2021
Background There are no national arrangements for free school meals provision in Norway despite this being an important opportunity to improve children's and adolescents' nutritional status and ultimately their physical and cognitive development. During a one academic year (2014-2015), a group of Norwegian sixth graders were served a free healthy school meal in a project called 'The School Meal Project'. Objective To explore students' and teachers' experiences of receiving free school meals after the free school meal in 2015 and 5 years later. Design In-depth, semi-structured interviews with separate groups in 2015 and in 2020 were conducted face to face or via telephone or digital platform…
Studying Sensitive and Contradictory Family Situations - Considerations from Three Family Studies
2011
The purpose of this article is to discuss questions about studying sensitive and contradictory family situations, particularly in the process of gathering qualitative data via interviews. In the article, the authors ask what types of considerations are possible when studying such issues. Three ongoing family studies conducted in the social sciences by the authors are used as the basis for discussing the sensitive and contradictory nature of such family issues. The authors’ studies are about the foster children’s family relations, the sons of problem-drinking fathers and the families participating in a preventive family support system. Family matters are often perceived as being something pr…
Uutisia ranteessa? : älykellojen soveltuvuus journalismiin. Loppuraportti
2016
Suurin hyöty älykelloista on breaking news -uutistilanteissa, jolloin uut…
Child-centred curriculum leadership for the subject of English in Ethiopian primary schools
2017
According to Serbessa (2006) there is a tension between Western pedagogy, in particular child-centred learning, and traditional Ethiopian approaches to teaching. In this study, this tension is examined through the teaching methods used and the resources teachers have at their disposal. The teachers are herein viewed as curriculum leaders, contrasting with the preconception that managers are leaders of a curriculum (Hannay & Seller, 1991). By adopting the educator’s perspective, leadership will be explored from the position of how teachers apply the English syllabus under a curriculum demanding child-centred learning, when teaching English in a state and private international school. Compari…
Snacktivity™ to promote physical activity and reduce future risk of disease in the population: protocol for a feasibility randomised controlled trial…
2023
Abstract Background Many people do not regularly participate in physical activity, which may negatively impact their health. Current physical activity guidelines are focused on promoting weekly accumulation of at least 150 min of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA). Whilst revised guidance now recognises the importance of making small changes to physical activity behaviour, guidance still focuses on adults needing to achieve at least 150 min of MVPA per week. An alternative ‘whole day’ approach that could motivate the public to be more physically active, is a concept called Snacktivity™. Instead of focusing on achieving 150 min per week of physical activity, for example …
The Discursive Struggles of the Client–Worker Relationship in the Social Services
2020
This study examines how disability service workers identify the discourses of the client-worker relationships. We studied the clientworker relationship from the perspective of the relational dialectics theory with a focus on relational contradictions and the meanings created within discursive struggles. We analyzed the interview data from 22 social workers using contrapuntal analysis. According to the social workers’ perceptions, two discursive struggles exist in client-worker relationships: i) the struggle of integration, consisting of the contradiction of the ideal and the real and the contradiction of closeness and reservedness and ii) the struggle of certainty, consisting of the contrad…
Field conversations as a data source in qualitative social research
2020
2018
This article focuses on skilled migration flows from Southern Europe into Mexico. From semi-structured interviews with Spanish and Italian immigrants living in four Mexican cities of Mexico, it addresses both reasons for immigration and labour incorporation in Mexican labour markets. Specifically, it explores: i) the role of the economic crisis and the lack of good employment in the countries of origin as a key factor when deciding an international migration; ii) the employment opportunities offered in Mexican labour markets for the highly-skilled immigrants, and iii) the role played by the Mexican state and its current immigration law when channelling this group into the labour market

The quest for promoting integrated care in the Nordic countries – recent reform initiatives, outcomes and obstacles
2013
Coordination between primary and secondary health care has been the core of Nordic health policy during the last decade [1]. In 2012, Norway introduced a cooperation reform aiming for strengthening integration between primary and secondary health care [2]. Previously, Denmark introduced in 2007 “The Local Government Reform” to improve integration in the health care sector. During the last decades, Sweden has restructured for a more community oriented health care system [4]. The objective of the paper are to compare integrated health policy measures and reforms and their outcomes in Denmark, Sweden and Norway, with regard to success and obstacles for improving “seamless” health care. Current…
