Perception-Based Study on the Value of Nature to People and Land Sparing for Nature in Brazil and Poland

2020

Understanding perception about nature is paramount to understanding human behavior and decision making on the environment. We performed a survey-based study in Brazil and Poland to better understand the perception of land sparing for nature and the perceived value of nature. The countries were selected by intentional sampling and given their importance for local and global biodiversity conservation, and complex socio-ecological context of conservation versus agroforestry business. We performed an online questionnaire (N = 1030) in Brazil and face-to-face interviews in Poland (N = 322). We found that Brazilian respondents demonstrated more pro-environmental attitudes than Polish survey parti…

How Long Is Too Long in Contemporary Peer Review? Perspectives from Authors Publishing in Conservation Biology Journals

2015

Delays in peer reviewed publication may have consequences for both assessment of scientific prowess in academics as well as communication of important information to the knowledge receptor community. We present an analysis on the perspectives of authors publishing in conservation biology journals regarding their opinions on the importance of speed in peer-review as well as how to improve review times. Authors were invited to take part in an online questionnaire, of which the data was subjected to both qualitative (open coding, categorizing) and quantitative analyses (generalized linear models). We received 637 responses to a total of 6,547 e-mail invitations sent. Peer-review speed was gene…

2018

Abstract Coastal waters of the Valencia region are important habitats for bottlenose dolphins, but also important fishing grounds for artisanal fisheries. No studies have been carried out here to investigate the overlap and interactions between the fishing grounds and dolphin habitat. The present study aims to assess the potential occurrence of interactions between artisanal fisheries and bottlenose dolphins in these waters. Face to face interviews were conducted to investigate for the first time artisanal fishermen's perceptions of their interactions with bottlenose dolphins. A total of 131 fishermen (40.1% of the artisanal fleet for the Valencia region) participated of research. Among the…

Bidimensional Structure of the Orthorexia: Development and Initial Validation of a New Instrument

2018

Conceptual framework for precision cancer medicine in Germany: Consensus statement of the Deutsche Krebshilfe working group ‘Molecular Diagnostics an…

2020

Precision cancer medicine (PCM) holds great promises to offer more effective therapies to patients based on molecular profiling of their individual tumours. Although the PCM approach seems intuitive, multiple conceptional and structural challenges interfere with the broad implementation of PCM into clinical practice. Accordingly, concerted national and international efforts are needed to guide the further development and broad adoption of PCM in Germany. With support of the 'German Cancer Aid' (Deutsche Krebshilfe [DKH]) a task force 'Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy' was implemented. In two workshops supported by the DKH, delegates from the fourteen comprehensive cancer centresidentified …

Consumer interest towards tropical fruit: factors affecting avocado fruit consumption in Italy

2017

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to identify the main factors affecting the consumption of avocado fruit among Italian consumers. In order to respond to the aim of the study, an empirical survey was conducted through the submission of an online questionnaire to 327 consumers. An ordered logit econometric model was adopted to examine the relationship among some explanatory variables and the frequency of consumption of avocado fruit. The findings of this study show that the consumption of avocado fruit is affected by different factors, including fruit consumption habit, neophilia attitudes, and various intrinsic and extrinsic quality attributes (credence attributes in particular). The st…
