Selective detection of 13C by laser photodetachment mass spectrometry

2008

Abstract In this paper, we demonstrate how laser photodetachment mass spectrometry (LPMS) can be used to selectively detect 13C− ions in the presence of 12C− ions in a low energy ion beam. An isotopically enriched beam of carbon ions consisting of equal amounts of 13C− and 12C− ions was extracted from an ion source. The ions interacted with a laser beam in a collinear geometry over a distance of 70 cm. Residual atoms produced in the photodetachment process were detected in a neutral particle detector placed downstream of the collinear interaction region. By making use of the Doppler effect we were able to selectively photodetach 13C− ions. The number of detected 13C atoms was 13 times large…

Optimising the Collinear Resonance Ionisation Spectroscopy (CRIS) experiment at CERN-ISOLDE

2020

© 2019 The CRIS experiment at CERN-ISOLDE is a dedicated laser spectroscopy setup for high-resolution hyperfine structure measurements of nuclear observables of exotic isotopes. Between 2015 and 2018 developments have been made to improve the background suppression, laser-atom overlap and automation of the beamline. Furthermore, a new ion source setup has been developed for offline studies. Here we present the latest technical developments and future perspectives for the experiment. ispartof: Nuclear Instruments & Methods In Physics Research Section B-Beam Interactions With Materials And Atoms vol:463 pages:384-389 ispartof: location:SWITZERLAND, CERN, Geneva status: published

Ion source and low energy beam transport prototyping for a single-ended heavy ion ToF-ERDA facility

2023

We present the status of the ion source and low energy beam transport prototyping activities for a heavy ion time-of-flight elastic recoil detection analysis (ToF-ERDA) equipment, designed to accelerate a flux of 1–10 particle nano-Ampere of 40Ar6-12+ ions to 3–6 MeV energy for depth profiling of light elements. The prototype injector consists of a novel permanent magnet electron cyclotron resonance ion source CUBE-ECRIS with a minimum-B quadrupole field topology, and a 90° permanent magnet dipole with adjustable field strength for charge state selection. We report experimentally measured argon beam currents as a function of the applied microwave power and ion source potential to demonstrat…

The laser and optical system for the RIBF-PALIS experiment

2017

Abstract This paper describes the laser and optical system for the Parasitic radioactive isotope (RI) beam production by Laser Ion-Source (PALIS) in the RIKEN fragment separator facility. This system requires an optical path length of 70 m for transporting the laser beam from the laser light source to the place for resonance ionization. To accomplish this, we designed and implemented a simple optical system consisting of several mirrors equipped with compact stepping motor actuators, lenses, beam spot screens and network cameras. The system enables multi-step laser resonance ionization in the gas cell and gas jet via overlap with a diameter of a few millimeters, between the laser photons an…

A compact linear Paul trap cooler buncher for CRIS

2020

A gas-filled linear Paul trap for the Collinear Resonance Ionisation Spectroscopy (CRIS) experiment at ISOLDE, CERN is currently under development. The trap is designed to accept beam from both ISOLDE target stations and the CRIS stable ion source. The motivation for the project along with the current design, simulations and future plans, will be outlined. peerReviewed

Developments for neutron-induced fission at IGISOL-4

2016

At the IGISOL-4 facility, neutron-rich, medium mass nuclei have usually been produced via charged particle-induced fission of natural uranium and thorium. Neutron-induced fission is expected to have a higher production cross section of the most neutron-rich species. Development of a neutron source along with a new ion guide continues to be one of the major goals since the commissioning of IGISOL-4. Neutron intensities at di↵erent angles from a beryllium neutron source have been measured in an on-line experiment with a 30 MeV proton beam. Recently, the new ion guide coupled to the neutron source has been tested as well. Details of the neutron source and ion guide design together with prelimi…

Ion beam development for the needs of the JYFL nuclear physics programme

2008

The increased requirements towards the use of higher ion beam intensities motivated us to initiate the project to improve the overall transmission of the K130 cyclotron facility. With the facility the transport efficiency decreases rapidly as a function of total beam intensity extracted from the JYFL ECR ion sources. According to statistics, the total transmission efficiency is of the order of 10% for low beam intensities (I(total)or =0.7 mA) and only about 2% for high beam intensities (I(total)1.5 mA). Requirements towards the use of new metal ion beams for the nuclear physics experiments have also increased. The miniature oven used for the production of metal ion beams at the JYFL is not …

CERN’s Linac4 cesiated surface H− source

2017

Linac4 cesiated surface H− sources are routinely operated for the commissioning of the CERN’s Linac4 and on an ion source test stand. Stable current of 40-50 mA are achieved but the transmission through the LEBT of 80% was below expectations and triggered additional beam simulation and characterization. The H− beam profile is not Gaussian and emittance measurements are larger than simulation. The status of ongoing development work is described; 36 mA H− and 20 mA D− beams were produced with a 5.5 mm aperture cesiated surface ion source. The emittances measured at the test stand are presented. During a preliminary test, the Linac4 proton source delivered a total beam intensity of 70 mA (p, H…

Beta decay energies and nuclear masses of148Ba,148La and151Pr

1990

Theβ-decay energy of the neutron-rich isotopes148Ba,148La and151Pr has been measured at the Institute Laue-Langevin (ILL). The148Ba- and148La-nuclei were produced using a high-temperature ion source at the OSTIS separator of this institute, whereas samples of151Pr were obtained from the thermal fission of239Pu, used as a target in the mass separator LOHENGRIN. At both instruments,βγ-coincidences were measured with a plastic scintillator telescope and a Ge(I)-detector, together withβ-singles andγ-singles spectra. Theβ-spectra emitted in coincidence with 44γ-lines in the decay of these nuclei have been evaluated. From their endpoint energies, the followingQβ-values have been obtained:Qβ(148Ba…

Recent Advances in On-Line Laser Spectroscopy

2015

At radioactive ion beam facilities, particle accelerators are employed to induce nuclear reactions in order to provide short-lived nuclei for immediate study using a variety of spectroscopic techniques. These exotic isotopes/isomers are formed into a beam of fast ions, which are mass analyzed in-flight during transport to a chosen experimental set-up. As an additional filter, the atomic level structure provides a selective fingerprint, which distinguishes one element from another due to the varying numbers of protons and electrons. This property is exploited in laser ion sources whereby high power, pulsed tuneable laser radiation is used to excite and ionize the atom in order to enhance the…
