Restructuring university degree programmes: a new opportunity for ethics education?

2008

This article explores the possibilities of reinforcing ethics education at the university level within the context of new internationalisation processes. The situation in Spain is used as a case study. The article begins with a review of the rationale behind this issue and goes on to analyse the place of the ethical dimension in education in the proposals for adapting Spanish university degree programmes to the European Higher Education Area. Fieldwork carried out at three higher education institutions reveals that, while professors accept the institutional function of the university in ethics education, their hazy conception of the matter weakens the likelihood of a pedagogical approach in…

Análisis del proceso de internacionalización de la investigación española en ciencia y tecnología (1980-2007)

2012

The process of scientific internationalization in Spain is based on an analysis of the growth of scientific publications and the evolution of international collaboration in Spanish scientific papers indexed in the Science Citation Index-Expanded database between 1980 and 2007. The article examines science policies in Spain together with the investments in economic and human resources devoted to research, and their effects on the internationalization process. Scholarly research in Spain has become increasingly international over the last three decades. The main features of this process have been a linear growth of productivity in terms of the number of papers published per year; a progressiv…

Volatile Markets and Reluctant Entrepreneurs?

2011

Winston (1999) asks how well experience with the microeconomic theory of firms and commercial markets helps in understanding the economics of higher education. “That experience and those insights will be used by trustees, politicians, administrators, lawyers, reporters and the public, as well as by economists, to understand and evaluate the behavior of colleges and universities” (Winston, 1999, p. 13). What is interesting is who is not mentioned: faculty and students. This is because Winston’s purpose is to problematize the economic analogies of student and customer, as well as faculty markets and labor markets. Winton’s purpose is now very relevant in Finland. As of 1 January 2010, the Fin…

The Internationalisation of Higher Education in Brazil: Analysis of a Spanish-Brazilian Scientific Cooperation Project in CAL

2012

[EN] Over the past few years, the internationalisation of Higher Education has become a priority in Brazilian educational policies. The importance of internationalisation has become apparent thanks to numerous initiatives, ranging from the increase in funding for graduate and postgraduate research stays abroad to projects of scientific cooperation between universities in different countries. In this context, this paper explores a scientific cooperation project developed by two universities in Brazil and Spain: the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) and the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia (UPV), relating to the field of Computer-Assisted Learning (CAL). The French Higher Education Landscape

2016

The French higher education system is characterized by its recent move towards the Bologna process with the autonomy granted to university and the adoption of the 3-5-8 (Bachelor, Master, PhD) architecture, and its enduring dualism between public universities and Grandes Ecoles with heated discussions concerning the efficiency of the system and the existence of possible research synergies between the two parallel systems. Public universities are currently undergoing a vast transformation process with the creation of the COMUE and clusters of competiveness. A SWOT analysis hints at the urgent need for French higher education institutions to adapt to the demands of internationalization and gl…

Languages in Higher Education in Estonia and Latvia: Language Practices and Attitudes

2018

The institutions of higher education in Estonia and Latvia mainly function in the official languages of the countries, Estonian and Latvian. Yet, as in many places elsewhere the international nature of tertiary education has brought these languages into contact with others, mainly English. In addition, Russian is used in higher education in both countries. By analysing language practices and attitudes in higher education comparatively in Estonia and Latvia, the chapter reveals some of the purposes for which different languages are used in academia, and casts light on attitudes that students elicit towards the use of those languages. The results of the analysis indicate that while the overal…

The Short and Intense Post-Nationalist Period in Finnish Higher Education

2020

This chapter presents the transition from a nationalist to post-nationalist period since the 1980s as the increasing systematic mobility and European cooperation as well as the fall of the Soviet Union turned Finnish higher education towards Western cooperation. The new internationalization strategies first aimed at founding mobility programmes for higher education and then particularly English medium study programmes. Post-national nation state emerges in the analysis mainly as an actor on the global economy. The discourses of competition and success in the global markets are interwoven with discourses of protection of the nation state. The use of English as an ostensibly self-evident and …
