Computer assisted language learning and the internationalisation of the Portuguese language in higher education contexts
2015
The internationalisation of the Portuguese language has become a priority for academic institutions of different Portuguese-speaking countries which are trying to adapt to the current context of globalisation and ubiquitous communications through digital media. In order to achieve it, several challenges should be faced, namely providing international students with resources aimed at helping them improve their Portuguese while fostering its use in academic and scientific contexts. This can be done by identifying, creating and editing high-quality teaching materials which bear in mind the sociocultural, political, economic and linguistic contexts; using the Information and Communication Techn…
The requisite match between internal resources and network ties to cope with knowledge scarcity
2020
PurposeThis paper aims to investigate the internationalization strategies of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), focusing on the interaction between network ties and “soft” internal resources at the foundation of knowledge management (KM). Specifically, it identifies the firms’ internal capabilities that affect KM strategies, and their collective influence on the degree of internationalization; verifies the influence of network ties on the internationalization process itself; and develops a conceptual “preliminary theoretical framework of SME internationalization capabilities and networks.”Design/methodology/approachThe primary research and analysis are based on a proportional stratified s…
Ambivalent English : What We Talk About When We Think We Talk About Language
2020
The ambivalence of English manifests itself in the discourses that surround it. English may be a resource and consume resources; it empowers and oppresses. The dichotomous discussion around the usefulness or dangers of English as a “global” or “world” language erases problematizations of the layered societal implications of English in localised contexts. English needs to be analysed not (only) as a language but (also) as the ideologies and societal structures intertwined with it. We examine English in two higher education contexts. Our first case deals with the so-called Accent Reduction courses offered for international students in US universities. The second one analyses English as a lang…
ANÁLISIS DE LA RELACIÓN ENTRE EL COMPROMISO EXPORTADOR Y LAS AYUDAS A LA INTERNACIONALIZACIÓN DE LAS EMPRESAS /
2004
THE SICILIAN VINEYARD/WINE MAKING CULTURE IN THE INTERNATIONAL CONTEXT CAUGHT BETWEEN THE MARKET CRISIS AND THE NEW COMPETITIVE BUSINESS SCENERY.
2010
The world wine market was subject, in the last few years, to deep changes that have affected the production, consumption and trade flows as a result of both the new CMO wine reform and the entry of new producing countries in EU as well as of the processes of liberalization of international trade. The market liberalisation and the increasing globalisation, widened the opportunities for placing wine as a product in new markets, unreachable until a few years ago: China, India, the Far East, and large areas of Central and South America, are not to be considered only as new competitors in various manufacturing sectors, but could provide important new market opportunities for wine companies and n…
Big data analytics and internationalisation in Italian firms
2022
The chapter focuses on the role of big data in developing firms’ international e-commerce. We explore the effect of three different types of big data approaches on the probability of firms entering international markets via web sales. Specifically, we consider the following approaches: (a) use of big data managed by internal firm staff; (b) use of big data managed by specialised consulting firms; and (c) use of big data jointly managed by internal firm staff and specialised consultant firms. Applying qualitative data models on a large sample of Italian firms (about 18,900 firms), we find that the use of big data managed by internal staff or by specialised consulting firms is positively asso…
Socioemotional Wealth and Networking in the Internationalisation of Family SMEs
2021
In internationalisation processes, international expansion exposes family SMEs to external networking and the risks such expansion entails, and perceived threats to their socioemotional wealth (SEW) might restrain their willingness to take these actions. However, very few studies measure SEW and associate it with internationalisation. Considering SEW preservation’s prominence in family SMEs and SMEs’ heavy dependence on networking during internationalisation, we hypothesise that SEW preservation has a negative association and networking has a positive association with the family SMEs’ degree of internationalisation (DOI). We reconstruct four SEW constructs that carry significance for family…
Studentmobilitet i høyere utdanning : Muligheten som fostrer ambisjoner og endrer selvforståelse
2018
Masteroppgave global utvikling og samfunnsplanlegging UT505 - Universitetet i Agder 2018 The background for this paper is to identity how foreign exchange affects future prospects for students. The only claim for participating in data collection, was that the students were at the moment students at University of Agder and had been or was currently on foreign studies. The anal…
Emplacing English as lingua franca in international higher education: A spatial perspective on linguistic diversity
2022
Within higher education, internationalisation is increasingly important for students and academics alike. In this context, English as the lingua franca has gained prominence. The ostensible ubiquity of English rests on a particular rendering of the language as unitary, fixed, and undifferentiated. In this paper, we challenge this notion of English and use a spatial approach to explore the multiplicity of Englishes on display within the higher education context. Increasingly, within higher education outside Anglophone countries, English Medium Instruction (EMI) is seen as a crucial indicator of internationalisation: the term ‘international programmes' is often used as a proxy for programmes …
Transformation of the agricultural financial system in the age of globalisation
2017
The paper is an attempt to address the advantages and risks connected with the wave of financial globalisation, with a focus on its impact on financial policy in European agriculture. The aim of the paper is to identify the basic conditions of the functioning and change of the financial system of agriculture under the conditions of the globalisation of financial markets. Financial globalisation, also referred to as financial integration or openness, is understood as an increase in global ties and interdependences caused by capital flows. Potentially, globalisation can bring a lot of benefits, which are manifested in an acceleration of economic growth and decreased fluctuation in consumption…
