Iodine emissions from the sea ice of the Weddell Sea

2012

Iodine compounds were measured above, below and within the sea ice of the Weddell Sea during a cruise in 2009, to make progress in elucidating the mechanism of local enhancement and volatilisation of iodine. I2 mixing ratios of up to 12.4 pptv were measured 10 m above the sea ice, and up to 31 pptv was observed above surface snow on the nearby Brunt Ice Shelf – large amounts. Atmospheric IO of up to 7 pptv was measured from the ship, and the average sum of HOI and ICl was 1.9 pptv. These measurements confirm the Weddell Sea as an iodine hotspot. Average atmospheric concentrations of CH3I, C2H5I, CH&l…

Gel Electrophoresis Coupled to Inductively Coupled Plasma−Mass Spectrometry Using Species-Specific Isotope Dilution for Iodide and Iodate Determinati…

2007

In this paper, we present an online coupling of gel electrophoresis (GE) and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for the determination of iodine species (iodide and iodate) in liquid (seawater) and aerosol samples. For the first time, this approach is applied to the analysis of small molecules, and initial systematic investigations revealed that the migration behavior as well as the detection sensitivity strongly depends on the matrix (e.g., high concentrations of chloride). These effects could consequently affect the accuracy of analytical results, so that they need to be considered for the analysis of real samples. The technique used for quantification is species-specifi…

Emission of iodine-containing volatiles by selected microalgae species

2014

In this study we present the results of an emission study of different phytoplankton samples in aqueous media treated with elevated ozone levels. Halocarbon measurements show that the samples tested released bromoform and different iodocarbons, including iodomethane, iodochloromethane and diiodomethane. Iodide and iodate levels in the liquid phase were representative of concentrations of surface water in a natural environment. Measurement of volatile iodine (I2) emissions from two diatom samples (Mediopyxis helysia and Porosira glacialis) and the background sample (F/2 medium from filtered natural seawater) showed that the quantity of evolved I2 depends on the ozone concentration in the air…

Accurate determination of element species by on-line coupling of chromatographic systems with ICP-MS using isotope dilution technique

1998

Abstract The instrumental design for coupling different liquid chromatographic systems such as ion, reversed phase, and size exclusion chromatography as well as capillary gas chromatography, with ICP-MS for the determination of element species is described. For accurate analyses obtaining ‘real time’ concentrations of chromatographic peaks, the isotope dilution mass spectrometric (IDMS) technique is applied. Two different spiking modes are possible, one using species-specific and another one using species-unspecific spike solutions of isotope-enriched labelled compounds. The species-specific mode is only possible for element species well defined in their structure and composition, for examp…

A New Method for Measuring the Oxygen Content in Microliter Samples of Gases and Liquids: The Oxygen Cuvette

1978

Gas analytical processes for the determination of oxygen content or concentration are based partly on physical principles (e.g. mass spectrometry, gas chromatography, paramagnetic methods) and partly on chemical methods (e.g. gasometric, titrimetric, electrochemical or photometric methods).

Structural and vibrational study ofZn(IO3)2combining high-pressure experiments and density-functional theory

2021

We report a characterization of the high-pressure behavior of zinc iodate, $\mathrm{Zn}{(\mathrm{I}{\mathrm{O}}_{3})}_{2}$. By the combination of x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations we have found evidence of two subtle isosymmetric structural phase transitions. We present arguments relating these transitions to a nonlinear behavior of phonons and changes induced by pressure on the coordination sphere of the iodine atoms. This fact is explained as a consequence of the formation of metavalent bonding at high pressure which is favored by the lone-electron pairs of iodine. In addition, the pressure dependence of unit-cell parameters, volume, and bond distanc…

Pressure-Driven Symmetry-Preserving Phase Transitions in Co(IO3)2

2021

[EN] High-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction studies of cobalt iodate, Co(IO3)(2), reveal a counterintuitive pressure-induced expansion along certain crystallographic directions. High-pressure Raman and infrared spectroscopy, combined with density-functional theory calculations, reveal that with increasing pressure, it becomes energetically favorable for certain I-O bonds to increase in length over the full range of pressure studied up to 28 GPa. This phenomenon is driven by the high-pressure behavior of iodate ion lone electron pairs. Two pressure-induced isosymmetric monoclinic-monoclinic phase transitions are observed at around 3.0 and 9.0 GPa, which are characterized by increasing o…

Very narrow-bandwidth tunable infrared difference frequency generation with injection-locked dye lasers

1989

Two flashlamp pumped dye lasers of very high spectral quality are mixed in a LiIO3 crystal to generate a tunable infrared beam through the difference frequency mixing. Thanks to the injection-locking process of the pulsed dye lasers leading to a linewidth of 6 MHz with peak powers of about 10 kW, we obtain an IR beam tunable from 3.5 to 5.9 μm with a peak power of 40 W and a linewidth of 9 MHz. As an application we present a spectrum of N2O obtained by differential absorption near 1880 cm−1. The lines of thisQ-branch are Doppler limited at the working pressure (102 Pa).
