Abstract. Based on the results of a pilot study in 2007, which found high mixing ratios of molecular iodine (I2) above the intertidal macroalgae (seaweed) beds at Mweenish Bay (Ireland), we extended the study to nine different locations in the vicinity of Mace Head Atmospheric Research Station on the west coast of Ireland during a field campaign in 2009. The mean values of I2 mixing ratio found above the macroalgae beds at nine different locations ranged from 104 to 393 ppt, implying a high source strength of I2. Asymmetric [N–I–N]+halonium complexes in solution?

Assessment of the solution equilibria of [bis(pyridine)iodine(I)]+ complexes by ESI-MS and NMR reveals the preference of iodine(I) to form complexes with a more basic pyridine. Mixtures of symmetric [bis(pyridine)iodine(I)]+ complexes undergo statistical ligand exchange, with a predominant entropic driving force favoring asymmetric systems. The influence of ligand basicity, concentration, temperature, and ligand composition is evaluated. Our findings are expected to facilitate the investigations, and the supramolecular and synthetic applications of halonium ions’ halogen bonds. peerReviewed

Tetraiodo-ortho-carborane based X-ray contrast agents can be readily prepared in a high yield, fast, clean, regioselective fashion by a solvent-free reaction of ortho-carboranes with iodine in sealed tubes.

[EN] The incorporation of iodine atoms onto the boron vertices of the o-carborane framework causes, according to spectroscopic data, a uniform increase in the acidic character of the C-c-H (C-c= cluster carbon) vertices, whereas the incorporation of methyl groups onto the boron vertices of the o-carborane framework reduces their acidity. Methyl groups when attached to boron are electron-withdrawing in boron clusters, whereas iodine atoms bonded to boron act as electron donors. Summary Self-assembly of pre-organized subunits with a concave overall shape is an effective strategy for the synthesis of supramolecular capsules. We report the synthesis of a cavitand-based hexameric capsule held together solely by 12 robust [N⋅⋅⋅I + ⋅⋅⋅N] halogen bonds and its characterization in solution and in the gas phase via 1 H NMR spectroscopy, diffusion-ordered nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (DOSY), and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The [N⋅⋅⋅I + ⋅⋅⋅N] halogen-bonded hexameric capsule was efficiently synthesized from the isolobal metallosupramolecular Ag + capsule by application of the [N⋅⋅⋅Ag + ⋅⋅⋅N] → [N⋅⋅⋅I + ⋅⋅⋅N] cation-exchange reaction.

Abstract In the absence of a mandatory salt iodisation programme, two nationwide cross-sectional cluster surveys revealed persisting iodine deficiency among Latvian schoolchildren during the spring season and a noteworthy iodine deficiency in pregnant women in Latvia; these deficiencies warrant intervention. The consequences of mild-to-moderate iodine deficiency during pregnancy and lactation can adversely affect foetal brain development. Data from a Latvian population survey revealed the consumption of approximately 100 μg of iodine per day through foods and iodised salt. Abstract Milk and dairy products are studied as alternative iodine sources, because salt iodisation is controversial due to high salt consumption leading to cardiovascular diseases. However, the iodine concentration in milk markedly varies. This study evaluated the iodine concentration in cow’s milk available in the Latvian market. Iodine and fat concentration was analysed with a spectrophotometer “Varian Cary 50” based ISO 2446:2008 in 20 milk samples. Data from the Central Statistical Bureau and survey among pregnant women were used to analyse milk product consumption and its impact on iodine status. Nuclear energy has significantly promoted the development of human society. However, nuclear pollution caused by nuclear accidents can lead to significant hazards to the environment and human health. As a major radioactive product, radioactive iodine (mainly existing as I−) detection has attracted significant attentions. In this study, zirconium(IV) is used to enhance the oxidation of environmental I− to form I2.
