Key barriers for global software product development organizations

2009

Increasingly, software products development companies are attempting to make transition from traditional centralized local development to global development. This transition is taking place due to intense competition, availability of high quality and low cost software professionals in various countries, and advent of communication and information technologies to link the disperse groups. Due to a significant lack of research on the global software product (GSP) development organization, companies are commonly attempting to develop standardized software products by using an adhoc global project organization. In making transition from local development of software product to global developmen…

How Brexit affects EU external action: The UK’s legacy in European international cooperation

2018

Abstract What exactly Brexit means for British engagement in European external affairs and development cooperation, is highly unclear, while its potential impact is considerable. After the general election in the UK on 8 June 2017, uncertainty regarding the direction, process and timing of the Brexit negotiations and the risk of a disorderly separation have risen further. The government position of a ‘hard Brexit’ seems no longer to be carved in stone. Yet, given the expected – total or partial – withdrawal of a major EU member state, like any area of EU politics, also European development policy faces a number of challenges: short-term problems regarding existing legal obligations, looming…

Regional Development Policies in the Philippines

2017

Is Manila too big for the Philippines? Should the government encourage the development of other areas to relieve the burden on the capital region? This chapter examines the efforts of successive Philippine governments to implement a policy of regional planning for a more balanced development of the country. Integrated development schemes, for example in the Bicol River basin, have given way to a policy in favor of special economic zones and growth centers away from Metro Manila. Among them, the Subic and Clark areas, long known as gigantic American military facilities, are now the focus of an effort to create better business and living environments. Cebu, the Philippines’ second city, is al…

Interpreting the Sustainable Development Goals through the Perspectives of Utopia and Governance

2021

The article analyses the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from the perspective of their self-understanding of political sense expressed in key SDG documents, including both UN documents and reports produced by individual countries. Utopia and governance are presented as ideal-typical approaches and analytical tools for qualitative content analysis. This approach is argued to be particularly illuminating in the case of politics of international development, as international development is simultaneously highly utopian and deeply embedded in rationalities of governance. As this analytical framework is applied to the SDGs, it is shown that their utopian pronouncements are related to the id…

Operationalization of un-captured GDP - Innovation stream under new global mega-trends

2016

With the understanding that current ICT-driven global development depends on a trend shifting from traditional co-evolution of computer-initiated ICT, captured GDP, and economic functionality to new co-evolution of the Internet, un-captured GDP, and supra-functionality beyond economic value, the following hypothetical view was postulated: The disparity between the world's ICT leader countries with respect to happiness/welfare amidst great stagnation (Finland) or conspicuous economic growth (Singapore) can be attributed to the difference of the state in the above shifting trends. The foregoing hypothetical view was demonstrated on the basis of an empirical analysis measuring dependency on un…

WITTA Between Globalization and Localization: New Challenges in View of Geopolitical Developments, Impending Digitalization, and Artificial Intellige…

2020

Internationalization of higher education also concerns the training of translators, interpreters, and other language service providers. Their services will continue to be of paramount importance for global development, where they become increasingly important as a bridge for economic and cultural exchanges. The Belt and Road Initiative of China will strengthen the demand for language services in an increasingly transnational environment. Since new forms of cooperation are necessary and desirable, WITTA as a new association should strive at becoming an autonomous transnational Think Tank that generates policy-oriented research, analysis, and advice on domestic and international issues in the…

Learning, Philosophy, and African Citizenship

2022

This open access book discusses and addresses the compelling questions concerning the ideals of citizenship, the processes of learning to fulfill these ideals, and possibilities of education in fostering citizenship. Rather than advocating for one framework, the authors demonstrate the continuously contested nature of the concept of citizenship as theoretically discussed and practically experienced. The monograph combines, in an unconventional way, selected philosophical accounts and everyday experiences from certain locations in Tanzania and Uganda. It provides contributions from philosophical ideas drawing on scholars such as Chantal Mouffe, Rosi Braidotti, Theodor Adorno, and Étienne Bal…

The Low Dimensionality of Development

2020

AbstractThe World Bank routinely publishes over 1500 “World Development Indicators” to track the socioeconomic development at the country level. A range of indices has been proposed to interpret this information. For instance, the “Human Development Index” was designed to specifically capture development in terms of life expectancy, education, and standard of living. However, the general question which independent dimensions are essential to capture all aspects of development still remains open. Using a nonlinear dimensionality reduction approach we aim to extract the core dimensions of development in a highly efficient way. We find that more than 90% of variance in the WDIs can be represen…

100 Jahre Zeitschrift für Orthopädie

2008

The article affords insight into the one hundred years' history of the Journal of Orthopedics. The existing 130 volumes reflect the change in the orthopedic spectrum of illness, diagnostic investigation and treatment. Already in its first few years of existence, the journal was a forum for international exchange. Investigation of various epochs showed that the editors applied strict scientific standards in selecting the publication, despite basis changing historical conditions. They were able to prevent political interventions appreciably influencing the character of the journal. At the same time, the negative effects which the two world wars and National Socialism had on the further develo…

Relevance of trade facilitation in emerging countries exports

2012

The objective of this article is to analyse trade flows in emerging nations with a maritime boundary, where trade facilitation plays a decisive role in their international development. In order to detect possible patterns in performance, we apply the economic approach of gravity models using the World Bank Logistic Performance Index (LPI) as a good proxy of trade facilitation. The results of the estimation lead to the conclusion that the more complex the transportation of goods is, the more influential the logistics indicator, trade facilitation being most prominent in Middle East exporters.
