The Prevalence of Glaucoma in Young People.
2017
BACKGROUND Earlier information on the prevalence of glaucoma among children in Germany was based solely on estimates. Reported values for congenital glaucoma range from 1 in 10 000 to 1 in 68 000 depending on ethnic origin. The estimate for juvenile glaucoma is 1 in 44 000. METHODS The Gutenberg Health Study is a populationbased, prospective, monocentric cohort study with 15 010 participants aged 35 to 74. To determine the history-based prevalence of childhood glaucoma, participants were asked about the diagnosis of glaucoma, any operations for glaucoma that were performed, regular use of drugs for glaucoma, and the age of onset of glaucoma. The affected individuals were classified in four …
Transient reduction of the ocular perfusion pressure and the oscillatory potentials of the ERG
2005
Abstract Purpose. To evaluate the changes of the Oscillatory Potentials (OPs) of Electroretinogram (ERG) caused by short-term hypertension in human subjects, and their relationship with ocular perfusion pressure (OPP). Methods. Suction cup technique in 12 normal volunteers with OPs simultaneously recording. Results. Scotopic and photopic OPs were altered during OPP drop. Scotopic OPs showed more sensitiveness, with higher reduction (from 21% to 47%), when compared to the basal value, than in photopic recordings (from 14% to 34%). In both conditions, the relationship between OPP and OPs presented a steady amplitude before the trough after the +30 step, and rapid recovery after OPP normalisat…
Correlation of Crystallin Expression and RGC Susceptibility in Experimental Glaucoma Rats of Different Ages.
2018
Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide with age being an important risk factor. However, the pathogenesis remains poorly understood. Aim of this study was to focus on age-dependent molecular changes in an experimental animal model of glaucoma.Intraocular pressure was elevated in Sprague-Dawley rats aged 3, 14, and 47 weeks for a period of 7 weeks by episcleral vein cauterization. Ganglion cell loss was monitored by an immunohistochemical staining of the Brain-specific homeobox/POU (Pit-1, Oct-2, Unc-86) domain protein 3A positive cells in retinal flat-mounts and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography measuring the retinal nerve fiber layer thickness. Molecular pr…
Biomarkers for glaucoma: from the lab to the clinic
2017
Glaucoma, a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, is often not diagnosed until many years after disease onset. Early and objective diagnostic measures are yet missing. Besides the main risk factor, an elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), age, sex, and ethnicity are known to affect disease progression and severity. Furthermore, oxidative stress, elevated glutamate concentrations, and an autoimmune component are considered possible risk factors. We could identify several potential proteomic biomarkers in glaucoma and examine distinct changes in the glaucomatous human retina proteome. Using an experimental autoimmune glaucoma animal (EAG) model we could demonstrate an IOP-independ…
Outcome of Bleb Revision With Autologous Conjunctival Graft Alone or Combined With Donor Scleral Graft for Late-onset Bleb Leakage With Hypotony Afte…
2020
Prcis Treatment of leakage with ocular hypotony after trabeculectomy with mitomycin C (MMC) can be safely achieved through conjunctival patch alone or combined with donor scleral graft in cases of melted underlying sclera. Purpose To report outcomes of 2 surgical approaches for treating ocular hypotony in eyes with blebs with late-onset leakage after standard trabeculectomy with MMC. Methods Thirty consecutive cases with bleb leakage and hypotony underwent bleb revision surgery between 2009 and 2014 by the same surgeon (J.W.) at the Department of Ophthalmology of the Mainz University Medical Center, Germany. In 18 patients, an autologous conjunctival patch graft was applied. In 12 patients,…
Surgical management of acute angle-closure glaucoma after toric implantable contact lens implantation
2006
A case of pupillary block after implantation of an implantable contact lens (ICL) is reported, and surgical management and prevention are discussed. In a myopic patient, the best corrected visual acuity in the right eye was 20/50 with -15.50 -3.00 x 175. After uneventful implantation of an ICL, painful acute glaucoma developed with an intraocular pressure beyond measurable values. Apparent anterior vaulting of the ICL suggested a sizing problem. In a situation of a mid-wide dilated pupil, immediate explantation of the ICL was performed. Then, using a preoperative iris photography as guidance, an anterior chamber iris-claw toric phakic intraocular lens was implanted. On postoperative examina…
Role of nitric oxide synthase isoforms for ophthalmic artery reactivity in mice.
2014
Abstract Nitric oxide synthases (NOS) are involved in regulation of ocular vascular tone and blood flow. While endothelial NOS (eNOS) has recently been shown to mediate endothelium-dependent vasodilation in mouse retinal arterioles, the contribution of individual NOS isoforms to vascular responses is unknown in the retrobulbar vasculature. Moreover, it is unknown whether the lack of a single NOS isoform affects neuron survival in the retina. Thus, the goal of the present study was to examine the hypothesis that the lack of individual nitric oxide synthase (NOS) isoforms affects the reactivity of mouse ophthalmic arteries and neuron density in the retinal ganglion cell (RGC) layer. Mice defi…
Dynamics, alterations, and consequences of minimally invasive intraocular pressure elevation in rats.
2014
PURPOSE: An important, yet not exclusive, aspect of primary open angle glaucoma is elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) profiles within fluctuations and pressure peaks. The study aimed at establishing minimally invasive methods for recurrent IOP elevation in rats to investigate the impact of IOP dynamics and pathomorphologic retinal alterations during and after IOP elevation. METHODS: Intraocular pressure was elevated unilaterally in Long Evans rats to a level of ≈35 mm Hg for 1 hour in a total of 30 manipulations within 6 weeks, by using two methods: (1) suction-cup oculopression and (2) loop-adjusted oculopression. Retinal thickness (RT) was measured via optical coherence tomography (OCT),…
Risultati. La frequenza cardiaca è diminuita da 82,10±14,41 a 76,11±10,96 30’ dopo la …
