Coseismic Damage at an Archaeological Site in Sicily, Italy: Evidence of Roman Age Earthquake Surface Faulting
2018
Archaeoseismology can provide a useful chronological tool for constraining earthquakes and documenting significant evidence that would otherwise be lost. In this paper, we report a case of surface faulting on ancient man-made structures belonging to the archaeological site of Santa Venera al Pozzo situated along the eastern flank of Mt. Etna volcano in eastern Sicily (southern Italy), which is affected by well-developed tectonic faults. Geological surveys highlight a set of fractures affecting the archaeological ruins, suggesting the occurrence of a capable fault zone across the area. An integrated geophysical survey was carried out in order to identify the main subsurface tectonic disconti…
Everyday life in old age: past, present, and future
2018
Aims: To explore how older Norwegian women living at home experience ageing, and how their everyday life has been influenced by their encounters with the challenges of life. Methods: A qualitative design, interviewing ten women age 90 or older, was employed. Results: The overall theme of the findings is how everyday life in old age is influenced by past, present and future. The subcategories focus on (a) changes in daily life, (b) giving an account of life as it is, (c) various perceptions of experienced loss, and finally, (d) thoughts about the future. Conclusions: Older women need the opportunity to reflect upon their past, present and future existence to have a good everyday life in old …
An integrated care pathway for cancer patients with diabetes: A proposal from the Italian experience
2020
Diabetes and cancer frequently coexist in the same subject, often with relevant clinical effects on the management and prognosis of the comorbid patient. The existing guidelines, however, do not appropriately address many clinical issues in this setting. Although collaboration between diabetologists and oncologists should play an important role in achieving appropriate levels of care, close coordination or agreement between these specialists is seldom offered. There is an urgent need for greater interdisciplinary integration between all specialists involved in this setting, for a shared approach ensuring that organisational silos are overcome. To this end, the Italian Associations of Medica…
Improved global-local model to predict guided-wave scattering patterns from discontinuities in complex parts
2019
Ultrasonic guided-wave testing can greatly benefit from (1) an ability to provide quantitative information on the damage that is being detected, and (2) an ability to select the best mode-frequency combination for maximum sensitivity to a given type of damage. Achieving these capabilities in complex structures (e.g. nonprismatic structures such as a stiffened panel in aerospace fuselages) is a nontrivial task. This paper will discuss an improved Global-Local (GL) method where the geometrical “local” discontinuity (e.g. the stiffener) is modelled by traditional FE discretization and the rest of the structure (“global” part) is modelled by Semi-Analytical Finite Element (SAFE) cross-sectional…
Global–local model for three-dimensional guided wave scattering with application to rail flaw detection
2021
This study presents a three-dimensional global–local formulation for the prediction of guided wave scattering from discontinuities (e.g. defects). The approach chosen utilizes the Semi-Analytical Finite Element method for the “global” portion of the waveguide, and a full Finite Element discretization for the “local” portion of the waveguide containing the discontinuity. The application of interest is the study of guided wave scattering from transverse head defects in rails. Theoretical scattering results are impossible to obtain in this case for a wide-frequency range. While three-dimensional Semi-Analytical Finite Element–Finite Element models for guided wave scattering studies have been …
When does Regression discontinuity design work? Evidence from random election outcomes
2018
We use elections data in which a large number of ties in vote counts between candidates are resolved via a lottery to study the personal incumbency advantage. We benchmark non‐experimental regression discontinuity design (RDD) estimates against the estimate produced by this experiment that takes place exactly at the cutoff. The experimental estimate suggests that there is no personal incumbency advantage. In contrast, conventional local polynomial RDD estimates suggest a moderate and statistically significant effect. Bias‐corrected RDD estimates that apply robust inference are, however, in line with the experimental estimate. Therefore, state‐of‐the‐art implementation of RDD can meet the re…
The boundary Harnack inequality for infinity harmonic functions in Lipschitz domains satisfying the interior ball condition
2008
Abstract In this note, we give a short proof for the boundary Harnack inequality for infinity harmonic functions in a Lipschitz domain satisfying the interior ball condition. Our argument relies on the use of quasiminima and the notion of comparison with cones.
Inverse symmetry breaking and the exact renormalization group
1996
We discuss the question of inverse symmetry breaking at non-zero temperature using the exact renormalization group. We study a two-scalar theory and concentrate on the nature of the phase transition during which the symmetry is broken. We also examine the persistence of symmetry breaking at temperatures higher than the critical one.
Pedagoģijas zinātnes ģenēze Latvijā no 20.gadsimta 20.gadiem līdz 60.gadu sākumam
2013
ANOTĀCIJA Ivetas Ozolas promocijas darba „Pedagoģijas zinātnes ģenēze Latvijā no 20. gadsimta 20. gadiem līdz 60. gadu sākumam” mērķis ir izpētīt, kā sociālpolitisku un zinātnes procesu kontekstā pedagoģija Latvijā laika posmā no 20. gadsimta 20. gadiem līdz 60. gadu sākumam veidojusies un attīstījusies kā patstāvīga zinātnes nozare. Darbā analizēti zinātnes veidošanās teorētiskie pamati, definējot dimensijas, kas raksturo atsevišķu zinātnes nozaru izveidošanos. Atbilstoši tām pētīta pedagoģijas zinātnes institucionālās, komunikatīvās un metodoloģiskās dimensijas attīstība Latvijā dažādu pedagoģijas paradigmu un sociālpolitisko apstākļu kontekstā. Pētījuma rezultāti apliecina, ka pedagoģija…
