High precision hyperfine measurements in Bismuth challenge bound-state strong-field QED
2017
Electrons bound in highly charged heavy ions such as hydrogen-like bismuth 209Bi82+ experience electromagnetic fields that are a million times stronger than in light atoms. Measuring the wavelength of light emitted and absorbed by these ions is therefore a sensitive testing ground for quantum electrodynamical (QED) effects and especially the electron–nucleus interaction under such extreme conditions. However, insufficient knowledge of the nuclear structure has prevented a rigorous test of strong-field QED. Here we present a measurement of the so-called specific difference between the hyperfine splittings in hydrogen-like and lithium-like bismuth 209Bi82+,80+ with a precision that is improve…
An efficient diagnostic technique for distribution systems based on under fault voltages and currents
2010
Service continuity is one of the major aspects in the definition of the quality of the electrical energy, for this reason the research in the field of faults diagnostic for distribution systems is spreading ever more. Moreover the increasing interest around modern distribution systems automation for management purposes gives faults diagnostics more tools to detect outages precisely and in short times. In this paper, the applicability of an efficient fault location and characterization methodology within a centralized monitoring system is discussed. The methodology, appropriate for any kind of fault, is based on the use of the analytical model of the network lines and uses the fundamental co…
Temperature dependence of oxidation behavior and coercivity evolution in fine-grained spinel ferrites
2000
Abstract The present paper reviews for a series of fine-grained MxCoyFe(3−x−y)O4 spinel ferrites (M=Mn, Mo, Cu, V) which oxidize into mixed-valence defect ferrites, a systematic study of the correlation between the oxidation temperature and the variation of coercivity. An increase of the coercivity is observed as often as the oxidation reactions Fe2+→Fe3+ and Mn+→M(n+m)+ (1⩽m⩽3) occur. This enhancement of coercivity has been explained by stresses generated during each specific oxidation reaction. The well-known property of cobalt to strongly magnify the magnetostrictive effects has been used to support this interpretation.
Crystal Chemistry of CdIn2S4, MgIn2S4, and MnIn2S4 Thiospinels under High Pressure
2012
We report X-ray diffraction measurements in CdIn2S4, MgIn2S4, and MnIn2S4 thiospinels at room temperature and high pressures. The pressure dependences of the structural parameters have been determined and compared to those from theoretical calculations. It is found that the three thiospinels have similar bulk moduli (B-0) between 75 and 80 GPa (B-0' similar to 3). The degree of inversion of these thiospinels has also been determined. The three thiospinels undergo a phase transition toward a defect LiTiO2-type structure above 9.5, 8.3, and 6.8 GPa in CdIn2S4, MgIn2S4, and MnIn2S4, respectively. Interestingly, the low- and high-pressure phases belong to the same symmetry group (Fd-3m), the tr…
Heterogeneous contributions of change in population distribution of body mass index to change in obesity and underweight
2021
From 1985 to 2016, the prevalence of underweight decreased, and that of obesity and severe obesity increased, in most regions, with significant variation in the magnitude of these changes across regions. We investigated how much change in mean body mass index (BMI) explains changes in the prevalence of underweight, obesity, and severe obesity in different regions using data from 2896 population-based studies with 187 million participants. Changes in the prevalence of underweight and total obesity, and to a lesser extent severe obesity, are largely driven by shifts in the distribution of BMI, with smaller contributions from changes in the shape of the distribution. In East and Southeast Asia…
Ethylene homo- and copolymerization catalyzed by vanadium, zirconium, and titanium complexes having potentially tridentate Schiff base ligands
2021
Abstract New potentially tridentate Schiff base ligands, 2-[({4-[(3-N,N-dimethylamino)propyl] phenyl}imino)methyl]-4,6-di-tert-butylphenol (L1H) and 2-[{2-(N-phenyl-N-methylaminomethyl)-phenylimino}-methyl]-4,6-di-tert-butylophenol (L2H) were prepared and after deprotonation they were reacted with VOCl3 or MCl4 (where M = Zr or Ti) to produce corresponding complexes (L1-V, L2-V, L1-Zr, L2-Ti) with good yields. All new compounds were characterized by the 1H and 13C NMR as well as FTIR spectroscopic methods. Upon activation with Et2AlCl or EtAlCl2, both the vanadium complexes exhibited exceptionally high catalytic activities in the ethylene polymerization (up to 69,000 kg/(molV⋅h) for L1-V an…
Current distribution along electrodialysis stacks and its influence on the current-voltage curve: behaviour from near-zero current to limiting plateau
2023
The current maldistribution along the flow path of electrodialysis (ED) units is a well-known phenomenon. However, it has been poorly quantified via experimental tests so far. This work aimed at measuring the current distribution in an ED stack with 40 cm path length, provided with four-segment electrodes. The current-voltage curve (CVC) of each segment was recorded under several operating conditions of inlet concentrations and feed velocity. In the CVC of the first segment, the current increased approaching a saturation, while in that of the remaining segments it passed through a maximum and then settled at near-zero values when high voltage values were applied. The current fraction on the…
Compared regimes of NDVI and Rainfall in semi-arid regions of Africa
2006
International audience; Bi-monthly normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) at an 8km spatial resolution from the advanced very high resolution radiometers (AVHRR) was used from 1981 to 1995 to analyse the vegetation response to rainfall supply in semi-arid regions of Africa. Within the 200-600 mm annual rainfall belt, for which the apparent NDVI response to rainfall was the strongest, three regions were selected which exhibited different patterns in their NDVI regimes and/or relationships with rainfall. The regions, located in western, southern and eastern Africa, were split into coherent sub-regions in terms of mean regime of photosynthetic activity through a cluster analysis. Overal…
