Intramolecular photocycloaddition of anthracene and benzene ring systems

2002

Abstract The anthracenes 3a – c , substituted in the 9-position with 3,5-dialkoxybenzyloxymethyl groups exhibit, in diluted solutions, intramolecular [4π+4π] photocycloaddition reactions to the polycyclic compounds 4a – c . The quantitative processes are completely reversible by heating, unless acid-catalyzed cleavages lead to thermally stable mono- and diketones: 4a – c → 5a – c → 6 .

Intramolecular electronic excitation energy transfer in donor∕acceptor dyads studied by time and frequency resolved single molecule spectroscopy

2008

Electronic excitation energy transfer has been studied by single molecule spectroscopy in donor/acceptor dyads composed of a perylenediimide donor and a terrylenediimide acceptor linked by oligo(phenylene) bridges of two different lengths. For the shorter bridge (three phenylene units) energy is transferred almost quantitatively from the donor to the acceptor, while for the longer bridge (seven phenylene units) energy transfer is less efficient as indicated by the occurrence of donor and acceptor emission. To determine energy transfer rates and efficiencies at the single molecule level, several methods have been employed. These comprise time-correlated single photon counting techniques at r…

Novel isoquinoline derivatives as antimicrobial agents.

2013

The wide variety of potent biological activities of natural and synthetic isoquinoline alkaloids encouraged us to develop novel antimicrobial isoquinoline compounds. We synthesized a variety of differently functionalized 1-pentyl-6,7-dimethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolines (THIQs), including dihydroisoquinolinium salts (2 and 5), methyl pentanoate-THIQ (6), 1-pentanol-THIQ (7), ester derivatives (8-15) and carbamate derivatives (16-23). We employed classic intramolecular Bischler-Napieralski cyclodehydration to generate the isoquinoline core. All the structures were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry. The bactericide and fungicide activities were evaluated f…

Polychromatic femtosecond fluorescence studies of metal–polypyridine complexes in solution

2011

Femtosecond-resolved broadband fluorescence studies are reported for[ M(bpy)(3)](2+) (M = Fe, Ru), RuN3 and RuN719 complexes in solution. We investigated the pump wavelength dependence of the fluorescence of aqueous [ Fe(bpy)(3)](2+) and the solvent and ligand dependence of the fluorescence of Ru-complexes excited at 400 nm. For all complexes, the (MLCT)-M-1 fluorescence appears at zero time delay with a mirror-like image with respect to the absorption. It decays in <= 30-45 fs due to intersystem crossing to the (MLCT)-M-3 states, but a longer lived component of similar to 190 fs additionally shows up in RuN719 and RuN3. No solvent effects are detected. The very early dynamics are character…

Synthesis, Characterization, and X-ray Crystal Structures of Cyclam Derivatives. 8. Thermodynamic and Kinetic Appraisal of Lead(II) Chelation by Octa…

2005

En route toward the development of hybrid organic−inorganic extracting materials incorporating lead-selective chelators and their implementation in water purification processes, the lead(II) binding properties of three N-carbamoylmethyl-substituted 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecanes (cyclams) have been fully investigated by spectroscopic (IR, UV−vis, MALDI-TOF MS, 1H and 13C NMR), X-ray crystallographic, potentiometric, and kinetic methods. Solution NMR studies revealed that the Pb2+ ion is entrapped in a molecular cage constituted by the four macrocyclic nitrogen and four amidic oxygen atoms. Protonation and lead binding constants determined in aqueous solution were shown to be linearly de…

Light-induced opening and closing of the intramolecular hydrogen bond in glyoxylic acid.

2013

The isomerization process of glyoxylic acid (GA) conformers and their complexes with a water molecule were studied in a low temperature argon matrix. The research target was to understand how starting conformation and complexation affects the near-IR (NIR) induced conformer interconversion. The most stable GA conformer (Tc) is characterized by an intramolecular hydrogen bond, and it is found to undergo light-induced conformer interconversion slower than the open (Tt) conformer. Upon complexation with water, the isomerization processes slow down in the case of the Tc conformer, whereas for the Tt-based complex the influence of water is negligible on the isomerization process.

Microwave-Assisted Organocatalytic Enantioselective Intramolecular aza-Michael Reaction with α,β-Unsaturated Ketones

2011

An organocatalytic enantioselective intramolecular aza-Michael reaction of carbamates bearing conjugated ketones as Michael acceptors is described. By using 9-amino-9-deoxy-epi-hydroquinine as the catalyst and pentafluoropropionic acid as a co-catalyst, a series of piperidines, pyrrolidines, and the corresponding benzo-fused derivatives (indolines, isoindolines, tetrahydroquinolines, and tetrahydroisoquinolines) can be obtained in excellent yields and enantioselectivities. In addition, the use of microwave irradiation at 60 °C improves the efficiency of the process giving rise to the final products with comparable yields and enantiomeric excesses. Some mechanistic insights are also consider…

Stereocontrolled synthesis of azeto[2,1-b] quinazolines bearing three stereocenters via the intramolecular [2+2] cycloaddition between ketenimines an…

2004

Abstract A highly stereoselective synthesis of azeto[2,1- b ]quinazolines bearing three stereocenters (C1, C2, and C8) has been achieved via intramolecular [2+2] cycloaddition between ketenimine and imine functions supported on an ortho -benzylic scaffold. An asymmetric center adjacent to the iminic nitrogen atom, the future C8 carbon of the bicyclic product, efficiently controls the absolute configuration of the two new stereogenic carbon atoms of the azetidine ring, C1 and C2.

Understanding the mechanism of stereoselective synthesis of cyclopentenes via N-heterocyclic carbene catalyzed reactions of enals with enones.

2010

The N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalyzed addition of enals to enones to yield trans-cyclopentenes has been investigated using DFT methods at B3LYP/6-31G** computational level. This NHC catalyzed reaction comprises several steps. The first one is the formation of a Breslow intermediate, which nucleophilically attacks to the conjugated position of the enone to yield an enol-enolate. This second step is responsible for the trans relationship at the final cyclopentene. An intramolecular aldolic condensation allows for the formation of the alkoxy cyclopentane intermediate, that by intramolecular nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl group yields a bicyclic ether. The extrusion of the NHC catalys…

Palladium-Catalyzed Arylation of Linear and Cyclic Polyamines.

2005

Synthetic protocols for the palladium-catalyzed arylation of various linear and cyclic polyamines and polyoxapolyamines has been worked out. Pd(0) and Pd(II) complexes with such phosphine ligands as dppf, BINAP, PPF-OMe, P(tBu) 3 , 2-ditert-butylphosphino- 1,1'-biphenyl have been explored in the catalytic amination reactions. Monoamination of chloro-, bromo-, and iodoarenes with di-, tri-, and tetraamines have been carried out, condi- tions for di- and polyarylation of linear polyamines have been elaborated. Successful aryla- tion of 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (cyclene) and 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (cy- clam) have been conducted. Intramolecular diamination of dihaloarenes such …
