Observation of light-by-light scattering in ultraperipheral Pb+Pb collisions with the ATLAS detector

This Letter describes the observation of the light-by-light scattering process, γγ→γγ, in Pb+Pb collisions at √sNN=5.02 TeV. The analysis is conducted using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.73 nb−1, collected in November 2018 by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Light-by-light scattering candidates are selected in events with two photons produced exclusively, each with transverse energy EγT>3 GeV and pseudorapidity |ηγ|<2.4, diphoton invariant mass above 6 GeV, and small diphoton transverse momentum and acoplanarity. Emergence of time-horizon invariant correlation structure in financial returns by subtraction of the market mode

We investigate the emergence of a structure in the correlation matrix of assets' returns as the time-horizon over which returns are computed increases from the minutes to the daily scale. We analyze data from different stock markets (New York, Paris, London, Milano) and with different methods. Result crucially depends on whether the data is restricted to the ``internal'' dynamics of the market, where the ``center of mass'' motion (the market mode) is removed or not. If the market mode is not removed, we find that the structure emerges, as the time-horizon increases, from splitting a single large cluster. Measurement of the inclusive and dijet cross-sections of b-jets in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

The inclusive and dijet production cross-sections have been measured for jets containing b-hadrons (b-jets) in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √s =7 TeV, using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurements use data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34 pb[superscript −1]. The b-jets are identified using either a lifetime-based method, where secondary decay vertices of b-hadrons in jets are reconstructed using information from the tracking detectors, or a muon-based method where the presence of a muon is used to identify semileptonic decays of b-hadrons inside jets. Search for pair-produced massive coloured scalars in four-jet final states with the ATLAS detector in proton–proton collisions at √s =7 TeV
2013
A search for pair-produced massive coloured scalar particles decaying to a four-jet final state is performed by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in proton–proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV. The analysed data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb[superscript −1]. No deviation from the Standard Model is observed in the invariant mass spectrum of the two-jet pairs. A limit on the scalar gluon pair production cross section of 70 pb (10 pb) is obtained at the 95 % confidence level for a scalar gluon mass of 150 GeV (350 GeV). Interpreting these results as mass limits on scalar gluons, masses ranging from 150 GeV to 287 GeV are excluded at the 95 % confidence level.
Measurement of W ± Z production in proton-proton collisions at √s =7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A study of W±Z production in proton-proton collisions at √s=7 TeV is presented using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb−1 collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2011. In total, 317 candidates, with a background expectation of 68±10 events, are observed in double-leptonic decay final states with electrons, muons and missing transverse momentum. The total cross-section is determined to be σtotWZ=19.0+1.4−1.3(stat.)±0.9(syst.)±0.4(lumi.) pb, consistent with the Standard Model expectation of 17.6+1.1−1.0 pb. Limits on anomalous triple gauge boson couplings are derived using the transverse momentum spectrum of Z bosons in the selected events. The …
Theoretical analysis of the γγ→π0η process

We present a theoretical study of the $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\eta}$ process from the threshold up to 1.4 GeV in the $\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\eta}$ invariant mass. For the s-wave ${a}_{0}(980)$ resonance state we adopt a dispersive formalism using a coupled-channel Omn\`es representation, while the d-wave ${a}_{2}(1320)$ state is described as a Breit-Wigner resonance. An analytic continuation to the ${a}_{0}(980)$ pole position allows us to extract its two-photon decay width as ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}_{{a}_{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}}=0.27(4)\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{keV}$.
Amplitude Analysis of theB±→φK*(892)±Decay

We perform an amplitude analysis of B-+/-->phi(1020)K-*(892)(+/-) decay with a sample of about 384x10(6) B (B) over bar pairs recorded with the BABAR detector. Overall, twelve parameters are measured, including the fractions of longitudinal f(L) and parity-odd transverse f(perpendicular to) amplitudes, branching fraction, strong phases, and six parameters sensitive to CP violation. We use the dependence on the K pi invariant mass of the interference between the J(P)=1(-) and 0(+) K pi components to resolve the discrete ambiguity in the determination of the strong and weak phases. Observation ofe+e−→γX(3872)at BESIII
2014
Using data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider at center-of-mass energies of root s = 4.23, 4.26, and 4.36 GeV, we observe e(+)e(-) -> pi(0)pi(0)h(c) for the first time. The Born cross sections are measured and found to be about half of those of e(+)e(-) -> pi(+)pi(-)h(c) within less than 2 sigma. In the pi(0)h(c) mass spectrum, a structure at 4.02 GeV/c(2) is found. It is most likely to be the neutral isospin partner of the Z(c)(4020)(+/-) observed in the process of e(+)e(-) -> pi(+)pi(-)h(c) being found. Anomalous enhancement of the isospin-violating Λ(1405) production by a triangle singularity in Λc→π+π0π0Σ0

The decay of ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{c}^{+}$ into ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}(1405)$ with the $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}(1405)$ decay into ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}}^{0}$ through a triangle diagram is studied. This process is initiated by ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{c}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\overline{K}}^{*}N$, and then the ${\overline{K}}^{*}$ decays into $\overline{K}\ensuremath{\pi}$ and $\overline{K}N$ produce the $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}(1405)$ through a triangle loop containing ${\overline{K}}^{*}N\overline{K}$ which develops a singularity around 1890 MeV. Big bounce and future time singularity resolution in Bianchi i cosmologies: The projective invariant Nieh-Yan case

We extend the notion of the Nieh-Yan invariant to generic metric-affine geometries, where both torsion and nonmetricity are taken into account. Notably, we show that the properties of projective invariance and topologicity can be independently accommodated by a suitable choice of the parameters featuring this new Nieh-Yan term. We then consider a special class of modified theories of gravity able to promote the Immirzi parameter to a dynamical scalar field coupled to the Nieh-Yan form, and we discuss in more detail the dynamics of the effective scalar tensor theory stemming from such a revised theoretical framework.
