Trialling the 4C framework in an Indian grade 3 mathematics classroom

2017

This thesis describes an action research carried out in a Grade 3 maths classroom in a low income, English medium school in Mumbai, India. The maths teacher in the study used the 4C model proposed by Do Coyle (2010) as a framework of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) for teaching maths in English to students whose exposure to English outside the classroom was negligible. The aim of this research was to understand from a teacher’s perspective how the 4C framework contributed to this specific context and how group-work enhanced the 4C framework. The action research was carried over a period of nearly five months in three cycles. Through the entire duration of the action research…

Rahoitusmarkkinainformaatio BRIC-maiden laajennetussa Taylorin säännössä

2017

Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan BRIC-maiden harjoittamaa rahapolitiikkaa vuosina 2005-2015.

The Quest for Raw Materials in the British Paper Trade : The Development of the Bamboo Pulp and Paper Industry in British India up to 1939

2018

The British paper trade history was defined since the mid-1850s by a quest for a new raw material to replace rags. The requirements of the paper trade were first met by a discovery that esparto grass from Spain, and later from North Africa, could be utilised in British mills. Beginning in the late 1870s, the success of using esparto encouraged mill developments in British India. The increased dependence on imported wood pulp, the likelihood of a pulp famine, and the consequent increase in price for imported wood pulp drew attention to the possibility of making commercial volumes of good quality pulp from indigenous Indian grasses. Bamboo began being treated after the First World War, when t…

Syngeneia e tradizioni coloniali in Sicilia (IG XII, IV, 1, 222, 223; I Magnesia 72).

2010

Earth System Chemistry integrated Modelling (ESCiMo) with the Modular Earth Submodel System (MESSy) version 2.51

2016

Abstract. Three types of reference simulations, as recommended by the Chemistry–Climate Model Initiative (CCMI), have been performed with version 2.51 of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts – Hamburg (ECHAM)/Modular Earth Submodel System (MESSy) Atmospheric Chemistry (EMAC) model: hindcast simulations (1950–2011), hindcast simulations with specified dynamics (1979–2013), i.e. nudged towards ERA-Interim reanalysis data, and combined hindcast and projection simulations (1950–2100). The manuscript summarizes the updates of the model system and details the different model set-ups used, including the on-line calculated diagnostics. Simulations have been performed with two diff…

Huomioita orientalistisesta muinaisuudesta : hegemoninen eurooppalainen diskurssi tamileista Etelä-Intiassa.

2007

Artikkelin tarkoitus on tarkastella Etelä-Intian Tamil Nadun maaseudulla sijaitsevan monikansallisen Auroville-yhteisön suhdetta ympäröivään tamilikulttuuriin. Auroville on lähinnä eurooppalaisten, amerikkalaisten ja intialaisten asuttama yhteisö, joka perustettiin 1960-luvun lopulla kokeilumielessä toteuttamaan ihmisykseyden ideaalia, jonka mukaan motivoituneet yhteisön jäsenet voivat erilaisista kulttuuritaustoistaan huolimatta elää yhdessä harmoniassa ja toisiaan inspiroivalla tavalla. Aurovillen läheisyydessä sijaitsee lukuisia tamilikyliä, joista yhteisö saa huomattavan osan työvoimastaan. Tamileiden ja aurovilleläisten suhde onkin yhteisössä jatkuvan keskustelun ja neuvottelun aiheena…

Framing Social Work Discourses of Violence Against Women. Insights From Finland and India

2021

Violence against women (VAW) is a global social problem. In India, its high prevalence is connected to gender inequality, whereas Finland suffers from the so-called Nordic Paradox—that is, the existence of both gender equality and a high prevalence of VAW. This qualitative study employed a critical constructioniist approach and frame analysis to analyze data from interviews with Finnish (n =20) and Mumbai (n =18) social workers. We asked how social workers frame their response to VAW and how ways of framing elucidate institutional practices that facilitate the interventions. Anti-oppressive, juridical, procedural, and collaborational frames revealed institutional practices mirroring how soc…

GraphoLearn India : The Effectiveness of a Computer-Assisted Reading Intervention in Supporting Struggling Readers of English

2018

India, a country with a population of more than 1.3 billion individuals, houses the world’s second largest educational system. Despite this, 100 of millions of individuals in India are still illiterate. As English medium education sweeps the country, many are forced to learn in a language which is foreign to them. Those living in poverty further struggle to learn English as it tends to be a language which they have no prior exposure to and no support at home for. Low-quality schools and poor instructional methods further exacerbate the problem. Without access to quality education, these individuals continue to struggle and are ultimately never given the chance to break the cycle of poverty.…

GraphoLearn India : the effectiveness of a computer-assisted reading intervention in supporting English readers in India

2018

Illiteracy is still a critical problem in many parts of the developing world. India, with a population of over 1.3 billion individuals, has a literacy rate of only 72%. Those living in poverty are at an even higher risk of never achieving literacy due to limited access to quality education. With a strong push towards English education sweeping the country, those in poverty further struggle to learn a language which is foreign to them. Without access to quality education, these individuals are ultimately never given the chance to break the cycle of poverty. The aim of this study was to determine whether GraphoLearn, a computer-assisted reading intervention, could be used to support the Engli…
