Intrusion Detection with Interpretable Rules Generated Using the Tsetlin Machine

2020

The rapid deployment in information and communication technologies and internet-based services have made anomaly based network intrusion detection ever so important for safeguarding systems from novel attack vectors. To this date, various machine learning mechanisms have been considered to build intrusion detection systems. However, achieving an acceptable level of classification accuracy while preserving the interpretability of the classification has always been a challenge. In this paper, we propose an efficient anomaly based intrusion detection mechanism based on the Tsetlin Machine (TM). We have evaluated the proposed mechanism over the Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining 1999 (KDD’99) …

Part 1—You can run but you can't hide: Intrusive thoughts on six continents

2014

Abstract Most cognitive approaches for understanding and treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) rest on the assumption that nearly everyone experiences unwanted intrusive thoughts, images and impulses from time to time. These theories argue that the intrusions themselves are not problematic, unless they are misinterpreted and/or attempts are made to control them in maladaptive and/or unrealistic ways. Early research has shown unwanted intrusions to be present in the overwhelming majority of participants assessed, although this work was limited in that it took place largely in the US, the UK and other ‘westernised’ or ‘developed’ locations. We employed the International Intrusive Thoug…

Using continuous user authentication to detect masqueraders

2003

Nowadays computer and network intrusions have become more common and more complicated, challenging the intrusion detection systems. Also, network traffic has been constantly increasing. As a consequence, the amount of data to be processed by an intrusion detection system has been growing, making it difficult to efficiently detect intrusions online. Proposes an approach for continuous user authentication based on the user’s behaviour, aiming at development of an efficient and portable anomaly intrusion detection system. A prototype of a host‐based intrusion detection system was built. It detects masqueraders by comparing the current user behaviour with his/her stored behavioural model. The m…

Experimental assessment of the hydro-mechanical behaviour of a shale caprock during CO2 injection

2021

Abstract The presented experimental study focuses on the hydro-mechanical characterisation of a shale caprock (Opalinus Clay) in contact with carbon dioxide. The objective of this paper, consists in the evaluation of the material's sealing capacity in terms of entry-pressure, mechanical behaviour and sensitivity of the transport properties to chemo-mechanical effects induced by gaseous and liquid CO2 injection. Two types of Opalinus Clay core samples are tested; shaly and carbonate-rich. The sealing capacity has been evaluated on the shaly OPA according to the stepwise and the residual methods and compared to the results from mercury intrusion porosimetry. The obtained results and the diffe…

Confinement of Water in Hydrophobic Nanopores: Effect of the Geometry on the Energy of Intrusion

2013

International audience; Water confinement in the hydrophobic nanopores of highly siliceous zeolite having MFI and CHA topology is investigated by high pressure manometry coupled to differential calorimetry. Surprisingly, the intrusion of water is endothermic for MFI but exothermic for CHA. This phase transition depends on the geometry of the environment in which water is confined: channels (MFI) or cavities (CHA). The energy of intrusion is mainly governed by the change in the coordination of water molecules when they are forced to enter the nanopores and to adopt a weaker, hydrogen-bonded structure. At such a nanoscale, the properties of the molecules are governed strongly by geometrical r…

A Methodology to Detect Temporal Regularities in User Behavior for Anomaly Detection

2001

Network security, and intrusion detection in particular, represents an area of increased in security community over last several years. However, the majority of work in this area has been concentrated upon implementation of misuse detection systems for intrusion patterns monitoring among network traffic. In anomaly detection the classification was mainly based on statistical or sequential analysis of data often neglect ion temporal events' information as well as existing relations between them. In this paper we consider an anomaly detection problem as one of classification of user behavior in terms of incoming multiple discrete sequences. We present and approach that allows creating and mai…

Using Cloud Computing to Implement a Security Overlay Network

2012

This article proposes and analyzes a general cloud-based security overlay network that can be used as a transparent overlay network to provide services such as intrusion detection systems, antivirus and antispam software, and distributed denial-of-service prevention. The authors analyze each of these in-cloud security services in terms of resiliency, effectiveness, performance, flexibility, control, and cost.

Part 2. They scare because we care: The relationship between obsessive intrusive thoughts and appraisals and control strategies across 15 cities

2014

Abstract Cognitive models of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) purport that obsessions are normal intrusive thoughts that are misappraised as significant, leading to negative emotional responses and maladaptive attempts to control the thoughts and related emotions. This paper utilised a large multi-national dataset of interview data regarding intrusive thoughts, to investigate three questions related to the cognitive model of OCD and to its stability across cultures. First, the paper aimed to investigate the implicit yet-hitherto-untested assumption of cognitive models that misappraisals and control strategies for intrusive thoughts relate similarly across cultures. Second, this study aim…

An Efficient Intrusion Detection System for Selective Forwarding and Clone Attackers in IPv6-based Wireless Sensor Networks under Mobility

2017

Security in mobile wireless sensor networks is a big challenge because it adds more complexity to the network in addition to the problems of mobility and the limited sensor node resources. Even with authentication and encryption mechanisms, an attacker can compromise nodes and get all the keying materials. Therefore, an intrusion detection system is necessary to detect and defend against the insider attackers. Currently, there is no intrusion detection system applied to IPv6-based mobile wireless sensor networks. This paper is mainly interested in detecting the selective forwarding and clone attacks because they are considered among the most dangerous attackers. In this work, the authors de…
