution shock-capturing (HRSC) techniques, solves the equations written in conservation form and computes the numerical fluxes using a linearized Riemann solver. A special procedure is used to force the conservation of magnetic flux along the time.
First-order interface localization-delocalization transition in thin Ising films using Wang-Landau sampling
2004
Using extensive Monte Carlo simulations, we study the interface localization- delocalization transition of a thin Ising film with antisymmetric competing walls for a set of parameters where the transition is strongly first-order. This is achieved by estimating the density of states (DOS) of the model by means of Wang-Landau sampling (WLS) in the space of energy, using both, single-spin-flip as well as N-fold way updates. From the DOS we calculate canonical averages related to the configurational energy, like the internal energy, the specific heat, as well as the free energy and the entropy. By sampling microcanonical averages during simulations we also compute thermodynamic quantities relat…
Local thermal equilibrium and ideal gas Stephani universes
2005
The Stephani universes that can be interpreted as an ideal gas evolving in local thermal equilibrium are determined. Five classes of thermodynamic schemes are admissible, which give rise to five classes of regular models and three classes of singular models. No Stephani universes exist representing an exact solution to a classical ideal gas (one for which the internal energy is proportional to the temperature). But some Stephani universes may approximate a classical ideal gas at first order in the temperature: all of them are obtained. Finally, some features about the physical behavior of the models are pointed out.
Entropy theory and glass transition: A test by Monte Carlo simulation
1997
This article reviews the results of a test of the Gibbs-DiMarzio theory by Monte Carlo Simulation. The simulation employed the bond-fluctuation model on a simple cubic lattice. This model incorporates two kinds of interactions: the excluded volume interaction among all monomers of the melt and an internal energy of the chains, which favors large bonds and makes the chains stiffen with decreasing temperature. The stiffening of the chains leads to an increase of their volume requirements, which competes with the packing constraints at low temperatures. This competition strongly slows down the structural relaxation of the melt and induces the glassy behavior. The model therefore takes into acc…
