International Strategic Alliances and the Internationalization Process: The Family Ownership Effect
2010
This study examines whether the ownership structure of Italian firms affects the internationalization process of firms that completed equity international strategic alliances (EISA). This paper provides a comparison of the internationalization intensity, the internationalization commitment, the choice of country and the growth of organisation between family businesses and non-family businesses. Financial data of Italian firms that completed an EISA between 2003 and 2006 were used. The analysis of data shows that family ownership has an effect on the internationalization intensity. In fact, family businesses are more internationalised than non-family businesses if firms have completed an equ…
The internationalization of family businesses: A review of extant research
2010
Among family businesses (FBs) internationalization has become a strategy for growth, and sometimes even for survival. This review article presents an analysis conducted on 25 refereed journal articles on FB internationalization. The articles typically portrayed the internationalization of FBs as a sequential process following the Uppsala model of internationalization; by contrast, some FBs were regarded as “born-again” global firms. In methodological terms, most of the articles focused on what-questions rather than why/how-questions. The articles did not make much use of internationalization or FB-specific theories. Our study takes a step towards clarifying the following issues: (i) the cur…

The internationalisation of the Spanish food industry: the home market effect and European market integration
2015
<p>The objective of this study was to analyse, from a long-term perspective, the factors determining the process of the internationalisation of the Spanish agrifood industry. The paper concentrates on the empirical verification of the existence of a home market effect in the food and drink industries in Spain and on the effects on trade flows of integration into the European Union. With this aim in mind, we took into account the latest contributions to the estimation of the gravity equation for a sample of export flows from 13 agrifood subsectors between 1970 and 2012, with a destination of 175 markets. From the results of the study the existence of the “home market effect” stands out…
Higher Education and Global Social Injustice
2020
This dissertation, composed of three unique scholarly articles, explores some of the ways in which institutions of higher education facilitate and mitigate social injustice on a global scale. Specifically analyzing the behavior of administrative actors—defined as those that serve in a leadership role outside of the classroom—the purpose of the research was twofold. Firstly, I aimed to identify the mechanisms by which administrative actors at U.S. and Finnish institutions of higher education legitimized and rationalized their involvement in globally unjust educational practices. Secondly, I sought to identify the ways in which administrative actors in these economically privileged countries …

Towards an Internationalization of the Information Systems Curriculum
2012
Globalization has changed the requirements to professionals and students in all branches and sectors significantly in the past decade. However in the domain of Information Systems, these changes have not yet found their way into current study programs and curricula. We identify and validate core internationalization competences and their relation to IS specific competences based on an initial set of competence categories. This is the basis for designing learning services of the future. The presented study aims at validating both and identifying additional categories and competences. In this paper, we present the first results of this study focusing on the internationalization and knowledge …
