Status of vulnerable Cystoseira populations along the Italian infralittoral fringe, and relationships with environmental and anthropogenic variables

2018

We analyzed the occurrence and status of infralittoral fringe populations of Cystoseira spp. (Fucales) at thirteen rocky sites around the Italian coastline, and explored the relationships with relevant environmental and anthropogenic variables. We found Cystoseira populations at 11 sites: most were scattered and comprised monospecific stands of C. compressa, and only 6 sites also supported sparse specimens of either C. amentacea var. stricta or C. brachycarpa. Coastal human population density, Chlorophyll a seawater concentrations, sea surface temperature, annual range of sea surface temperature and wave fetch explained most of the variation of the status of C. compressa. We hypothesize a g…

Effects of climate and land-use change on species abundance in a Central European bird community.

2007

Although it is known that changes in land use and climate have an impact on ecological communities, it is unclear which of these factors is currently most important. We sought to determine the influence of land-use and climate alteration on changes in the abundance of Central European birds. We examined the impact of these factors by contrasting abundance changes of birds of different breeding habitat, latitudinal distribution, and migratory behavior. We examined data from the semiquantitative Breeding Bird Atlas of Lake Constance, which borders Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. Changes in the regional abundance of the 159 coexisting bird species from 1980-1981 to 2000-2002 were influenced…

Pulsed-Resource Dynamics Constrain the Evolution of Predator-Prey Interactions

2011

Although temporal variability in the physical environment plays a major role in population fluctuations, little is known about how it drives the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of species interactions. We studied experimentally how extrinsic resource pulses affect evolutionary and ecological dynamics between the prey bacterium Serratia marcescens and the predatory protozoan Tetrahymena thermophila. Predation increased the frequency of defensive, nonpigmented prey types, which bore competitive costs in terms of reduced maximum growth rate, most in a constant-resource environment. Furthermore, the predator densities of the pulsed-resource environment regularly fluctuated above and below …

Multiferroic BiFeO<inf>3</inf> for conductance control at the LaAlO<inf>3</inf>/SrTiO<inf>3</inf>-interface

2015

Multiferroic materials possessing both magnetic and ferroelectric order enable in principle to switch order parameters using not the direct reciprocal field, e.g. to switch the magnetization by an electric field or the electric polarization by a magnetic field. A recent breakthrough was achieved by the demonstration of the ferromagnetic switching of a Co layer with an electric field employing the multiferroic BiFeO 3 [1]. The latter material is a perovskite based oxide that shows stable ferro-electricity as well as an antiferromagnetic order at room temperature [2,3]. Due to a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction induced by rotation of oxygen octahedra leading to noncollinear Fe-O-Fe bonds a s…

Trapped ion density distribution in the presence of He-buffer gas

1981

The spatial density distribution of Ba+ ions, confined in a rf quadrupole trap, has been measured by laser scanning across the trap. This allows to determine the ion temperature, assuming thermal equilibrium. Under UHV conditions the average ion energy has been found to be one tenth of the trap potential well depth. Collisions with He at pressures up to 5×10−6 mbar reduce the ion temperature by a factor of 3.

Quantum paraelectric and induced ferroelectric states in

1996

Nominally pure has been studied by dielectric spectroscopy using small (linear regime) as well as large electrical fields (non-linear regime) up to . In addition measurements of the specific heat and its field-dependent contribution have been carried out. The field dependence of the dielectric constant and the specific heat can be well described by the transverse Ising Hamiltonian including tunnelling and external field terms. It gives evidence for the existence of polar clusters at low temperatures which are supposed to be associated with the quantum paraelectric state below in accord with recent free-energy calculations. The low-field third-harmonic susceptibility which measures the polar…

Effects of water dielectric saturation on the space–charge junction of a fixed-charge bipolar membrane

2000

Abstract The dielectric saturation at the space–charge junction of a fixed-charge bipolar membrane is studied using the theoretical approach by Booth for the water dielectric constant and the Poisson equation for the electrical double layer at the junction. The numerical solution gives the electric field and dielectric constant profiles through the junction as well as the junction thickness as a function of the voltage drop. The water dielectric constant decreases substantially for the large electric fields that may occur at the narrow bipolar junction.

Influence of 150 Years of Land Use on Anthropogenic and Natural Carbon Stocks in Emilia-Romagna Region (Italy)

2011

Changes in land use/cover that are commonly associated with urbanization can dramatically influence the amount, chemical form, and spatial distribution of carbon (C) stocks. Measured values and relative literature for composition of natural and anthropogenic materials have been compiled. These data are used in conjunction with land cover statistics and expert assessment of building design to calculate C stocks associated with 150 years of land use change and development for an area of the Po River Valley, Northern Italy. Using 4 time periods (1853, 1954, 1976, and 2003), we demonstrate that the C stocks within this densely populated area have undergone considerable modification. A 52% incre…

Thresholds for impaired species recovery

2015

Studies on small and declining populations dominate research in conservation biology. This emphasis reflects two overarching frameworks: the small-population paradigm focuses on correlates of increased extinction probability; the declining-population paradigm directs attention to the causes and consequences of depletion. Neither, however, particularly informs research on the determinants, rate or uncertainty of population increase. By contrast, Allee effects (positive associations between population size and realized per capita population growth rate, r realized , a metric of average individual fitness) offer a theoretical and empirical basis for identifying numerical and temporal threshol…

Utility of island populations in re-introduction programmes--relationships between Arabian gazelles (Gazella arabica) from the Farasan Archipelago an…

2014

Understanding local adaptation and population differentiation is vital to the success of re-introduction initiatives. As other mammals living on islands, Arabian gazelles (G. arabica) show reduced body size on the Farasan archipelago, which we corroborated in this study through morphometric analyses of skulls. In the light of the steep population decline on the Arabian Peninsula – but stable population development on the archipelago – we tested the potential suitability of Farasan gazelles as a source for re-introductions on the mainland. We therefore investigated genetic differentiation between Farasan and mainland populations using eleven nuclear microsatellite loci and detected a distinc…
