Evaluation of subsurface drip irrigation emitters on a split-root container-grown citrus rootstock (citrange ‘Ccarrizo’)
2022
Among irrigation systems, subsurface drip irrigation allows obtaining values of water use efficiency higher than 90%. However, when emitters are installed below the soil surface, root intrusion can represent the main cause of emitter occlusion. To prevent this phenomenon, manufacturers normally include herbicides in the plastic matrix of the emitters. Objectives of this paper were: i) to evaluate the effectiveness of alternative anti-root agents embedded in the same emitter model and ii) to identify their possible effects on the growth of a commonly adopted citrus rootstock (citrange ‘Carrizo’). Five different anti-root agents were tested in 8 lined trees, planted in split-root containers i…

Decentralized Intrusion Detection In Cooperative Multi-Agent Systems
Logical Consensus for Distributed Network Agreement
2008
In this paper we introduce a novel consensus mechanism where agents of a network are able to share logical values, or Booleans, representing their local opinions on e.g. the presence of an intruder or of a fire within an indoor environment. Under suitable joint conditions on agents? visibility and communication capability, we provide an algorithm generating a logical linear consensus system that is globally stable. The solution is optimal in terms of the number of messages to be exchanged and the time needed to reach a consensus. Moreover, to cope with possible sensor failure, we propose a second design approach that produces robust logical nonlinear consensus systems tolerating a maximum n…
A Behavior-Based Intrusion Detection System Using Ensemble Learning Techniques
2022
Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) play a key role in modern ICT security. Attacks detected and reported by IDSs are often analyzed by administrators who are tasked with countering the attack and minimizing its damage. Consequently, it is important that the alerts generated by the IDS are as detailed as possible. In this paper, we present a multi-layered behavior-based IDS using ensemble learning techniques for the classification of network attacks. Three widely adopted and appreciated models, i.e., Decision Trees, Random Forests, and Artificial Neural Networks, have been chosen to build the ensemble. To reduce the system response time, our solution is designed to immediately filter out tra…
A geophysical and geochemical approach for seawater intrusion assessment in the Acquedolci coastal aquifer (Northern Sicily)
2007
Vertical electrical sounding (VES’) surveys and chemical analyses of groundwater have been executed in the coastal plain of Acquedolci (Northern Sicily), with the aim to circumscribe seawater intrusion phenomena. This urbanized area is representative of a more general problem interesting most of Mediterranean littoral areas, where intensive overdraft favors a heavy seawater intrusion through the coastline. Aquifer resistivity seems decisively to be conditioned by the chlorine and magnesium content in the main aquifer of the region. Schlumberger VES’, together with piezometric and chemical–physical information of groundwater, allowed us to perform hydrogeological and geophysical elaborations…
