Nonlinear Dynamics of Topological Ferromagnetic Textures for Frequency Multiplication
2020
We propose that the non-linear radio-frequency dynamics and nanoscale size of topological magnetic structures associated to their well-defined internal modes advocate for their use as in-materio scalable frequency multipliers for spintronic systems. Frequency multipliers allow for frequency conversion between input and output frequencies, and thereby significantly increase the range of controllably accessible frequencies. In particular, we explore the excitation of eigenmodes of topological magnetic textures by fractions of the corresponding eigenfrequencies. We show via micromagnetic simulations that low-frequency perturbations to the system can efficiently excite bounded modes with a high…
Neutron Scattering in Nanomagnetism
2015
Abstract Polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR) has played an essential role for the exploration of nanomagnetic and spintronic materials, including exchange coupled magnetic superlattices, exchange bias systems between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic films, spin valves, exchange springs between soft and hard magnetic films, superconducting proximity effects, periodic lateral magnetic patterns, and magnetic nanoparticles. The main virtues of PNR are depth-resolved vector magnetometry in the film plane, high sensitivity to magnetic interfaces, and statistical analysis of magnetic domain fluctuations. Recently the capabilities of PNR have been carried over from steady state to dynamic inve…
Theory of Kondo suppression of spin polarization in nonlocal spin valves
2016
We theoretically analyze contributions from the Kondo effect to the spin polarization and spin diffusion length in all-metal nonlocal spin valves. Interdiffusion of ferromagnetic atoms into the normal metal layer creates a region in which Kondo physics plays a significant role, giving discrepancies between experiment and existing theory. We start from a simple model and construct a modified spin drift-diffusion equation which clearly demonstrates how the Kondo physics not only suppresses the electrical conductivity but even more strongly reduces the spin diffusion length. We also present an explicit expression for the suppression of spin polarization due to Kondo physics in an illustrative …
Identification of Néel Vector Orientation in Antiferromagnetic Domains Switched by Currents in NiO/Pt Thin Films
2021
Understanding the electrical manipulation of the antiferromagnetic order is a crucial aspect to enable the design of antiferromagnetic devices working at THz frequencies. Focusing on collinear insulating antiferromagnetic $\mathrm{Ni}\mathrm{O}/\mathrm{Pt}$ thin films as a materials platform, we identify the crystallographic orientation of the domains that can be switched by currents and quantify the N\'eel-vector direction changes. We demonstrate electrical switching between different T domains by current pulses, finding that the N\'eel-vector orientation in these domains is along [$\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}5$ $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}5$ 19], different compared to the bulk $⟨112⟩$ d…
Orientation-dependent direct and inverse spin Hall effects in Co60Fe20B20
2019
The spin Hall effect is a key element of various spintronics applications. Here, the authors study the orientation-dependent interconversion of spin and charge information in Co${}_{60}$Fe${}_{20}$B${}_{20}$. In a nonlocal magnon transport using Y${}_{3}$Fe${}_{5}$O${}_{12}$ as a spin conduit, the spin Hall effect amplitude depends on the relative alignment between the Y${}_{3}$Fe${}_{5}$O${}_{12}$ and Co${}_{60}$Fe${}_{20}$B${}_{20}$ magnetization vectors. In order to suppress direct magnonic contributions so as to study the electronic origin of this effect, Y${}_{3}$Fe${}_{5}$O${}_{12}$ and Co${}_{60}$Fe${}_{20}$B${}_{20}$ are exchange-decoupled by a Cu interlayer.
Monte Carlo Simulation of Electron Dynamics in Doped Semiconductors Driven by Electric Fields: Harmonic Generation, Hot-Carrier Noise and Spin Relaxa…
2011
In solid state electronics the miniaturization of integrated circuits implies that, even at moderate applied voltages, the components can be exposed to very intense electric fields. Advances in electronics push the devices to operate also under cyclostationary conditions, i.e. under large-signal and time-periodic conditions. A main consequence of this fact is that circuits exhibit a strongly nonlinear behavior. Furthermore, semiconductor based devices are always imbedded into a noisy environment that could strongly affect their performance, setting the lower limit for signal detection in electronic circuits. For this reason, to fully understand the complex scenario of the nonlinear phenomen…

Generation and Evolution of Spin-, Valley-, and Layer-Polarized Excited Carriers in Inversion-Symmetric WSe2
2016
We report the spin-selective optical excitation of carriers in inversion-symmetric bulk samples of the transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) ${\mathrm{WSe}}_{2}$. Employing time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (trARPES) and complementary time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), we observe spin-, valley-, and layer-polarized excited state populations upon excitation with circularly polarized pump pulses, followed by ultrafast ($l100\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{fs}$) scattering of carriers towards the global minimum of the conduction band. TDDFT reveals the character of the conduction band, into which electrons are initially excited, to be two-dimensional and localized wit…
The influence of disorder on the exciton spectra in two-dimensional structures
2019
We study the role of disorder in the exciton spectra in two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors. These can be heterostructures, thin films and multilayers (so-called van der Waals structures) of organometallic perovskites, transition metal dichalcogenides and other semiconductors for optoelectronic applications. We model the disorder by introduction of a fractional Laplacian (with Le´vy index m, defining the degree of disorder) to the Scro¨dinger equation with 2D Coulomb potential. Combining analytical and numerical methods, we observe that the exciton exists only for m 4 1, while the point m = 1 (strongest disorder) corresponds to the exciton collapse. We show also that in the fractional (diso…
Automotive domain wall propagation in ferromagnetic rings
2015
Automotive domain wall propagation is a self-propelling motion utilizing the energy stored in a particular energy reservoir of the spin structure to speed up domain wall beyond its equilibrium value given by external driving force and damping. Such a concept of DW motion is of great interest due to recent development of spintronic devices based on domain walls, where automotion could be used to assist or prevent domain wall pinning at low driving fields1-2. In turn, most of studies so far have been devoted to the automotion invoked by DW transformations from metastable to stable states3-4; appearing at sufficiently high magnetic fields strong and enough to trigger domain wall spin structure…
