Training, management, and quality of nursing care of vascular access in adult patients: The INCATIV project

2021

Background:More than one billion of peripheral venous catheters are inserted into hospitalized patients every year. This study sought to identify the status of nursing care in vascular accesses in different hospitals and to evaluate the impact of a series of informative and formative interventions aimed at their care.Methods:Quasi-experimental, multicenter study. A total of 54 nursing professionals of 19 hospitals participated. The intervention consisted of informative talk and three training sessions related to the care and maintenance of vascular accesses and intravenous therapy in the hospital-admitted adult population. This was delivered in four years, with eight periodic cross-sectiona…

Chronisches Lidödem assoziiert mit Rosazea (Morbus Morbihan): Differenzialdiagnostische Schwierigkeiten und Therapieoptionen

2011

Background Morbus Morbihan is a rare complication of rosacea, consisting of a persistent lymphoedema of the upper part of the face. It has typically a chronic course, unspecific histopathological findings and an extreme refractoriness to therapy. Patients and methods Between February 2008 and January 2010, 5 patients with Morbus Morbihan were observed at the Department of Ophthalmology of the University Medical Centre Mainz. In the present cohort study, we describe the clinical, laboratory and histological findings that led to the diagnosis. The course of the affection and the results of different therapeutic options are also reported. Results Each patient underwent a complete ophthalmologi…

Incidence of peripheral intravenous catheter failure and complications in paediatric patients: Systematic review and meta analysis.

2020

Background: Most paediatric patients have at least one peripheral intravenous catheter insertion during their hospitalisation. Despite the important function of peripheral intravenous catheters for delivery of intravenous therapy, failure and complications rates are widely reported; however these results have not been synthesised. Objective: To provide an overall estimate of peripheral intravenous catheter failure and related complications in the paediatric population. Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis Data sources: The electronic databases, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, Cumulative Index of Nursing an…

Determination of Death in Execution by Lethal Injection in China.

2018

Abstract:Since 1997, execution in China has been increasingly performed by lethal injection. The current criteria for determination of death for execution by lethal injection (cessation of heartbeat, cessation of respiration, and dilated pupils) neither conform to current medical science nor to any standard of medical ethics. In practice, death is pronounced in China within tens of seconds after starting the lethal injection. At this stage, however, neither the common criteria for cardiopulmonary death (irreversible cessation of heartbeat and breathing) nor that of brain death (irreversible cessation of brain functions) have been met. To declare a still-living person dead is incompatible wi…

Left ventricular ejection fraction recovery in patients with heart failure treated with intravenous iron: a pilot study

2016

Aims In patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and iron deficiency, treatment with intravenous iron has shown a clinical improvement regardless of anaemic status. Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) T2* sequence has shown a potential utility for evaluating myocardial iron deficiency. We aimed to evaluate whether T2* sequence significantly changes after ferric carboximaltose (FCM) administration, and if such changes correlate with changes in left ventricle ejection fraction (LVEF). Methods and results In this pilot study, we included eight patients with chronic symptomatic (New York Heart Association II–III) HFrEF and iron deficiency. A CMR, including T2* analysis, w…

Intravenous ascorbic acid to prevent and treat cancer-associated sepsis?

2011

Abstract The history of ascorbic acid (AA) and cancer has been marked with controversy. Clinical studies evaluating AA in cancer outcome continue to the present day. However, the wealth of data suggesting that AA may be highly beneficial in addressing cancer-associated inflammation, particularly progression to systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and multi organ failure (MOF), has been largely overlooked. Patients with advanced cancer are generally deficient in AA. Once these patients develop septic symptoms, a further decrease in ascorbic acid levels occurs. Given the known role of ascorbate in: a) maintaining endothelial and suppression of inflammatory markers; b) protection fro…

The safety of intravenous fluorescein for confocal laser endomicroscopy in the gastrointestinal tract

2010

Aliment Pharmacol Ther 31, 548–552 Summary Background  Confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE) is rapidly emerging as a valuable tool for gastrointestinal endoscopic imaging. Fluorescent contrast agents are used to optimize imaging with CLE, and intravenous fluorescein is the most widely used contrast agent. Fluorescein is FDA-cleared for diagnostic angiography of the retina. For these indications, the safety profile of fluorescein has been well-documented; however, to date, fluorescein is not cleared for use with CLE. Aims  To estimate the rate of serious and total adverse events attributable to intravenous fluorescein when used for gastrointestinal CLE. Methods  We performed a cross sectional…

Efficacy and Safety of IQYMUNE®, a Ten Percent Intravenous Immunoglobulin in Adult Patients With Chronic, Primary Immune Thrombocytopenia

2018

Background: Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) IQYMUNE® is a highly purified 10% IVIG that was assessed using the new stringent definition of response described in the revised guideline on the clinical investigation of IVIG. The efficacy and the safety of IQYMUNE® were investigated in adult patients with chronic primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). Methods: In this phase III multinational, multicentre, prospective, uncontrolled, open-label, single-arm study, adult patients with a baseline platelet count < 30 × 10 9 /L were treated with IVIG 10% at a dose of 2 g/kg body weight administered over 2 consecutive days. The primary endpoint was Response over the study period and was defined accor…

Update on diagnostic strategies of pulmonary embolism

1999

Acute pulmonary embolism is a frequent disease with non-specific findings, high mortality, and multiple therapeutic options. A definitive diagnosis must be established by accurate, non-invasive, easily performed, cost-effective, and widely available imaging modalities. Conventional diagnostic strategies have relied on ventilation-perfusion scintigraphy complemented by venous imaging. If the results are inconclusive, pulmonary angiography, which is regarded as the gold standard, is to be performed. Recently, marked improvements in CT and MRI and shortcomings of scintigraphy led to an update of the diagnostic strategy. Spiral CT is successfully employed as a second-line procedure to clarify i…
