Lymph node metastasis in lower lip squamous cell carcinoma in relation to tumour size, histologic variables and p27Kip1 protein expression.

2003

We studied a consecutive series of 95 patients undergoing radical surgical resection of lower lip squamous cell carcinoma (LLSCC) to assess the correlation between lymph node status and several prognostic variables, such as sex and age, tumour size, histologic grading, maximal microscopic tumour thickness, perineural infiltration and p27Kip1 protein status, to see which of these might be predictive of the development of lymph node metastases. Statistical analysis demonstrated a significant association between node status and tumour size, histological grading, maximal thickness, perineural invasion and p27Kip1 protein expression; additionally to node metastasis, low p27Kip1 protein expressio…

Rectal cancer: mucinous carcinoma on magnetic resonance imaging indicates poor response to neoadjuvant chemoradiation.

2010

Purpose To assess response of locally advanced rectal carcinoma to chemoradiation with regard to mucinous status and local tumor invasion found at pretherapeutic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods and Materials A total of 88 patients were included in this prospective study of patients with advanced mrT3 and mrT4 carcinomas. Carcinomas were categorized by MRI as mucinous (mucin proportion >50% within the tumor volume), and as nonmucinous. Patients received neoadjuvant chemoradiation consisting of 50.4 Gy (1.8 Gy/fraction) and 5-fluorouracil on Days 1 to 5 and Days 29 to 33. Therapy response was assessed by comparing pretherapeutic MRI with histopathology of surgical specimens (minimum…

Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus: diagnosis and prognosis.

1997

BACKGROUND. Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) is a recently recognized, poorly differentiated variant of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), which is located predominantly in the upper aerodigestive tract. METHODS. In this study, clinical and pathologic parameters of 17 BSCCs and 133 typical SCCs of the esophagus that underwent potentially curative resection (no distant metastases, no residual tumor) were compared. In addition, light microscopic, electron microscopic, and immunohistochemical features of BSCC were investigated, to determine whether this type of carcinoma could be differentiated from other poorly differentiated carcinomas of the esophagus. RESULTS. Light microscopic study sh…

Visceral infiltration of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma is most prognostic after curative resection - Retrospective cohort study of 102 consecutive …

2018

Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) is a rare malignancy, and therefore large unicenter series on the surgical outcome are rare in the literature, and prognostic factors for overall survival in the literature vary widely. All patients who underwent surgery for ICC were prospectively recorded. The type of resection, operative details, histological results, morbidity, mortality, overall and recurrence-free survivals as well as prognostic factors were assessed. Prognostic factors were examined by univariate and multivariate analyses. P-values0.05 were considered significant.Between January 2008 and December 2015, 102 patients underwent a resection with curative intent and were included in thi…

High density of tryptase-positive mast cells in human colorectal cancer: a poor prognostic factor related to protease-activated receptor 2 expression

2013

Tryptase(+) mast cells (MCs), abundant in the invasive front of tumours, contribute to tissue remodelling. Indeed, protease-activated receptor- 2 (PAR-2) activation by MC-tryptase is considered an oncogenic event in colorectal cancer (CRC). Recently, we have suggested NHERF1 as a potential new marker in CRC. In this study, we aimed to determine the distribution of tryptase(+) MCs and PAR-2 and to examine the relationship between PAR-2 and NHERF1, investigating their reputed usefulness as tumour markers. We studied a cohort of 115 CRC specimens including primary cancer (C) and adjacent normal mucosa (NM) by immunohistochemical double staining, analyzing the protein expression of MC-tryptase,…

Do spinal meningiomas penetrate the pial layer? Correlation between magnetic resonance imaging and microsurgical findings and intracranial tumor inte…

1997

OBJECTIVE: To study the relationships between spinal dura-arachnoid and tumor-cord interfaces in spinal meningiomas and to investigate whether a disruption of the pial layer and penetration of the tumor in the spinal cord occurs. METHODS: Fifteen patients with histologically proven meningiomas underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) preoperatively. All patients underwent microsurgery. The histological characteristics of the tumors were compared with MRI and microsurgical findings. RESULTS: At surgery, the peritumoral hypointense rim revealed by MRI in 10 of 15 patients corresponded to a well-defined cerebrospinal fluid-containing space confined between the outer arachnoidal layer and the…

[Conservative treatment of locally advanced bladder carcinoma: neoadjuvant chemotherapy, TUR and radiotherapy. Results in 40 patients]

1998

to assess the results of bladder preservation in infiltrating bladder cancer. The potential for neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by extensive TUR and radiotherapy was investigated in 40 patients with T2-T4a G2-G3 bladder carcinoma.from 1983 to 1995, 40 patients were submitted to bladder-sparing treatment consisting of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, extensive, TUR and radiotherapy. Most patients had T3G3 cancer. Cystectomy was not performed due to patient" choice in 29 cases (72.5%), for severe pulmonary or cardiovascular disease in disease in 9 patients (22.5) and age over 80 in 2 (5%) patients. A deep TUR-biopsy was performed before and after chemotherapy and an extensive TUR was repeated at t…

Factors affecting recurrence and progression in superficial bladder tumours

1995

Prognostic factors in superficial bladder tumours are highly correlated with each other. In this study, their relative importance is examined and grouping of patients in three different prognostic groups suggested. 576 patients (from EORTC protocols 30790 and 30782) were analysed. They have been followed from 3 months to 8.6 years with a median of 4 years. 76 patients developed an invasive tumour (or = T2); the shortest time to invasion was 12 weeks, the longest was 6.6 years. Time from invasion to death ranged from 3 weeks to 4.4 years with a median of 2 years. Prognostic factors contributing to recurrence, invasion and survival were investigated: age, sex, size of largest tumour, number o…

High IL-22RA1 gene expression is associated with poor outcome in muscle invasive bladder cancer

2020

Abstract Background The cell surface interleukin 22 (IL-22) receptor complex is mainly expressed in epithelial and tissue cells like pancreatitis cells. Recent studies described that IL-22R was overexpressed in malignant diseases and was associated with a poor overall survival (OS). The role of IL-22RA1 gene expression in muscle invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) has not been investigated, yet. Objectives The aim of this study was to analyze the role of IL-22RA1 gene expression in patients with MIBC. Methods In a cohort of 114 patients with MIBC who underwent radical cystectomy, IL-22RA1 gene expression was analyzed with qRT-PCR and correlated with clinical parameters. Furthermore, Kaplan-Meier…
